    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Had to take a detour home on Tuesday, and met 3 Corvettes whilst going past Mondello. And today, going by the Glanbia place in Rathcoffey, I saw 2 old mercs, an 87 and 84.

    It's amazing isn't it.

A Morris minor or classic Beetle is tiny in the back by modern standards.

But whole families travelled in them back in the day

    People were slimmer.
Kids didnt need something built like an ejector seat from a Harrier jet, just to sit in the back....

Dislike the tiny wheels and colour. I’m sure it’s appropriate colour and size but doing nothing for me aesthetically

    Oldest car, or Classic?
    You decide.
    In Cavan town this morning.
The owner appeared as I was taking the photo.
He bought it from the son of a deceased shopkeeper in Leitrim, and imported some body panels from South Africa to tackle rust in the lower outer panels.

Travelers were driving them yokes all over the place in the 80's, early 90's... Wouldn't be into vans myself so find it hard to appreciate them.

they were a fine van, had an 89 one from almost new and it never let me down, went like a train too. Astronomic mileage on it

Good old 2L Toyota engine.... Rebuilt one lately for a fella using parts from a short block pulled out of a hedge! the engine will probably out live me!

My dad had 4 Hiaces, one after the other. An 84, an 85, a 90 and a 98. All 2.4 diesel, and all but the 98 would do an indicated 100mph.;)
Indeed I passed my test in 2001 in the 98 van. That particular model in the pic looks to be a lwb. A fine van, apart from not being that comfy on a long journey due to the vinyl seats. It wasn't until the 95 on model that they got decent seats.

Yes the were all 2.4 engines but called a 2L engine, it was stamped on the block.

Did the 84 and 85 ones have steering colum gear change?

Ah I didn't know that about them being referred to as 2l engines.

Yes the first two vans were column change. The auld lad was going along one day when the clip fell off the top of the column, and vanished somewhere. Somehow he made it to a Toyota dealership who said they would have to order the part in. One of the mechanics had a quick look and threw on the horseshoe clip off a set of brake shoes, the one you would use to hold on the handbrake arm to the shoe. Well it stayed that way until the van was replaced.

If I was to buy a van for personal use, I'd definitely consider an old Hiace. So simple and reliable.
