If they can make it as good, and get the critical acclaim The Wrestler did, then yeah grand. The Rock, Stephen Merchant and Vince Vaughn isn't screaming out at that kind of movie, but who knows?

Merchant helped write one of the most critically acclaimed shows in the last 20 years I think he can write a good script.
Apples and oranges though right? I mean this isn't the first movie he has been involved in.

Some people taking it hard that this movie is getting made. It's a family story about growing up in wrestling & they strike me as people who have been through a lot. People saying it'll only appeal to wrestling fans is naive it's not like that for any movie, only dancers go to see La, La Land or comic book fans go see those movies. If they tell an interesting story it will draw enough attention to draw in more fans.

Yeah it struck me as such 'in the bubble' thinking. The idea that Johnson, Vaughn and Merchant are on board for a product that is going to live or die based on PAIGE FANS is very amusing to me.

Yeah, because celebrity actors have never been involved in anything that was destined to flop before. That has never happened. Ever.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,952 ✭✭✭Monokne

No one is arguing that it will be a success.

It is like Straight Outta Compton movie, I enjoyed it even though I was never a fan of N.W.A before watching movie.

If it's clear as day the movie will be awful then yes it's easy to spot a money grab flop but I don't see any reason why someone would put this in that bracket.

It won't have a major budget so there isn't so much downside, yet if they make a charming feel good family movie then it could easily appeal to a mass market and do very well.

This movie really has very little to do with Paige in truth and I'm sure she won't even be used as a major marketing ploy, it'll be just sold as the story it is. I watch a movie talk show on YouTube and when discussing this they never even maned her, just said it was based on a documentary and it could work.

My point the whole time was that it's not a very marketable story outside the wrestling world. I don't think that many people have an interest in a story about the independent wrestling world.

If you can turn it into a potential Oscar winner like The Wrestler then you're onto a winner, but I think otherwise if you're making plans for the weekend and you see something like Hidden Figures, or even something more lighthearted like War Dogs, then even if you haven't an already held interest in the people that the story is about (which is how I think people interpreted my point), people would naturally gravitate towards those stories ahead of this one.

I'm not saying that this has no hope, moreso that it can't really get away without being great, because it's not a story that would capture the immediate interest of those outside the wrestling world. IMO at least.

Surely if the rock is there we might be getting an appearance

Bit weird that they're going to have Paige's actress on the show, as Paige, when the real Paige hasn't been on Raw in ages (through injury and other....stuff, admittedly).

Florenece's neck must be killing her trying to look at their faces. Liked his comment about Merchant. Did they know each other outside of this and The Tooth Fairy?

Rock posted another picture showing "Paige" practicing a submission on the actress who will be playing AJ lee. So the guess seems to be the scene they are filming tonight is Paige's Raw debut...

I'm guessing Paige could do lines of the white stuff in the middle of ring in front Vince and she wouldn't get her third strike until the very earliest till after this film is released.

Tessa Blanchard is the ring double and Thea Trinidad playing AJ?

Amazes me that neither Tessa and especially Thea aren't under contracts. Maybe this changes that.

Thea is good in the ring, and she has the look they like, plus they are always looking for stars of different ethnicities. And she's engaged to one of their guys.

Thea did compete on a match for NXT didn't she? Perhaps that and this will help her get her foot in the door. She was very green when I saw her in TNA as 'Rosita' but she definitely showed lots of potential. And they do appear to be low on Latina women if Nikki and Eva are on their way out, JoJo's just ring announcing, and Bayley seems to be presented as white. They've always wanted to keep demographics full.

Definitely did at least one match on NXT and she was a Rosebud as well. I think she was at some of their recent try outs too.

    Holy smoke:eek::eek::eek:

I didn't know it was written and directed by Stephen Merchant. The Office (UK) and Extras are my favourite comedy shows by a country mile. The more and more I see of things Gervais and Merchant do since, it really seems Merchant was the brains behind it all.

Will certainly give this a chance.

Big gags wasted in the trailer.

Gotta say i think that trailer makes it look like the drizzling ****s.

Will give it a shot though.

Actually its out on regular release in the UK/Ireland on March 1st so probably no need to get to that straight away.

Wonder how widely released it will be.

He wasn't at the Cannes showing so I'd doubt it....

He seems busy filming the Hobbs spin-off movie.

I know very little about the movie review websites, but isn't Rottentomatoes just whether you liked the movie or not? As in 86 out of 100 said yes as opposed to no when asked if they liked it

If it is then it could easily be given 4/5 out of 10 then for marks right?

Rotten Tomatoes deems whether critics reviews are positive are negative. What this means is 86% of the critics who have reviewed this film have said it's good or great or some similar superlative. It does not involve a voting system, or indeed any input from the general public.

Personal taste obviously accounts for something, but broadly speaking, a film that gets 70%+ on RT is going to be worth a watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Yeah, it's one of those sites people use to back up their opinion if they have the film fresh and say it means nothing when rotten. I mean Last Boy Scout has a rotten rating so you know the site can't be trusted. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

Are people hoping this movie sucks?

I think personal taste comes into it TBH. I enjoy thrillers, just a genre I like. There are not that many truly great ones. Ergo most will have a bad rating on RT but I'll watch 'em anyway. I think generally stuff right at either end is reliable - you won't see anything 90%+ that isn't a really well made film, and anything under 10% is going to be a catastrophe.

    Saw it on Wednesday night

It was decent alright. Some genuine laughs and heartfelt emotions, with plenty of inside nods that only wrestling fans would get. One tone-deaf, cringe-worthy moment near the end, but very enjoyable overall

    Calling Paige and her brother
    Make-A-Wish kids
almost made me spit my drink out :D

Btw the documentary it's based on is available on demand on All4 at the moment

I’ll probably watch it next weekend provided it doesn’t disappear from cinemas before then. I’m pleased for Paige that it’s being well received. She seems a nice person at heart and she’s had a rough time of it in recent years. Hopefully it helps her in whatever’s next for her.

Saw it yesterday enjoyed it, acting as ok Vaughan can be so wooden

the AJ Lee in this seems familiar lol

Now too wait for the Hogan movie
