I can guarantee that you don't own a gun and there's a high probability you've never fired anything except a paintball gun, BB gun and maybe a shotgun.

I can 100% guarantee you that I own both an over under shotgun and a 22 hornet rifle.

Again in the event of a breakdown of law and order don't come to Westmeath for food , water or shelter. It's mine

Lol. No it won’t be mad max. But just as you see some posters here ignoring science and choosing to believe in conspiracies etc etc you’ll have people in the real world act like idiots and breach cordons etc etc. They will make things worse than they have to be, as idiots always have since time immemorial.

It will hurt, people will die and some will make things worse instead of better with their idiocy but worst case scenario 98 to 99% of us will get a bit of a flu during the year and then be fine.

If we are reasonable and don’t scaremonger it’ll be fine for roughly 99% of people. Sucks to be in the 1% though of course.

Sorry wasn’t trying to make it sound like Mad Max.

99% of people should be just fine this day next year. It is important to retain that sense of perspective. This is not the end of civilisation ;-)

Yes I still hear people saying ''it is just a cold'' - these are the types of people that won't follow advice and guidelines and put people at risk...

Why has it spread so fast in Italy? Is it because they are not as strict as China and Japan?

Do you think Ireland is prepared for this ?

You're wrong most of the time. Now we have to meet in the middle. Like the channel tunnel, but with no handshaking.

You know what's weird though? I used to get colds, flu and other bugs all the time. Few nasty cases of norovirus too. Since I developed OCD and started using my sleeve to touch things, washing my hands very often and/or using hand gel and trying to avoid eating with my hands, I almost never get sick. Entire office came down with a horrible bug just before Christmas and I was grand.

    Food for thought, really.

Maybe the virus is a test for a cure to the environmental crisis; human depopulation.

More likely that large numbers of the eco overly-concerned will soon find themselves unemployed and on low-CO2 lifestyles and with changed perspectives.

I am really getting fed-up with the misuse of that word panic. Panic is mindless fight or flight response with sudden action and muddled thinking.

There is too much labeling of 'concern' as panic. It might make for a better headline but it's not helpful or warranted.

So far I have been learning as much as I can and watching what other countries are doing to control this. The smart ones we should be emulating.

I dunno, after the HSE gathered as many possibly infectious people In one room and sent them on their merry way.

    NOW I'm starting to panic.

Why couldn't the meeting have been held virtually?
These are the people responsible for managing/containing an outbreak? Oh oh.

Have you seen the Italian concept of 'personal space'? I've been less intimate with people I've had sex with compared to spending 10 minutes on the Rome metro. Everyone on top of each other, even when there's no reason to be. Greeting everyone you meet by kissing them on the face doesn't help much either, I wouldn't have thought.

I don't know anything about gaa or who that Des fella is but he seemed to just deflect everything by talking about sport in the UK and further afield. Sure we have no control over that.. what are we doing about or what plans are in place for sporting events and mass gatherings here ffs! Also he's not great at public speaking and his tan was distracting!

Won't we see an increase in global temperatures because of this?

    Non scientific comment :

Sadly and ironically the pollution we emit has traditionally blocked out some of the sun's rays which kept the planet cooler.

If we stop emissions or drop them by a reasonable amount then the planet heats up.

I know I read this somewhere. Can anyone explain that better than me please!

    Christ.

Less carbon in the atmosphere = more heat lost to space instead of being reflected back to ground.

This took less than one second to find on google: https://www.nrdc.org/stories/global-warming-101

Not sure why anyone would doubt you on this. It is reasonably straight forward to get a gunin Ireland if you have a good reason to own one.
Pest control being the most common reason in rural Ireland.

Sent them away not to isolate but to carry on as normal. Just 'limit contact'

China went into lockdown, we are telling people to mingle

Our government and health care services won't be able to do a thing if we end up as bad as Italy, they are handling it pretty useless at the moment, let's hope it doesn't get to serious here

Meant to go to Rome Saturday for 3 days.. Really unsure what to do.. there doesn’t seem to be many cases there at the minute so I’m leaning towards going.. but I think if offered a refund on flights I’d take it so I’m just thinking am I being stupid to go over the sake of 400 euro..

Australia looking at detainment to prevent the spread of the virus.

The country's attorney general said Australians will have to get use to measures they have no experience of before.

Presumably this implies measures normally alien to a functioning democracy.

'we need to see widespread behavioural change' , he's saying a lot, but not being explicit enough, a lot of people will listen and say 'shure, we're grand so...'

    That requires the relevant experts.

Based on what you juat wrote there, there is no way someone like you should be allowed a firearms license.

Spare a thought of those of us with diagnosed OCD. Part of the therapy I recently had was touching things like ATMs, poles on the bus and lift buttons to prove that they were fine and I wouldn't get sick.

Now I'm being told that everything I was doing is what everyone should now be doing to protect against coronavirus, which just legitimises the OCD. Or maybe I was right all along?

I really do - wish you the best (and all other sufferers - have friends and relatives who suffer with it too / I could be a bit borderline myself / hance my overall fear - anyway wish you well. B

Join a gun club. Get writen permission from 2 farmers saying you can hunt on their land, don't have a criminal record. That's about it for a shotgun.

Nowadays I think you have to get a character reference or two also.

I thought his overall point was good and he got it across reasonably well. Some people will underestimate the threat and not take appropriate precautions. Others will acknowledge the threat but then see it as bigger than it is. The government, hse, doh etc. need to provide cohesive, honest, comprehensive information that's easily accessible to everyone! I don't think they're doing a great job of that and that's why some of us are calling this a cold/flu and others aren't trusting the various bodies to give us the complete picture.

Talking about the brain not recognising the difference between 0.1 and 5% and then going on about water shortages...like what?
What was the point of him being there? Tell me seriously
