Beautiful if a bit nippy out tonight.

Some lad in Enniskerry commented on that fact but was holding his headset as if on a call so I totally snubbed him by mistake. If you're on here I'm not some arse, sorry!

Was glad I listened to her self and took my jacket when I was out earlier this evening. Nippy indeed but a lovely evening to be out all the same.

are the idiot cyclists coming out after the winter? going into work along the Grand canal Luas section (im going west), cyclist coming the other way , so I make it clear Im moving beside the wall so he has plenty of space to pass and he follows and does the same, hold my ground and slow down and he does the same, basically had to come to a stop, told him to learn some basic cycling conventions. How can some people be so stubborn

So, I'm on my way home from a short training spin. I'm in the cycle lane going down an incline in the road. A car coming from the other direction turns right and crashes straight into me totaling my bike and sending me off to hospital in the back of an ambulance.

Thankfully its all soft tissue damage with some suspected damage to my ankle ligaments and bruising around my back (and all over). I'm out of action completely for a week and I'll be on crutches for a while after that but TBH I'm counting myself lucky considering the impact.

So, I was wondering has anybody any experience of this kind of thing? My bike was worth upwards of 3K. How will the lady who hit me's insurance deal with this kind of thing? If it was a car she damaged it would be repaired straight away.
Any advice or shared experiences would be helpful.

All traffic collisions, involving personal injuries, must be reported to the Gardai and must be investigated by them.
Did the driver admit liability? if so, make a note of it. Write down how the collision happened, while it's still fresh in your head.

If you haven't done this, do it as soon as possible.
You, as an injured party, are entitled to certain information. This includes name and address of driver, details of her insurance, registration number of car involved. You can get this either from the driver or the Garda investigating the collision.
Make sure the matter is reported to the driver's insurance company. I'm sure the driver is going allow them take care of the matter.
Keep any and all medical receipts. Get quotations for repairs to or replacement of bike.
It is my experience, that insurance companies will pay repairs/replacement costs to the bike pretty much straight away.

Thanks Eamonnator, the Guards attended the scene and have all her details so I'll get in touch with them and get her details.

At least if the insurance will replace the bike quickly enough it'll take the edge off the whole thing.

BTW, if anyone needs a Ring of Beara entry I now have one available.

no experience of this myself, and this may only be the way one insurance company operates, but i know a chap who was knocked off his bike and the insurance company almost had a checklist.
you were taken away in an ambulance? that's €4k.
how much was your bike worth? refunded, no hassle.
did you lose consciousness? that's another €Xk, etc.

yep, don't lose sight of the potential costs associated with your injuries. ankle ligaments can require a significant amount of physio to get them right - I did mine playing football before and had several sessions of physio yet my ankle will never be fully right.

the long term costs associated with your injuries could be much more than the cost of replacing your bike so I'd advise to at least consult a lawyer on that front.

the PIAB website isn't working for me but this link gives an indication of how it works.

Thanks lads, I'll keep all that in mind. I didn't lose consciousness luckily, my torso and shoulder took the brunt of the initial impact.

So I wonder can I look to have my bike replaced asap and then hang on and see a solicitor if needs be to recoup costs incurred.

Also, is it an option for me to press charges? I'm not one normally to hold a grudge, accidents happen but there a lot of children using the road for school and the negligence from the driver was beyond what you'd accept as an accident. I don't think she should be on the road.

Also, the message needs to be put out there IMO that if you hit a cyclist you could end up in court.

I'll answer the bit I can - the Garda will have to decide if they see reasonable grounds for a prosecution, but will also be influenced on this by your interest in proceeding. it would involve giving a lengthy verbal / written statement and being prepared to attend court as a witness, I think this discourages a lot of people as does the snail's pace of the Irish legal system. so afaik you can't "press charges", just influence the Garda to do so.

I presume you don't have a bike camera with a recording of the incident? did the driver already acknowledge liability / fault? were there any other witnesses?

I was involved in a similar collision a number of years ago.
I wrote about it on Boards.
    Here's link to that thread.

Speedy recovery maldondo, been hit by a car at speed myself a couple of years ago and it is a nasty shock to the system.

Cycled up Kellystown road to Ticknock over lunch and took one of the MTB trails there on to Kilmashogue for what was a fun descent down the empty fire-road. Slightly less fun when I heard a squealing from my rear brake coming up to one of the corners and found out the pad was dead. Rather more restrained descent down Kilmashogue lane with just front brakes working. Good fun for all that, but the climb up Kellystown left me knackered before even getting off road and my MTB skills still border between non-existent and non-existent but ballsy.

Speedy recovery maldondo. Luckily never been in your position so can’t offer any advice.

Cold start this morning but warmed up by midday. 100km around NCD, checking out the route for the VCB sportive this Sunday.
A few hills I’ve not done before and a fairly pleasant route - mostly clear of traffic. Didn’t see many folk out, which was surprising

Been about 10 years since went up kellystown road when I was living in that part of the country. Decided I wanted to head up for the view on the way home from work on a heavy steel frame POS mtb bike in jeans. Made it to the bend to the right before ticknock and abandoned the bike in the trees there. Walked the rest of the way up and sat on some logs eating my sandwiches and drinking diluted orange.

After an hour or so of watching the world go by I headed down and retrieved my bike from the woods and enjoyed the roll down hill. Passed a fella on a road bike heading up who looked at me as if I was crazy :D

One of the few things I miss about living down there, always worth the effort to take one of the routes up or up and over and further on.

The change in the weather is fantastic for commuting. I thought i was losing fitness during Feb/March even though i cycled nearly everyday.

Nasty breeze from Alfie Byrne road to the wooden bridge in clontarf this morning.

135km done with a ramble around the Copper Coast Road, windy but enjoyable even if I had a hape of intervals to do.

As the wind as gusty a few cups were picked up and snagged a local KOM I've been waiting to take.

    135km @ 30.3 avg & 1,000m of elevation.

Surprisingly strong headwind inbound on the canal this morning, some gusts were causing wobbles

Commuting in this morning and was cruising along the cycle lane along the canal around Harold's Cross, I move out to overtake a guy on a Giant Hybrid and he puts the hammer down leaving me out in the driving lane, I just looked at him and asked ‘why?’ and he kind of laughed so I called him a twatwaffle and put the hammer down. Same twatwaffle then gets to the lights at Rathmines and barges his way to the front, gets a **** takeoff when the lights go green (going east on the canal this junction would have roughly 20 bikes stopped on red each sequence during rush hour) and delays everybody. Normally this wouldn’t irritate me but it did today.

Out Saturday with a group I'm probably a little ahead of so felt good, wasn't really too taxing.

Today climbing up the Dublin Mtns and a youth member of the club blitzes me out of it during his hill repeats. Might be 16 or so. Solidly back to earth with me

Took a spin on the Mullingar-Athlone greenway this morning, drove to Mullingar so had to do it out and back. Really nice spin and great weather for it. 86km done at an average of 30.7km/h.

If you enjoyed that, try Mullingar to Longford on the Royal Canal Greenway. You won't manage as fast an average but it's a lot more scenic and you can always take the train back to Mullingar if you don't fancy the return spin.

That's an impressive average for a greenway. I presume it's paved?
