Exactly my thinking, sounds like you're trying to encourage me...

I do have my car for sale at the moment and have alerts on autotrader for a mk3 Clio RS :)

They changed the co2 on them around 2011 and that makes all the difference. The older one (although it's identical other than co2) Is 195g/km and the one I'm after which seems to be more limited selection is 190g/km.

This changes the annual tax from 1200 to 700, which I could justify to myself, but not 1200 on a Clio.

I could never spend that money on a Clio :D

First point id make is the q7 is a current model where as the x5 has now been replaced

Interior in the Audi looks very bland, and those half leather seats are cheap looking. It looks well on the exterior though, nice colour.

Carsfan is the man to give you some insight, he was looking at these recently, although newer models I think. Might be a good idea to have a good extended spin in both as they are both from the same dealer.

I think the interior of the Audi looks a lot more modern.
The BMW looks a bit dated technology wise. It has the full leather seats going for it though.

Im on my 3rd X5 as it is so I know what they are about.

    Pros Audi: Carplay
Cons Audi: Wheel Size & half leather

Ah fair enough. Have you driven the Q7 yet to compare them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭Immortal Starlight

Unless you really want a fancy sound system I'd go for the X5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I wouldn't see the half leather as a con. I'v been in one of the Q7s a bit lately, and usually I'd choose BM over audi but they are very nice inside. Agree on the wheel size though, a pot hole has already caused issue to the owner of the Q7 I was in.

Maybe it's the all black interior in the Audi but I don't think it's much to look at. Not a fan of that long "vent" across the dash. Reminds me of the Passat. Neither are great in fairness and the x5 is the older model.

Well this is what's in my head at the minute. Problem is most of my driving involves sitting at the speed limit on an N road with cruise on, and the odd over take. My current car does that very well and I wonder would a small hatch that revs and rattles more craic me up after a week when the novelty wears off.

Ideally I'd have to cars, but that's not a runner as cost is nuts.

How about downgrading a bit on your daily and getting 30+ y/o classic for fun. €56 p.a. tax and cq. €300 insurance. Plenty of interesting and quick stuff from the late 80's / early 90s in that category.

Yeah that could be an option alright, but not sure what I would go looking at. I restored an old 3 series a couple of years ago whilst daily driving it and it was a bit much. What cars would you suggest?

Depends on what you're in to. German, Jap, American?

I had a couple of tank tanks a few years back that were great fun. They look and sound great but you wouldn't be throwing them in to corners or anything. Thirsty feckers though!

I'm gonna call that guy if my car sells...

Couldn't do it as a second car though, that would be the daily.

If there's a cheap reliable fun car that qualifies for classic tax etc I'd be up for it and keep what I have but I'm not as clued in with older stuff. I presume no type r stuff is that old yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,628 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think it needs to be 30 years old for classic tax.

    Prelude?

Keep an eye on the early 90s stuff on Done Deal. A large engined 92 / 93 car would currently be expensive to run (un-economical, high tax, difficult / impossible to insure) and therefore fairly cheap. Spend a year or so tidying it up and then avail of cheap tax and insurance.

I had a '93 Audi Quattro Coupe 15 years back that was an absolute hoot to drive and handled like it was on rails. Would be approaching classic status now and I'm awful sorry I didn't hang on to it. :(

You'd be embarrassed if this rocked up beside you. https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-m140i-335-bhp-2016-162/23309543

Was looking at that myself recently. Looks spotless. Strong money though and high enough mileage I think.

Strange way to look at things. I'd still prefer the older one.

Would be hard to justify paying 8k more just for the 2 year warranty if they are are in similar condition. Bar the carbon black one being x-drive they are very similar in spec.

I'd prefer the colour combo of the xdrive one but not for 8k more.

The one in Colm Quinn’s is one I linked a few months ago when it came up on Carzone and had half an interest in it at the time. Has adaptive suspension too but is very strong money for three year old car. Carbon black is hard to keep I believe.
The warranty plus I suppose the fact you can get bmw finance is probably a draw but still a lot.
I guess they bank on the fact somebody will eventually pay. It’s there a couple of months now.
You thinking of moving to a g30?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Almost 15k miles less, far better colour combo (the cognac with carbon black is stunning) and a better spec with a 2 yr warranty....hmm, 8k is a bit much alright but it's a far more appealing car, for me anyway. 5k would be more acceptable. I really dislike that bluestone metallic colour in the G30. Does nothing for it, my opinion of course!

Have you driven the G30 yet bazz? I've only sat in them myself.

I had a similar colour interior in my e60 and in my f10 and was the reason I bought them. Everyone commented on it getting into them, people not used to it.
Have black interior now in my a6 and I miss the tan or cognac

There's always a faster car at 3 times the price

I remember seeing that one myself on carzone too a few months back, then it was sold. Wonder why it's back with Quinn's again so soon? Can't be 6 months ago when they had it for sale originally.

Won't be changing for at least another 12 months anyway and looking around now I'm struggling to think of what to replace my F10 with. I'm open to both petrol or diesel. A G30 530d or 530i is an option but they are still pricey enough even at a few years old. A G20 330i would also be on the cards as I'm happy to move down in size to something more nimble. I'm not discounting a hot hatch either at this point.

FWIW my F10 is carbon black and it's not the worst colour for maintaining. No matter what colour it is it would still get dirty on some of the roads I drive daily. At least with carbon black you get some pleasure from it after a good detail, it really does look the business when cleaned.

I've a black edition Audi A6 and yeah black really looks the business when all cleaned up and sparkling. It's really tough to keep clean in this weather though but at least it looks clean when it's lashing rain. Until it dries and you see the dirt
