    Q. Are any smokers out there thinking of quitting fairly sharpish, given the nature of this WuFlu
    Q. Are any athiests thinking of taking up eternal salvation from a skygod, during this time of Tribulation.

I'm an asthmatic smoker. I'm always thinking of quitting. This has somewhat made me think more. But thinking about it and doing it are two very different things.

I'm also an atheist. I will not be taking up talking to somebody else's imaginary friend. I'm comfortable with my own mortality. If covid-19 doesn't get me, something else will eventually. It happens to all of us.

They saw exponential growth in China. We're now seeing exponential growth in Italy. It doesn't require peer review, you can just look at the numbers yourself.

We have accurate numbers from Italy for known cases. That's what I'm using.

    Deal with it

No thanks I won't deal with mindless fear mongering speculation being presented as fact. I'll call it out for what it is every time. Bull****.

There are currently almost 226,000 people living with diabetes in Ireland.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/health-family/type-2-diabetes-alarming-rise-in-number-at-risk-1.3481431?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Flife-and-style%2Fhealth-family%2Ftype-2-diabetes-alarming-rise-in-number-at-risk-1.3481431

Over half of all adults in Ireland over 45 years of age have high blood pressure.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/irish-blood-pressure-problem-revealed-in-international-study-1.4013974?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fnews%2Fhealth%2Firish-blood-pressure-problem-revealed-in-international-study-1.4013974

Ireland has one of the higest rates of high blood pressure internationally and among the lowest levels of diagnosis, treatment and control of the condition.

My last 3 posts show we have a bigger % (like the Americans) in the high risk categories. We should be taking this more seriously.

Added to help to illustrate the serious problem

The mortality figures from China for those infected with covid-19 who have other conditions…

13.2% for those with cardiovascular disease

    9.2% for diabetes

    8.4% for hypertension

    8.0% for chronic respiratory disease

    7.6% for cancer

A scientific paper doesn't mean jack ****. It is it peer reviewed? Do most scientists come to the same conclusions? That's how science works.

It's not 1 guy writing a paper and bam that's fact.

We don't even have all the facts about this virus yet to get accurate figures for R0 and death rates so your calculations don't mean crap.

Do you believe there is no risk that this thing could spiral out of control?

You surely don't agree that we are doing all that we can to stem the spread of this nasty disease?

That did not pan out in China. Hubei infections peaked at about 1,000 per day and outside of Hubei it never really took off. The next three days of numbers from Italy, France, Germany and Spain will be very interesting and should tell us if China's containment measures are more effective than what is happening in Europe, as many are speculating.

I talked to many Chinese people over the last few weeks. One that came back from an area that had no cases. he said that he wasn't allowed out of his building for 10 days until he flew back to Ireland. He was checked 4 times from the time he left his house to the time he sat on his aircraft seat. In most areas in China all the people I talked to said their normal life has stopped , they have been sitting at home for the last month only going out once a week for supplies. China will be rid of the virus sooner than Europe. They have the ability to stop society operating quickly and then to scale up any response to deal with it.

Speaking as someone who has stocked up on hand sanitizer (as we use it in the office ALL the time) I not know that Americans are taking this even more seriously.

One of the stores I purchase my hand sanitizer from (usually purchase in bulk 100 bottles at a time) has put restrictions in place. Now you can only buy one multipack of 5 per scent. Before this it was as many as you required.

There is no panic here, it is jokingly mentioned in many cases, but better safe than sorry. We always carry masks in the office (due to people travelling internationally) and we always have sanitizers for all....

I usually bring some to Ireland when I am coming home and the Ladies LOVE the brand I bring home...so hence it makes great little pressies. Got an email last night from one of my nieces, saying thank you for forward planning (as if I was that smart) that sanitizers are sold out everywhere???

Looking at the response from afar, one of the weird things is that information is being kept quiet by the HSE (just going on reports). This is a silly approach, vagueness causes all sorts of problems. Why not just be up front about it all? So a child (Student) caught this on a trip to Italy. Describing him as someone from the East of Ireland it bloody stupid. Why not just tell it as it is? You do not have to name the person, a general location is sufficient. Ireland is a small country, this information is going to get out in minutes anyway. When my Dad passed away, the news was out there within 1 minute.....

The HSE needs to grow a pair if they are to be taken seriously.

What I find strange is that all the other students from the school are not been self isolated from their family members.

Why? They’re not sick, and not likely to get sick.

If 500 other kids need to self isolate, then you might as well tell the entire city to self isolate. Friends and colleagues of all family members. Schools, clubs attended by siblings. Public transport users. Neighbours. Friends of neighbours. Schools attended by neighbours kids. Like I said, homeopathic levels of dilution. Most of those kids won’t have been within an asses roar of the boy who has the virus, so there is no threat. At some stage, we’ll have to trust that the public health specialists on the ground are the people who are in the best position to make these kinds of decisions. Otherwise we should all just stay at home (alone and in seperate rooms)

Thsi thread is going around in circles. Again, these are not mortality rates. They are percentages of fatalities with the relevant underlying conditions. There's a world of difference.

Just like the Chinese cases there was a lag on data initially until wider spread testing was done which artificially inflates the numbers early on.

So week 2 cases was 4 times higher than week 1. Then it doubled per week for several weeks before plummeting down to 10%.

This guys calculations were going up by a factor of 8. Obvious overblown hogwash

With China recovering and USA just starting it's epidemic, I wonder if the present world order of no. 1 and 2 GDPs will be reversed sooner than predicted.

Is there 2 cases now in Tipperary or is it just the one that the poster mentioned earlier and now has limited it to Clonmel? Bit confusing

There was now confirmation, just a TD looking for extra bed spaces in hospitals and full disclosure on cases from the HSE.

If the Mirror or Sun wrote a headline - Sean Citizen has killer virus - would you or your family be happy ? I certainly woud'nt

Have you no filter? Of course, you don't pay attention to that sort of tabloid speak. But behind that, there is information that the public should know. The fact that the Mirror or Sun is the vehicle for this sort of info and not the 'establishment' media - says a fair bit.

What we see is a Dept Health mindset seen often enough in the courts when they have defended the most egregious medical negligence cases even when the evidence is overwhelming against them. Not a healthy attitude.
