    You're reading that entirely backwards.

People will panic about coronavirus because they're idiots. If you knew that by coming forward, your name would become public knowledge the next day, would you come forward?

Like fvck you would. You'd have all sorts of texts on your phone, funny looks from people for months. Your family getting hassle about it. Really. Of all things, matters of public health see people lose their bloody minds.

This is standard international practice; balancing the needs of public health against patient confidentiality. Every country's needs are different. We are a small country, which makes the disclosure of information different than in, for example, Wuhan.

What actual benefit would be served by naming the school publically? Zero. Therefore no need to name it.

Nobody should name names. Absolutely not.

My point was and is, keeping the name of a school a secret isn't in the public interest. The name of the school will (and did) out in the end.

If the HSE won't test everyone immediately then we should take matters into our own hands.

I'm sure i read somewhere that a good test is to bound the suspect and toss them into water. If they float they have it and should be burnt. If however they drown they are not infected.

Every port and airport should have an Olympic sized swimming pool and a pyre (above 27 degrees)

So how many confirmed cases in Ireland now ? The state of play in Italy is mind blowing.

According to National Geographic it is not certain if the heat will stop the virus. Its too early to say. Its likely but not certain.

No we're not. I already explained why the numbers seem high in the first week or 2. It's down to mainly lack of testing and a lag on initial data.

You can't extrapolate this growth over a longer period of time.

You said as many as 1 million cases in 14 days.

How do you possibly go from 1704 to 1 million in 2 weeks.

At that rate it would need nearly double every day for 14 days straight.

The average virus carrier would have to infect 2 or more people.
How contagious is the Wuhan Coronavirus? (Ro)
The attack rate or transmissibility (how rapidly the disease spreads) of a virus is indicated by its reproductive number (Ro, pronounced R-nought or r-zero), which represents the average number of people to which a single infected person will transmit the virus.

WHO's estimated (on Jan. 23) Ro to be between 1.4 and 2.5. [13]

Other studies have estimated a Ro between 3.6 and 4.0, and between 2.24 to 3.58. [23].

Preliminary studies had estimated Ro to be between 1.5 and 3.5. [5][6][7]

One south, one north. Two on the whole island in total.

Again maybe leave them for people who need them rather then profiteering from the situation. Which if you are serious, is pretty scummy behavior.

    That didnt take long!

If I get them, and can help distribute to my local community of which there is about 700 and be certain of covering the costs then whats the problem.

More of a scummy assumption than the idea itself - but very expected!

Oh please give up the chirade. You have no idea wtf you are talking about.

An R0 of 2 would mean a virus carrier gives it to 2 other people over the "entire duration" of their infection. Not per day.

Is anyone keeping their kids home from school just in case? Or do you plan on continuing as normal until the schools close? (If that happens)

Not a hope. Until I hear something concrete from my child's school about a confirmed case of corona virus in the building, he's going.

My workplace aren't going to allow me take time off work for no good reason!

I also don't want to panic my child over nothing.

After a few years of lurking decided to finally join you guys.

I don't know what's going on but I find it slightly weird that a school nearby went dead silent after around 10 am today. I heard a long announcement at that time outside but couldn't make out what they said. After that I haven't heard the school bell ring for recess. In fact it's been dead silent there since then and usually you can really hear the kids. I haven't gone there and check but sounds to me like they closed the school in the morning and all the kids went home. Nothing on the school website though and nothing on the news. Maybe they just decided to take a day off...?

The problem is that there is a global shortage of such supplies and by hoarding them you are depriving people who need them more than you.

We really need a seperate thread for news and updates. I can well understand the need for general chat but it needs its own thread. Some posters have been excellent information gatherers.

Will this not depend on population size and distribution/intensity? China and Italy have very different scenarios in that respect.

Disabling the bell was a good idea, we don't want to spook this thing...

Look man, you clearly don't understand doubling or exponential growth.

If you'd been more pleasant I'd try to help you understand, but you've been aggressive and weird.

Yeah sorry. "Recess" was probably the wrong word for it. What do you call the break between classes here then? English is not my mother tongue.

The HSE did not name the school. That is a different thing. The HSE is trying to signal the message that it will maintain absolute confidentiality for anyone contacting them. Like that neighbour down the road from you who is just back form northern Italy and is feeling a little under the weather. He might think he will bear with it rather than ending up in the public domain if he reports it.

I think you need to look up the definition of hoarding.

Anyway, the company im dealing with is at capacity and cannot deliver until june at the earliest, im pretty sure any healthcare agency in europe who deals with them have their orders in before me and also I will not be priority!

Its in my interest to protect my own community also, would you not like to be able to go to your local little shop and buy an N95 mask during this outbreak?

Everywhere should be doing it - Fact is I didnt want to even mention it hear as I knew the "brigade" would be out in force accusing of all sorts.
