Thank you for the kind message. I don’t think I could have done more as I work full-time and was up at all hours. Well done on getting all yours in one sitting...Any tips welcome. :)

For me I cannot learn all topics as I know I would not remember the case law if I were to cover everything. Although I will know the general answer to a problem question let’s say.

I am not out to make things easier on just myself (i.e all for me so I pass!!) if and when (being positive) I passed all the exams I would still be in support of change for others sitting. Even if they just abolished the magic 3 and let a person keep what they passed.

    I pm'd, hope it helps!

Has anyone heard anything back from the Law Society about viewing our paper.I applied for a time slot but have not received any response.I fear slots will be filled pretty quickly.

I haven’t either, or about receiving a copy of the paper. I can only view on the time I requested so I really hope they get back soon.

    Hi Guys.

Hope nobody is too disheartened after the results!

Was wondering if someone could pm me a recommendation as regards those clients that sell access to notes on Adverts and the like

For anyone who has passed, do you have any subject-specific study tips?

    For me, so far:
    - Constitutional - lots of reading; SC book/UCC blog; (humanrights.ie is no longer ran by Fiona de Londras etc but follow some academics on twitter); stay up to date with developments; understanding what the past PQs were looking for
    - Criminal - knowing the legislation well; breadth of case law
    - Equity - past papers and preparing answers
    - Property - really don't know how I passed! I think exam grids and having the topics that appear every year well-prepared from various angles.
    - EU - extra reading but avoided cases; podcasts; past papers again

I know there's no formula that works for everyone or for each subject but it might be useful to share (i.e., I need all the help I can get with the rest!)

After a long weekend waiting for the results (Couldn't get the Law Society log in to work) I got my results in the post... and passed Equity! Completely gobsmacked - I know from reading this thread it's a tough one and I felt 100% sure I didn't pass it since the injunction question coming up a second year in a row meant I had to nonsense my way through another question I wasn't comfortable with.

I don't mean to diminish the comments from everyone who's had difficulties with Equity, because it is a tough one to be sure. Just a word of encouragement that equity isn't an insurmountable obstacle!

Also, I want to share some of my sample answers online, but I'm conscious of the fact the law society presumably owns copyrights in the exam questions. Curious if anyone knows a way to avoid infringing their IP rights - possibly by just summarising what the issues in the question were, rather than posting the question itself? (Sadly IP isn't a big part of the FE1s, I wish I knew the answer to this question myself)

Criminal was my best subject and the most helpful thing I did for studying was writing out a table/graph like so: Offence, Governed By, Actus Reus and Mens Rea. It's such a quick way of revising and for all the non-fatal offences it kept it short and to the point. Criminal is one of the best for not needing extraneous detail, if you have the offence and the elements you are sorted. When it comes to defences, have about 4/5 cases on each one.

Property I think the main thing is knowing succession inside out! You're pretty much guaranteed two qs on it so practicing problem qs on it is super helpful. I feel it is one of the subjects that is quite theory heavy but also not too complicated.

Constitutional is tricky - the exam I was most worried for. What seems to be reaaally important is actually having an opinion as a lot of constitutional deals with more philosophical qs like separation of powers, judicial independence etc. If you can actually explain why you believe some constitutional interpretation is right/wrong you are on a good track. Otherwise just an insane amount of case law I'm afraid.

Equity is weird. I was sure I failed and got the magic 50%. I think try not to rely to heavily on predictions and stick to the grid. Learn ALL of injunctions, estoppel and undue influence. Again, caselaw is important here!

Best of luck to everyone in the next round :)

Does anyone know what firms pay FE1 fees ?

Does anyone know what firms pay FE1 fees ?

All of the top 5 (likely top 10 by now), and getting less and less likely the smaller the firm gets. Not sure anyone's compiled a full list, if that's what you're looking for.

I’m planning to do contract, company, equity (did these 3 in October but failed one but a few % so have to repeat all again). Thinking of adding on 2 extra subjects for March. I’m currently leaning towards criminal and then I’m between tort, EU or constitutional for my final one, any thoughts on these subjects in general or advice?

I’m not doing property as I feel it will overlap with equity a bit and I know it’ll just confuse me and get things mixed up.

    TIA

I did Contract, Company, Equity, EU and Property in October.

