Seemed like a very nice woman. But my opinion she was a terrible broadcaster, who just happened to be there because she was there since the early days.
Her voice was grating, she constantly interrupted her guests to give her own opinion. The subject normally came back to the economy (no matter what the initial topic was supposed to be) - which she was not qualified to discuss.

Hopefully RTE will replace her with someone who had the same level of drive and enthusiasm she clearly had - when she started in her career at RTE. A good opportunity for a revamp I think.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I would be insincere if I came on here and said I thought she was a great broadcaster.
My mother was Finucane's demographic. She is an avid listener of most things on RTE - the radio dial never changes in the kitchen.
Even she admitted that Finucane sounds terrible interrupts etc (as above). But my mother claims she liked the topics on the show. Politics/economy etc etc etc. Basically if anyone was doing the show she would listen to it.

And I suppose I am not supposed to say Marian F. seemed like a nice woman?
A nice chatty woman with plenty of opinions on certain subjects, even though she was supposed to be the presenter on the show?
Most of which seemed to start with "well I think..."
That is the phrase I will always associate with Marian Finucane - may she rest in peace.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Go crawl back under a rock if you can't display an iota of decency.

I don't agree with the pay packet for the work put in (hours on air + whatever amount of additional hours), but ffs, show some common sense please. There's a time and place

Used to love listening to her, one of the few in RTE who probably justified their salary.

No matter what you think LOL has no place in an RIP thread.

We are still in the early stages here. Just give it a rest for a day or two please.

Since some posters appear to have been dropped on their head one time to many allow us to spell it out: Be polite and considerate when posting in this thread or you'll face a forum ban. Oh and we in the mod team define nice as we see fit; yes we're all desperate power mongering dictators bla bla bla so suck it up buttercup or face a ban for it.

RIP. It must be a terrible shock to those close to her as it seems to have been very sudden. I'm not quite old enough to remember her on Liveline, but I enjoyed the weekend shows. The talking heads reviewing the papers bit was pretty tedious but that's the format rather than herself.

Incidentally the thread over on AH is a disgrace. The mods seem to have done their best with it but there is a very nasty element on this site which seems to have gotten worse over the years.

What’s very clear is that there is there is an awful lot of anger towards RTE from licence fee payers at this very moment. So when one of their lesser working and over paid workers passes then a certain amount of emotion and apathy spills out which is fair enough. So maybe a tribute book of adulation only thread should be set up in this instance to cater for both parties.

I enjoyed her show whilst making breakfast at the weekend. Will I miss her and do I give a sh*t? Not particularly. That’s life, someone far worse off and a lot hard working died a few minutes ago.

Just listed back on the website to the last radio show she hosted which was back on December 8th, the poor ladies voice sounded really bad. Brendan O'Connor had been presenting her show for the past 3 weekends.

Marian was great in her early days when she hosted the likes of LiveLine etc and for that alone she deserves credit and our respect. May she RIP.

I did think though that in the last decade or so that she was treading water, the odd gem of an interview but a lot of fairly predictable repetitive stuff too. And some hypocrisy but maybe it's impossible to avoid that in a long broadcasting career.

Those of us who love radio are to put it simply in mourning for one of the greats of Irish radio.

There will be plenty of threads and time to discuss the problems of RTE in the future.

It is inappropriate to be using her untimely sudden death to take a swing at RTE.

They shut the other thread because of nonsense like this. You have no idea how hard she worked or didn't work. There is more to her than RTE. She has done amazing charity work & a lot more.

Tumpers mother had it right. If you can't say somethin nice, don't say nothin at all.

Indeed, the amount of talented posters out there who think you can just rock in and do a radio programme without extensive prep and command a 367k audience is quite astounding.

The cost of sponsorship for her programmes was 210k for twelve months. Combined with the spot adverts, it more than paid her salary.

    RIP.

I listened to her show because she got decent guests.

Never a fan of her knowledge on certain subjects or style but Jesus some of the things people were typing elsewhere its a person with family.

    RIP

Very intelligent lady , I loved her voice thought it was a perfect for her job!
Were losing all the good ones !

It was no surprise that Marion could have such a large listenership, many, like me, had much respect for her professionalism as a broadcaster.
No doubt, her status, brought out the handful of begrudgers. Some of them are on this thread, showing as much respect today - of all days - as they are capable (and culpable) of. Decency shows itself in so many ways!

Ah now, that's as bad as some of the ridiculous sub-human posters.

It's possible to have respect with being a fan.

No, they shut it because some very sick and disgusting remarks were made. I commented on why people may not feel that sad about one of RTEs elite highly paid passing. She was overpaid for whatever 4 hours of radio took to make. Don’t include me in that bracket of comments, it’s not comparable.

Her charity work is neither here nor there in what I commented on so bringing it into conversation is irrelevant and a very poor attempt to discredit what I said.

She was very talented, quick witted and I found her to be very sharp and informed on all sorts of topics right up until the last broadcast, I enjoyed listening to her always. As I said, that’s life, she had a very good one. let’s have a gay Byrne mark II nauseating charade of excessive adulation? no thanks.
