We really need a seperate thread for news and updates. I can well understand the need for general chat but it needs its own thread. Some posters have been excellent information gatherers.

This thread started as mainly a discussion about it.

It needs separate thread for factual statistical updates, 1 for the conspiracy guys over in the conspiracy forum and another for rational people to discuss it.

Added to help to illustrate the serious problem

The mortality figures from China for those infected with covid-19 who have other conditions…

13.2% for those with cardiovascular disease

    9.2% for diabetes

    8.4% for hypertension

    8.0% for chronic respiratory disease

    7.6% for cancer

And to finish off with cancer ->

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/cancer-rates-here-are-third-highest-in-the-world-warns-who-37366455.html

"Ireland has the third highest rate of cancer in the world - ranked only behind Australia and New Zealand, according to a global report.

Our inactive and unhealthy lifestyle habits along with the ageing population are leaving more people at risk of the disease.

The rate of new cases of cancer in Ireland this year is estimated at 373.7 per 100,000 people"

Someone mentioned earlier that the UK update around 2pm, do we expect to have an update at any time in particular?

From the Guardian on the French deaths
It is being reported in the French press that less than a week after the death of a high-school professor in the Oise region of northern France, two other people have died from the coronavirus in the same hospital. Le Parisien newspaper says it has the information from three sources.

“The hospital at Compiegne has suffered two further deaths, according to the last information I have,” said Philippe Marini, the city mayor.

In Nice, a three year old child was admitted to hospital with the virus.

How much would be counted as a high density town? 50,000? 100,000? More?

Well i would also not give them away as - ye know, id be broke.

Terribly sorry i even mentioned it now - I cant see how having a supply in local communities is a bad thing however!

I think you need to look up the definition of hoarding.

Anyway, the company im dealing with is at capacity and cannot deliver until june at the earliest, im pretty sure any healthcare agency in europe who deals with them have their orders in before me and also I will not be priority!

Its in my interest to protect my own community also, would you not like to be able to go to your local little shop and buy an N95 mask during this outbreak?

Everywhere should be doing it - Fact is I didnt want to even mention it hear as I knew the "brigade" would be out in force accusing of all sorts.

You’re being utterly selfish. Putting you and your community above other, more vulnerable groups. The fact that they can’t deliver til June shows the strain those factories are under; yet you’d rather order them for you and yours (who currently have absolutely no need for them) potentially depriving medical workers, older people and sick people in the process.

But hey, as long as you’re alright Jack.

Will this not depend on population size and distribution/intensity? China and Italy have very different scenarios in that respect.

Hi graces. I want to make it clear I am by no means an expert on this. Not even close. I just like calling out the obvious BS. Someone has to do it.

The R0 is a variable though that changes per country, region, city etc based on multiple factors like culture, climate etc. I'd imagine Italy's R0 is above the average because of their culture, but nowhere near as high as it would have to be for that guy's figures to be anywhere near accurate.

Documentary on Wuhan (Chinese state media).

Some of the 'conspiracy theory' footage from the start of the outbreak makes it in.

Three of my daughters classmates have texted her saying they are in the Omni at the moment, so much for some parents taking this serious.

I think if they did a survey and people answered honestly. I'd say they'd a large amount of kids from that school will be out and about!

Density is a factor of population to area, not just population in total. It's been a while since junior cert geography for me, IIRC Ireland is well down population density charts. And all the talk of Dublin being low rise and sprawled, I can't imagine as an urban centre it ranks too highly either.

WHO advising that it is not in pandemic territory yet as most cases are localised to China, all within one region.

Outside of China most cases are a result of cluster spreads from Chinese travel and not as a result of community spread, so a good sign.

Cases all over Italy at the moment (but mostly concentrated in the north and densely populated areas).
    984 in Lombardy

Lombardy population 10 million, 984 cases. I'm going to try and keep numbers like this in mind when fearing the worst. Of course this has real potential, probably more than potential, to spread like wildfire and drastic meastures are looking increasingly likely. But hopefully we can all ride it out to some extent.

I mean. Probably a bit easier when I imagine the total traffic in from a lot of those countries was low?
