    It's an odd one.

I think there was an element of tribalism and siege mentality when it came to defending Grobblers recruitment and selection.

On the other hand Kimmage has a bitterness on this topic that has moved him from a reporter to an activist and beyond. He can't help himself and he goes way too far which ultimately dilutes his campaign against drugs in sport. It's reached the stage where his exuberance has left him largely irrelevant and he is growing more extreme as he slowly recognises that fact.

Yea he's effectively become the George Hook of doping, he just shouts so loud people have stopped listening. I wouldn't have been a massive fan of the GG signing but on a personal level felt hugely sorry for him in the way he was vilified. He made a mistake as a 21 year old while injured & fighting for a contract, served his time, should be over & done with IMO.

Well unlike George Hook he actually has a point, drugs are a scourge in sport.

Kimmage has a point on the bigger picture, but calling some random fan a 'f**kwit' over a pretty harmless tweet is totally out of order.

The guy has now made his Twitter private.

Well in the above case, no, he actually doesn't. He's shouting at Munster fans for supporting a player who at one point made a mistake, was caught by the anti-drug infrastructure of the sport, served a two year ban, eventually got a low paid contract with Munster, played very well for us when fit, due to the adverse press did not have that contract renewed, got signed by a mediocre team in England for again presumably a lower salary than he'd have received had he not cheated.

The guy's been punished, what does he want, a public beheading?

He shouts at everybody, and his ire was mostly focused on the IRFU/Irish rugby in general so don't take it personally.

He obviously believes 2 years isn't sufficient, would have thought that's clear enough. He also obviously believes this guy should never have been given a contract at any Irish province (which I agree with anyway).

Find the podcast where he's on with Luke Fitz to hear him address his own doping.

Grobler's own version of events is that he doped because he wouldn't have been kept on a pro if he hadn't. So, it's not true to say that he's getting a lower salary than he would if he'd stayed clean.

But I would say he's well paid in Gloucester anyway. The guy has done very well out of the whole thing.

I just knew he admitted it his autobiography. Might dig that out. I think his criticism could be a bit more nuanced especially given his history. I don't think any Munster fan would say doping is any way right, more that as pointed out GG was caught and served his ban. Don't think Kimmage's sensational tweet does anything bar stir up controversy for the sake of it tbh

Got a contract with Racing then got a contract with Munster.

Kimmage likes to soapbox, he has a point about doping and with the IRFUs own zero tolerance policy it was a misstep by them to bring in GG. But going after a fan is poor form

Being honest I think he cares about Irish rugby as much as Stevie Wonder cares about Irish rugby, he just knows it's a very popular sport where he writes & if he stokes flames it'll get clicks. He did a great job with the Lance Armstrong thing & is clinging onto anything he can to stay relevant.

What are people giving Kimmage the publicity he craves, let him have his rant, if it's ignored often enough he'll discover he doesn't really have a platform.

If people are genuinely annoyed with his stance then don't retweet his tweets, click on any of his online articles or buy any paper he writes for.

Isn't he still writing for the Indo? That would mean that no matter how much he is ignored on Twitter he still has a platform. And will continue to until such a time as he is let go by the Indo. I think it's far more important at this stage to be calling out this kind of abusive behaviour to his employers and to Twitter itself in an attempt to put a stop to it, no?

The Indo don't care - they've done worse. They have a sponsorship agreement with Munster however and might request he tone it down.

The referenced tweet hasn't gone down well. I've no doubt he's been told off over it.

George Hook is still working though so standards are at a fairly all time low.

Not a hope any sponsor is pulling out because someone is generating sales for the publication unless they do something genuinely untenable.

It's more likely Kimmage falls out with his own people and parts company with the Indo but it's unlikely to be based on something he writes.

I've been looking around, but can't find any info on it. Does anybody know what the situation is with Tommy O'Donnell? There was talk that he'd broken his leg, but that was never confirmed afaik.

Speaking purely from memory but I think it was confirmed not to be a break but a serious enough injury all the same.

If it's ankle ligaments it could be anywhere from 2/3 months and up.

yeah pretty sure it was diagnosed as ligament damage rather than a break... doesnt mean hes back any time sooner though

Which can take just as long. Unless it's minimal damage it still can be a season ended unfortunately

Yeah there was an update framed sort of strangely as "good news" that he hadn't broken his leg and had only done "serious ankle ligament damage".

"Standards" are higher than ever. Ten years ago Hook (or whoever) said what he said and it was limited to whoever was listening to the radio at that time. Without social media there would have been no furore and we'd all have just moved on.

We're living in a period of incredibly oppressive censorship, George Orwell couldn't have dreamed it up, and the truly mad thing is that it's self-inflicted.
