I'm not sure why you're not satisfied with the response. I wouldn't get involved in either advocating for it against the Apu character.

I also wouldn't advocate for or against taking the Simpsons off the air.

Sometimes real life isn't as simple as advocating for or against things.
Both of those are are business decisions. I get that you would prefer to blame the woke and the loony bins, but fact is its a business decision to tailor the show to its target audience. Neither you nor I get a vote because we don't watch the show anymore.

You've posted quite a few responses here and made quite a few points which seems strange for someone who claims to be 'neither for nor against' Apu or the Simpson.

I prefer the direct answers, so being direct I have to say I don't believe you. I think you do support generation offended, you should own it though rather than taking the convoluted route.

Anyway, I'd said I'd leave it there if you dodged my yes or no questions and I'm a man of my word, feel free to have the last word.

    All the best.

White people are usually to blame, well white men really!

But anyway seen as how Apu is so evil, there's a few more Simpsons characters that need to go:

    1. Groundskeeper Willie - obviously, Scottish stereotype.

    2. The Leprechaun - makes fun of the irish accent, not acceptable, I'm boiling with outrage at this character.

But at least in those cases, they got a Scot and a Leprechaun to provide the voices. Just cant find a link, but have seen it listed.

The Simpsons has always been full of stereotypes, it's a ****ing cartoon. No reasonable person thinks that all people from India are like Apu, he's a caricature of a stereotype. Every time they went to Ireland, every possible stereotype is on full show and all we do is cringe at the stupidity.

Exactly, he bowed to pressure to stop doing it, and the main reason it's all up in arms is because Hank is white.

Any openings for a fat, lazy, stupid white fella to play Homer? I'm thinking of a career change :-)

It makes perfect sense when you consider that I said I don't watch Simpsons anymore. Therefore I don't have strong opinions on what characters they should keep or not.

But you have decided to deny the facts presented to you and create your own interpretation, so there would be no need to ask what I think because you can just make up my answers for me. That might make like simpler but won't make you more informed.

And a woman does Barts voice.

Is Nancy Cartwight getting the sack too? She actually does a few male characters, so surely the outrage will be magnified.

It's a cartoon that rips the phish out of every stereotype.

Might as well cancel all Japanese animes so, nearly every male lead is voiced by a female, and think the same may be said of the dubbed versions.

In the past few months writers and voice actors were on the receiving end of abuse by generation Z on Twitter. Surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Now let us all go do what this generation has given the world, go eat tide pods and tax everyone to oblivion for owning a car with an internal combustion engine.

Is grounds keeper Willie still on the go?
Surely offensive to Scots and/or those that look like Paddy Holohan / Conor McGregor?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I am half Indian, my Dad's Indian... and neither of us had any issues with the character. Just took one irrelevant nobody to say something, backed up by the ego stroking PC brigade who aren't the ones "affected", to echo chamber their voice into some 'cause' while completely overlooking the FACT that this show is entirely centered around harmless stereotyping and caricatures.

Hate this faux morality and outrage culture the ̶W̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ West has delved in.

    "First World Problems"

Can guarantee you had someone voiced a 'concern' on some "white" [yellow] stereotype there wouldn't be much of an outcry by these lot.

I still watch the first 10 seasons every now and again. Great great TV, even if its a cartoon.

The stuff they said and did back then, I can only imagine would cause huge outrage online now-a-days. Which is sad. When did society as a whole become so sensitive?

I think we should round up the most offended woke people in Ireland, put them into a room (about 30 of them) and make them watch some classic films, like Blazing Saddles, Airplane, and other 'couldn't be made in the current PC culture' films, record it and upload it to youtube. There's money to be made!

Man I love those 2 films, absolute classics, be brilliant to see the reactions of generation offended watching them :-)

Stick on a few old Bond films as well just for good measure, the ones with Sean Connery slapping árses.

Or keep the character of Apu and keep him being voiced by an experienced and successful actor, you know, Hank Azaria who plays the parts of other people....for many years in both The Simpsons and film industry...

When Mr Azaria plays comic book guy, should every fat, overweight geek want that part played by someone other than a skinny, middle aged actor ?

Ah well, we can blame Hari Kondabolu for this anyway, he's the one who took the offence and didn't just air it, he created a documentary on it. At least I'll know not to watch anything he's in. Be great if South Park did a skit and created a similar character to Hari Kondabolu and called him Captain Buzzkill.

Millennials getting offended because a Jew impersonates an Indian on a cartoon? Hmm.

Thankfully classic Simpsons predates the woke Caliphate.

Always amuses be when the anti-woke types bring up Blazing Saddles as an example of something the woke types would dislike. BS was about a town which need a black bloke to be their saviour the people started off racist and ended up overcoming their prejudice. You'd swear it was written by a committee of the PC brigade...

A big old Sasanach played Dev in that movie and people didn't lose their marbles over it. Kitty Kiernan was protrayed by an American lord save us an guard us.

First generation immigrants tend be tough as a leathery old boot and couldn't give a sh*te about characters like Apu. Second generation kids end up going to do Arts in UCD off the back of their parents labour and are a rather more sensitive bunch perhaps.

I know that, most people who have seen the film a few times will know that, but it's these woke types who wouldn't be able to see it, wouldn't be able to read between the lines and just take offence to it. That's why it would be funny, they wouldn't be able to see past the initial offence.

Surely nobody watches that film any more for that very reason. Its grossly offensive, and comparable say, to watching The Eternal Jew, and thinking it a mighty fine and informative film.

Sure. And what do you take from the fact that the scenario you outlined above, hasn’t actually happened? The young people have access to all the media, but haven’t gotten upset about Blazing Saddles as so many people in these threads, predict they will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

They haven't got round to it yet. I dunno, I don't follow the upset woke crowd. As I said, I want to get the easily offended into a room to watch it and record the reaction. It would make money. I didn't say it has already happened, I didn't infer it would happen, and tbh I really don't care if it never happens. But if lyrics from 'Baby it's cold outside' were changed to appease these bellends, then I'm sure getting them to watch Blazing Saddles will have a similar comedic outcome.

And you don't think so, which is totally ok, we will agree to disagree on it.

Yeah I don't think it will ever arise. I think the frequency with which the offended by the offended, anti-woke crowd bring up Blazing Saddles as being next on the woke crowd's list, you'd think they might have at least made a bit if a stir about BS. But not yet.

The anti-woke crowd would cream themselves with offence if it ever happens though.

I'd have no issues with that. Liam Neeson who played Michael Collins has also played several characters in movies that weren't Irish. Should he have said no to those roles?
And by the way Liam Neeson is from the U.K. Who Michael Collins fought against.

I have no problem with it as long as they do a decent job.
Liam Nesson did a decent job as Collins despite being from Belfast.
Alan Rickman did a good job as Dev in the same film and Rickman was from London.

What gets me about the whole thing now is that Irish people seem to be dying to be offended by things that the Americans get offended by. Or American issues.

Things like Irish people do #notmypresident and guff like that oblivious to the fact that as Irish people Michael D. is your president not Trump!

Also if you look and how all nations are stereotyped in the Simpsons it is not only Apu. It has just attracted attention because his character is 'a person colour' as they say now.

In these situations I always see way more people angry about the so called 'PC Brigade' than I see people calling for stuff to be cancelled, if the Simpsons was still in anyway decent then I might be foaming at the mouth too, I've no intention of ever watching a new episode so I couldn't give a sh1te
