Is it just a badging thing then?
6 series got the 40d, 3 and 5 series got the 35d badging??

I did think there was a difference in tune but you never know with badging these days, can be as much about marketing as it is about engineering

The only difference is the badge. 35d and 40d engines are exactly the same. God knows why they did it that way. The petrol variants in the 3, 4 and 5 all went to 40i but the diesels stayed 35d except for the 6 and 8 series.

The newer gen stuff now is 40d, same engine as said. No 335d in the new 3 series, now a 340d.

i think he is in a position to comment too as he just sold a top spec 435d for a fair few quid less.

To be expected in a private sale. No come back if things go bang is there?

The mileage is low on the car for it's year which is what I was referring too. I did agree it was over priced, but from a main dealer. What would you expect?

Not sure why you're getting your knickers in a twist

On the likes of that 335d, the dealership will have a bit built into the price to cover certain things if they feel a customer will pull them up on it. When I got my 330d from Colm Quinns, they had the alloys refurbed (albeit a warranty job) due to whiteworm, they threw in a set of M-Performance mats FOC and put 2 brand new Pirelli P Zero RFTs on the back.

I wasn't, apologies if it came across that way. I was just agreeing with him, and opinions are like arseholes everyone has..:D

Sure look what Audi have done with badging now, its nuts too.
Only yesterday a guy told me his brother got a new 4 litre A6...........I can only assume its the 2 litre badged 40 tdi

first time I saw one I was like WTF until I remembered the new badging I'd read about on here.

And to add to all the confusion, according to THIS ARTICLE, BMW are now using an up-tuned 330d engine with mild hybrid in the new 340d. Therefore it's now a single turbo.

Horsepower is a bit outdated at this stage too, a bit like the yanks and their cups of water. Would be far more simple to use the Kw of power plus a symbol to indicate if it is petrol / diesel / hybrid / electric. I.e. 230d engine would be a diesel engine with 230Kw of power. Engine size or whatever is irrelevant.

Ha no hassle hooch, I'd be interested to know what Madness moved onto after the 435d? I believe that was lowered and remapped too....not many cars would keep up with that including the R.

    Except a remapped R maybe :D

I’d a mapped R and the 435 was even faster in a straight line, but a lot slower down a twisty road!
Haven’t got my new car yet but it’s nothing too exciting unfortunately.

In a word, twitchy. You would feel more confident in a BMW with the traction on anyway. It got attention all the time on the road though.

His would you compare the Stinger to the 4 series Mark?

Yeah the grip in that R would be hard to beat for a rear wheel drive bmw. Wasn't the 435d an x drive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah all 435ds are xdrive. The R is a lot more nimble than the 4, and has arguably better/more compliant suspension for keeping the rubber on the tarmac. Big 6 pot diesel lump over the front axle can be felt compared to the golf as well.

Exactly what you said in fairness.
What always impressed me the most about the Golf R is the damping was incredible and they really are very easy to drive very quickly. A lot of cars are fast in a straight line (like the 435) but a golf R is fast everywhere. I’d have another one in a heartbeat if I could.

I guess that's why bmw changed it up with the m135i to compete with the hot hatch sector, and the R in particular. Lighter 2 litre engine and 4 wheel drive, albeit forward biased. A lot of the 6 cylinder 140i petrol heads up in arms and hammering bmw, but it makes complete sense and a good move imo. Now if they'd do something about that front end though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Hmmm not sure I agree. All those hot hatches are becoming the same thing now, focus rs, golf R, S3, A45 etc are all 4 pot 4wd type affairs.

I'm not in favour of letting nostalgic thoughts or notions getting in the way of progress and clearly smaller displacement turbo charging is leading the way to meet performance and emission targets. Having said that, BMW had a unique option in that segment with 6 cylinders and rwd.

Their new fwd haldex type 4wd system is a major step backwards imo, and isn't progress but more looking at costs. At least Merc and ford can still do rear bias 4wd.

Obviously customers put different priorities on different things, but a BMW should have a rear bias drivetrain, esp one that claims to be an M lite type car.

I had the displeasure of driving a 2 Series Active Tourer thingy the other day for a few hours while my EGR cooler was being replaced. Jesus what a depressing car, really made me appreciate getting back into my 530d afterwards.

Had a nose around the showroom too while I was waiting for my car, they had a brand new red/orangish X3 m40i, sticker price of nearly 120k. Had a really nice interior but that colour just screamed too much attention to me. Would have been a better sleeper in a darker colour that doesn't scream look at me. I sat in an i3 too and was really surprised at how spacious it for the size of it. They also had a nice new G20 Touring but nearly 60k for a 320d is just nuts imo.

120k for that x3 is sore too, BMW UK were giving those away a little while ago with £20k+ PCP deposit contributions meaning folks were stepping into them for nothing. 500 quid a month or something then.

some of the stuff bm produce, dear god! I mean look, take the money by all means. But I saw a one series coupe the other day, the thing is so bad and cheap looking, I just laughed out loud in my car. The two series is laughable too!

Presume you’re talking about the x3M competition Bazz.
    Crazy money.
I look at the Bimmerpost uk forums and the deals are so cheap for some of these cars it would make you cry. Vintage vrs has mentioned the x3M deal which was a give away. At the moment a new 530d is 389 down and 389 a month on stock cars.
    Huge discounts on m340i too.
BMW uk who control Ireland seem a lot less happy to start large discounts or cheap deals to move metal. VRT Doesn’t help either.

Sorry, yes it was the full blown x3M.

Yeah, we get robbed here but that's nothing new not or just with cars.

Same happened to me when I was getting my EGR done - 2 series active tourer. What an absolute piece of sh!t not deserving of the BMW badge,

My wifes 2007 VW golf is a better car.

I agree, there is not much that will keep with an R on a backroad, even an M2 couldn't keep up with Joe A3's old one on a run we had a few years ago.

Id rather be in the M2 though. A lot of cars are getting too quick now, and blink and you'll lose the license. Think for that type of driving I would prefer a little light NA hot hatch with no torque and tonnes of revs. You'd never break the speed limit, and would be loving it.

You should buy a Fiesta ST, they are some the best fun FWD car out there. Getting cheaper now too, 10k would buy an early one around 2014. I know they aren't NA but they drive very like one, reminded me of my old VTEC Honda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Well this is what's in my head at the minute. Problem is most of my driving involves sitting at the speed limit on an N road with cruise on, and the odd over take. My current car does that very well and I wonder would a small hatch that revs and rattles more crack me up after a week when the novelty wears off.

Ideally I'd have two cars, but that's not a runner as cost is nuts.

    This 100%.
I reckon a front drive NA with about 200 bhp and light enough to be fun is the sweet spot.
