Marian Finucane RIP Mod warning #46

Was quite shocked to hear of the death of Marian on the news just now. Hadn’t known that she was ill, and didn’t think too much about her absence on her show as she used to travel to South Africa a bit. May she Rest In Peace.

I have no more information than anyone else, but as an unreconstructed smoker, I'm shocked but not surprised at this news.

Marian was a real pioneer and a fighter when she could easily have been downtrodden by the misogyny of her era. RIP.

I’m shocked and saddened to hear of Marian Finucane’s sudden death. Marian brought us lots of superb interviews during her career but it’s her interview with her friend Nuala O'Faolain (after receiving a terminal diagnosis) I will always remember. It was the most powerful and moving interview I ever heard on radio.

If there is a heaven, I hope Marian is reunited with her old friend, Nuala.

    It's a car crash of a thread.
Some people showing no respect for the recently deceased.
    I'd advise avoidance.

Totally agree. I think she deserves a respectful RIP thread here away from After Hours nonsense

Very unexpected and quite a shock on this quiet peaceful post NY evening, and a terrible blow to Irish radio, especially so soon after the death of Gay Byrne. Excellent interviewer, never came across as hectoring or bullying unlike others who shall remain nameless. That’s a very rare skill.RIP Marion.

How terribly sad. Marianne was brilliant. She brought star quality to radio with her eloquence and talent. She could wipe the floor with many a presenter with her versatility and in-depth knowledge all delivered in an easy, natural way. A brilliant woman.

    R.I.P.

Used to love listening to her, one of the few in RTE who probably justified their salary.

    RIP

That is very sad news, Marian was a very talented broadcaster and she will be very sadly missed.

She was a driving force behind The Womens' Programme back in the day which was very popular and gave a lot of Women a voice on the air

    RIP

    300k per year salary ,

Will my TV licence be dropping by a few euro this year?

She certainly was a great broadcaster in her day, but unfortunately in recent years this became increasingly overshadowed by the discussion of her salary. Particularly when she moved to the four hour weekend show while retaining a six figure salary.

    RIP

    RIP.

Was she in the audience for the Gay Byrne tribute show? I can't recall.

Always found her guess the song lyrics competition quite entertaining!

She had an uncanny knack of reading the lyric out in a slightly stilted way - so even though you knew it very well, it took ages to register with you!

I wasn't always the greatest fan of the show but for better or worse occasionally I tuned in, as I regularly have to make a long drive on Saturday mornings.

While I didn't always agree with all of her opinions it was often quite entertaining and she seemed to be a really genuine person.

    RIP.
Thoughts go out to her family.

Seemed like a very nice woman. But my opinion she was a terrible broadcaster, who just happened to be there because she was there since the early days.
Her voice was grating, she constantly interrupted her guests to give her own opinion. The subject normally came back to the economy (no matter what the initial topic was supposed to be) - which she was not qualified to discuss.

Hopefully RTE will replace her with someone who had the same level of drive and enthusiasm she clearly had - when she started in her career at RTE. A good opportunity for a revamp I think.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I would be insincere if I came on here and said I thought she was a great broadcaster.
My mother was Finucane's demographic. She is an avid listener of most things on RTE - the radio dial never changes in the kitchen.
Even she admitted that Finucane sounds terrible interrupts etc (as above). But my mother claims she liked the topics on the show. Politics/economy etc etc etc. Basically if anyone was doing the show she would listen to it.

And I suppose I am not supposed to say Marian F. seemed like a nice woman?
A nice chatty woman with plenty of opinions on certain subjects, even though she was supposed to be the presenter on the show?
Most of which seemed to start with "well I think..."
That is the phrase I will always associate with Marian Finucane - may she rest in peace.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I don't agree with the pay packet for the work put in (hours on air + whatever amount of additional hours), but ffs, show some common sense please. There's a time and place

We are still in the early stages here. Just give it a rest for a day or two please.

Since some posters appear to have been dropped on their head one time to many allow us to spell it out: Be polite and considerate when posting in this thread or you'll face a forum ban. Oh and we in the mod team define nice as we see fit; yes we're all desperate power mongering dictators bla bla bla so suck it up buttercup or face a ban for it.

RIP. It must be a terrible shock to those close to her as it seems to have been very sudden. I'm not quite old enough to remember her on Liveline, but I enjoyed the weekend shows. The talking heads reviewing the papers bit was pretty tedious but that's the format rather than herself.

Incidentally the thread over on AH is a disgrace. The mods seem to have done their best with it but there is a very nasty element on this site which seems to have gotten worse over the years.

What’s very clear is that there is there is an awful lot of anger towards RTE from licence fee payers at this very moment. So when one of their lesser working and over paid workers passes then a certain amount of emotion and apathy spills out which is fair enough. So maybe a tribute book of adulation only thread should be set up in this instance to cater for both parties.

I enjoyed her show whilst making breakfast at the weekend. Will I miss her and do I give a sh*t? Not particularly. That’s life, someone far worse off and a lot hard working died a few minutes ago.

Just listed back on the website to the last radio show she hosted which was back on December 8th, the poor ladies voice sounded really bad. Brendan O'Connor had been presenting her show for the past 3 weekends.
