Called into Castleisland Mart today only saw the suckler cow, bullock's and a few of the heifers. For any lad willing to calf a cow or heifer there was a few bob to be made. Hereford first calvers incalf to LM or AA , 750-800ish euro, a HE heifer with calf at foot 850 euro, Ch cow aged but good frame with bull calf at foot 900 euro. Lm incalf heifer 900 euro. Only two went for big money good young children cow with a flaking 3 week old calf (looked older) 1400+ euro and an average LM heifer a farmer was buying 1250 euro.

He and AA 2017 bullock's 400-500+ were making around 2/kg maxing out at 500 with there weight.Fr Bullock's 500+kgs 340-370 with there weight. A few heavy Bullock's fit for slaughter were making 100-150 less than they would make in the factory.

I only saw a few heifers nearly all suckler LM they made about 2/kg and we're 200-370 kgs.

Were you tempted to buy a few of those Lmx at that price? Can't believe they were at that and grass in sight

TBH I would seriously consider getting back into sucklers but unfortunately I don't have the time to keep/calve down numbers. I have the 2 pb sh heifers and 14 six and hex yearling heifers that I might pick through to ai to sh this year.
A elderly neighbour who has a top class suckler herd has already chosen a bull for them.

What age are the sh heifers now? Are they in calf yet

was there many cattle there Bass, Gortalea must be hitting their numbers big time.
there was a bit of value in heifers at that money even if they were on the light side

They had only the one ring going bullocks in at 2.30 and finished before four. So not a huge amount for Castleisland but it is early in the years yet. from what i saw of the heifers I taught most would struggle to kill 330 DW at most in June 2020 so would not consider them great value. The heavier Heifers would ne slaughtered pre and post Christmass and price of cattle lately is not great then

Friesians and suckler were the only value if you could manage the dealers.

less than 20 days, calf on He heifer was only a few days old. I made one mistake the older Ch cow was not calved but incalf to CH bull and she was a CH not CHX. Her time was virtually up she was due to calf withing two weeks I think

Avg 12 months, big mart today. Finally getting finger out to counteract MB. First time in long time saw 2 trucks with yellow regs!! Think was biggest mart of ytd, but still nowhere near size from few years back. Don't think anyone like to see it gi by wayside. A,certain auctioneer has been demoted to calves only due to his tricks and new, auctioneer on trial today, was able handle certain ringside buyers pretty well.

Apparently another incident a month ago forced CM hand to act.

I sold a few Angus calfs in skibb today, i was talking to a farmer with calfs he said he was up early because a lorry collected cattle for gortatlee. Good lot of cattle in skibb today. The competition of king Mauty just was what it needed, Tom was out trying to source cattle last month.

ya but mauty could guarantee a price but tom could not,Tom and m c called out to my brother a month ago to look at 30 aa blks 500kgs Tom said they might make 175 to185 a kg mauty bought them in the yard at 2euro a kg.

I know its after waking things up around here. But remember we still need a mart in skibb, if we could get proper prices.

Something allot of places could do. One mart that takes zero crap around the ring is thriving and going from strength to strength.

One that was the exact opposite is gone and another that's going the same way. They can play all the tricks they want, but if the farmers get sick of selling or buying in said mart it dies.

How can a mart owner guarantee a price as a farmer i would not be buying there as I suspect taht I would be bidding against a girder on the back wall

Probably has clients with orders to fill and knows what they will pay.

It’s a great system for the sellers though,he will buy them in the yard on a price per kilo or buy them outright(price per head),all you have to do then is organize transport and head off to work!
It takes all the variables out of a day at the mart, think they have a similar system in France

I brought 5 bullocks to Castlerea today for my uncle, 4 CH and 1 LM all late spring 17 born. They were outliers and nice cattle but not exceptional imo. They ranged from 510-530 kg and made between €1200-€1290 and an average of €2.35 a kg, the boss man was well pleased and I thought it good too tbh. There was about 24 pens of bullocks on offer, a lot of middling stock with good buying for quality at any weights.

Are people finding that the quality of store and weanling on offer is getting gradually worse there seems to be a widening gap between the price of plain and good quality cattle is this because quality Cattle are getting scarce?
