If it becomes compulsory it'd better be across the board. Not telling one sector to cut numbers & another sector allowed to expand.

    It will be I expect.

Nitrates reduction voluntary now, in a short few years, it won't be.

Nitrates levels will be forced downwards through a number of measure's. Dairying will be the most effective. There is already talk that the dairy cow will go from 80-100 kgs/year. This will reduce maximum stocking levels from over 3 cows/HA to 2.5 cows/HA ( at maximun nitrates level of 250kgs/HA). It wll also push all dairy farmers into doing a nitrates plan as all will be above 170kgs stocking levels. Out wintering pads, uncovered cubicles etc will all be banned.

This is planned at EU/national level for 2028 at the latest as AFAIK. It will put pressure on beef farmers to access land, to get there heifers BnB'ed. Any that have beef operations will have to exit.

I was going to apply for the beam scheme but I don’t think I will now, after a lot of sole searching, I spent years building numbers and I don’t fancy having to reduce them at this stage

Same as. Took over the home farm 2 years ago and trying to build numbers. Not going to reduce now. Too much work put into it.

How much would you have to reduce by?

Bruiser Hogan was in radio this evening, saying he was really embarrassed in the Brussels corridors of power by the poor take up of the scheme by farmers in Ireland.
Reckons farmers played the poor mouth to get cash from Euroland. Then turned their arses on it........

    Poor Phil ...,..

    heard that
applied yesterday its worth 2,400 to me. herd reduction should be no problem

Had a look in Ballyjamesduff Mart today, anyone selling cattle there will have no problem with a 5% reduction.
I'm as cynical as anyone but keeping two less cows in my paddy fields in exchange for €1400 is a no brainer.

1600 here, a week earlier and.. , never mind.

Was building numbers up but take the chance to reduce inputs.

Nitrate reductions will becoming in as compulsory at some stage, not far off.

Each to his own need and system.

Beam scheme is 40/cow plus slaughter premium on slaughtered animals 100/head. For a farmer getting it on suckler cows only it may not seem as attractive. 20 cow herd @ 40/cow 800 euro. However you should apply anyway and see what way the cards fall in 2 years time at worst they will atke all the money off you.
Most suckler farmers getting over 1K would be finishing as well. A farmer with 20 cows bringing 19 to slaughter would get 2700 euro. It shows how fickle the system is

so i leased more land from earlier this year..am i right in thinking that makes no difference? they want you to deduce
your heard numbers.. its worth 2400 to me but still wondering maybe better if i had more cattle next year rather then reducing ..will have too much grass...

You're absolutly spot on in relation to the subject of land. Reduction of livestock manure by 5% is the name of the game .....

Reduction of bovine livestock manure. No mention of ovine etc

suppose the smart thing to do is ...apply for it anyway and if things(brexit) do not scuttle us all ...can always buy more and give back the money...

No mention of ovine manure today so far WC, but, watch this space ...

That's exactly what I'm planning, get rid of 2-3 cows in exchange for 12 sheep.

Looked at it there I qualify for it for what I killed in the window all I’ll get is the price of a finished Bullock so I’m out, to much hassle trying to worry about nitrates as well as all the other paper work so fcuk it I’ll not loose sleep over it.
The way things are going I’d be as well off taking down every internal gate buy min stocking rate and let them roam the place from one end of the year to the next. No silage, no shed, no tractor, no fert no nothing. Only time to look at stock is herd test.

Changed my mind might as well apply and take it no point in leaving it behind

I'm the same here. Going to take it now and if I have to give it back in 2021 what harm. A lot can and probably will happen in the next 2 years so may as well take the few ££ on offer!

It being hinted that some of the rules/conditions may change between now and the reduction year. Saw an article in the FJ yesterday where a suckler farmer was not applying as he had an issue with heat detection the year before the reference year. Lads may be allowed to use another year as a reference year

Maybe so , I applied anyway as its worth 2k but it will be undersubscribed and the balance of funds will be diverted to some less deserving cause as is typical with these insulting mickey mouse schemes.

See that IFA called on the Minister to extend the application period for BEAM so farmers can apply in person at the 2019 National Ploughing Championships.

Extending the dates for qualifying for the slaughter top up would be more in their line, my cattle went on the 13th May, my cattle were fed silage and meal the same as the next man whose cattle went on the 12th May and yet i won't see a penny.

It just goes to show how disconnected they are with farmers.

IFA are looking for €1bn now so it can be extended, that's he reason they were pushing farmers to apply for BEAM.
