98fm Adrian Kennedy Show had a parent of a kid from the school on.
Podcast should be up later today.
Interestingly, he says the boy was sick at school for a whole week (according to his daughter who is a classmate) before it was brought to the attention of the HSE.
Now, you can take that show with a pinch of salt if you like but they are going to keep in touch during the week with him so some background check must have occurred
He says he wasn't told to keep his other two kids off from a different school but he has.
    He's also off work.

I still do not understand why the authorities didn't at least take all particulars of people on flights from Italy and follow up with them seeing as cancelling flights to/from Italy (the biggest infection vector in Europe) is such a no-no.

So many questions - the parent(s) of the kid, the school, the HSE, the government.

I'd imagine, if there is not a handle got on this quick, then a lot of countries will be looking to cut their ties with it.

This is a problem with globalisation when there is too much reliance on the optimum source of produce

Their models(quant or fundamental investment funds) do not account for major "black swan" events. Though a market neutral or net short fund might do better obviously. They also do not have the expertise to predict this, mostly because nobody has a handle on it, not even medical experts. I think they fed will not save them, certainly the ecb or London won't act, already on zero interest rates. I think the uncertainty is at its highest since the crash. Not a bad time to have cash reserves.

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

What are the odds on a second Irish case being announced today?

    100%?

In France if you or your child must self isolate, you will be paid for 20 days of work. Something like this needs to be brought in to Ireland if things get worse.

I've seen a few people in Dublin wearing masks in the last few weeks but they are mainly Asian people as far as I can tell. I was tempted to get one for myself but I saw from a poster here that it doesn't protect you from getting the disease. I was surprised by that.
I wouldn’t base any decision regarding my health on what any poster here says.

The general advice seems to be in relation to this outbreak it provides minimal protection if you are not infected - but this virus can be absorbed through the eyes anyway.

From what I have seen it is beneficial in not passing it on so should be worn if someone actually has the disease.

That's my understanding of the advice on masks.

But if it makes people feel better to wear them it surely can't do any harm.

If its true about that kid in the school being sick for a week, the parents should get into trouble.

There is such an attitude of "someone else's problem" with a lot of people. Until people are told specifically to do something, then they wont bother thinking about .it.

The probability of something coming along next year is quite low, thats what I meant by it.

Probabilities are memoryless. The fact that a major virus happened this year doesn't make it happening next year any less likely.

No chance China have big bucks and a giant and growing (or at least it was) economy.
There is a reason why other countries fawn over them.

Maybe they might curtail eating some wild animals though that might help their image!
Maybe start with bats and eating live mice..

Will be interesting to see the numbers out of France and Germany today. France has stopped testing patients with mild symptoms as numbers were too large.

My OH works in a primary school, the amount of parents that send their sick kids into school is frightening. Its basically child abuse in a way.

In fairness most "sickness" is little more than a snuffle. I know someone who self-isolates with a cold!

One thing worried me though, that recovered patients have caught the disease again? Does that mean that it is still mutating?

I believe it means that those people haven't built up an immunity to it however I think its only one person (a woman) in China that has been tested positive for it a second time. You probably need to take the positive from that statement in that she fully recovered from it the first time but was unlucky enough to catch it again but will hopefully recover fully from it the second time too.

Are there any discussions to cancel St. Patrick celebrations this year? Or are we just going to go ahead with it and hope for the best and probably end up with a lot more cases the weeks after

I don't think they're going to need to cancel them. I think people will avoid them en-masse and those who were meant to be participating will not want to take part. So there'll effectively be nothing to cancel. I know for a fact that neither me or my family will be going anywhere next or near places where masses congregate for the foreseeable future.

You mean they have the sniffles? Or a bit of a cough?

Very few, if any, parents sends sick children to school.

    Child abuse!? Jesus Christ.
