    Kill in june instead

How easy is it to replace cattle in June? Do cattle not be scarce in marts?

There is not a load of buyers either. Cattle bought in Mat/June will often still have compensatory growth and may well do 150+ kg to housing. A poorish May/June yearling could be a great store to house for the following summer.

Sold a mixed bag of bull weanlings Saturday, about 8 months old. Averaged €2.26 per kilo. I don't know if that price is low or high but I was more disappointed in their weights than anything I think

Brother always says anything below 2.35 per kg is disappointing?

He could be right, it would depend on quality too. In fairness most of these were out of black cows and wouldn’t be good quality stock . One lad out of a blue cow was closer to 3 per kilo so that says there is still decent money for the right stuff

I'm curious as to how he arrived at that figure as a conclusion? it seems an arbitrary figure to me versus than a one based in reason. My own preference would be to average as close to €2.50 a kg for weanlings and €2.20 a kg for stores as possible. These figures sound good but have little independent influence on profit, the production cost is as important as the final price imo.

In relation to Bullocks query I think €2.26 a kg for a self described mixed bag of bull weanlings was good going in the current market. Weanling prices have improved in recent weeks, particularly for the higher quality types. These good calves circa 300kg are capable of making around €3 a kg at the moment. The lesser type calf is improving but from a much lower base, having said that it's not to many weeks since I observed large numbers of average type calves at similar weights at circa €2 a kg. The weights may have been a disappointment but the price was reasonable imo.

Thank Albert, you pretty much summed it up, the black lads never hit the big prices. I am a bit disappointed with weights alright compared to last year and think they went back a bit as calves during the drought possibly. Maybe the cows slacked off in milk when they e needed it most

I'm a fan of traditional breeds and think they should be utilized more in the national herd due to there genetics, ease of calving, easily fleshed and a smaller carcass being some of the major advantages imo. However I think for anyone operating a suckler to weanling system there not a good fit generally. You need to be able to finish them or at least bring them through to the forward store stage to avail of the benefits. If selling as weanlings it's impossible to beat the continentals particularly Charolais cross calves for the higher price per kilo. Traditional bred stock are never going to achieve such prices and can't carry as much weight so are unable to compete on either front.

These would be lightesh weights but €700 average, - €800 max
Heifers in Ennis mart today were a poor sale. Bulls were better, but buyers were only interested in good quality Charolais and even better quality lmx.
Overfed stock not leaving a return, fat Weanlings 400kg plus selling for €800 -€950 average.
Plain stock still a disaster, struggling to make €2/kg at times
Plain heifers often selling for less

I tried to sell him at 10 months ago when he was 480kg but I was only offered a little over €830 for him so I took him home with me