My advice would be to take Property because of the overlap with Equity actually. For me, it reduced the overall syllabus of both to learn and it was nice enough to go through it so by the end you can add cases you maybe did not have in one to the other. As well Property is a short enough syllabus. But that's up to you.

EU was huge but then I cut out quite a lot, prediction wise I was not very lucky - thought it was my 'worst' exam... had the best grade in it along with property so.... I think the examiner grades really nicely. I feel it is an 'easier' subject to pass. I basically invented one of the case notes because I did not remember what it was about or anything, felt I did a really mediocre job on 2 other questions as well... worked out fine, go figure!

Did not do Constitutional, Criminal and Tort so cannot give an opinion other that I picked subjects for my first sitting I had done the most recently in college and that I liked more.

I’m not sure how many of the top 5s still pay FE1 Fees. They all cover PPC but I know that some don’t refund FE1 Fees anymore.

Working in a top 4 firm who pay FE1 and give study leave

Yeah I got a TC in a top 4 firm and they are not refunding the Fe1s. Also know another top 4 firm who don't refund them either.

Guys what exactly was the update on criminal law/what year that was important in the recent few years that might not be updated in older manuals? I remember reading it here somewhere... TIA.

Otherwise if anyone would like to swap materials (especially more or less recent sample answers etc) I am looking for them for criminal, constitutional & tort. I have a good few bits on the 5 others. Just PM me to discuss that.

Moderator: Hi everyone, sorry to butt in with this but we have been doing very well on this point in recent times, aside from a few posts recently.

A reminder that there is no trading of manuals or other exam materials allowed on this forum due to the fact that disputes cannot be resolved when they arise. Please use designated trading sites for exchange of these materials.

For the first time in a long while, I have had to issue a couple of warnings and delete posts today.

Hi guys has anyone else not received an email from the law society confirming time slot for viewing paper this weekend?

I tried ringing them on Friday and was told system was down all day so had to leave only voicemail and emails.

I need to make travel arrangements so wondering is it worth it heading up tomorrow anyway?

Got a recheck previously and nothing came of it so really want to see the paper first before making a decision either way.

    Cheers!

Junior cert pass is 40%. LLM is 50%. Medicine is 60-65%. 50 is fair and I think necessary for professional exams.

There’s a separate thread that might be of interest though: https://touch.boards.ie/thread/2057917486/8
Or search “FE1 challenge the rules”

I have a LLM..... It's not 50% to pass anything. Nor are there any exams. It's assignment based (in UCC anyways).
Medicine is 40% or 50% depending on exam.

Personally I wouldn't unless exception, because it sounds like (unless you think you done fantastically well like should have got into the 60's) that they marked your whole paper.

Most people have said in cases where they did badly like got 38 percent knowing they definitely did better it turned out parts of exam question was skipped and they got brought up into the 50's. The common thing I was told was anything from 45 percent is rarely brought up. Totally open to correction but that is mainly what I have been told.

Did anyone here view their paper? Was pretty useless I thought, but expected as much, didn’t have my hopes high. I viewed criminal and he just had a few ticks and then the mark. Anyone other examiner give any more notes?

Tort was the same, just the mark but at least you can see which questions the examiner thought was ok.

No just the overall mark out of 20 at the end of the question

I checked my Contract paper yesterday and both the internal and external examiner marked mine. I got a 46 but the external brought it down to 40! When do the external examiners step in or is it just a random selection of papers that they review? Was considering getting it remarked but having had the external examiner review it already it's probably not going to change?

And no reason written for that? Surely a record would need to be taken of why that decision was made. I've heard external is a random process.... That's just a guess though as absolutely no material whatsoever is provided by the law society on how they mark exams.... Will never understand why they cannot just publish an agreed marking scheme??

My 45 in Property was the only fail checked by the external examiner - maybe they check the exams that are close to a pass?

    Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been dealt with but looking for some guidance.

I plan to sit tort, eu, equity and property in March 2019 and was wondering do I need to get new manuals or will my march 2018 manuals be ok?

Also, looking to sit a 5th exam also. Unsure whether to pick criminal or contract. I want to pick whichever one is easiest or less difficult haha.

    Thanks in advance!

I didn't go to the viewing but the Law Society have emailed me a copy of my Equity paper. It was just marked by the internal examiner and there's literally not a mark or tick on my paper except the grade at the end. I suppose it's useful to know what marks you get in each question but that's about it.
