Second report recommends Radio Nova to go national
Core’s Chief Investment Officer Eddie O’Mahony says the best option for the BAI in future plans to create more radio outside Dublin is to take Radio Nova national.

In an independent report, published in August, Core says the BAI has two clear options – create a new radio license for outside of Dublin area, or offer a franchise area extension to an existing Dublin station to extend it to areas outside Dublin.

It says creating a new FM licence for outside the Dublin area with a brief for an alternative genre will in our view not be a commercially viable option based on costs, ongoing investment and problems with not being available in Dublin itself.

As a specialised rock music service, Radio Nova has a proven track record in Dublin and is well positioned to offer a real alternative to listeners in a wider area in a commercially viable way. They have a tried and tested format that is succeeding in the market and worked and delivers for audiences and advertisers.” the “Listen Up: Our View On The Radio Market” report says.

Nova has made no secret of its ambitions to broadcast nationally and has made detailed submissions to the BAI in the last 12 months. The station claims it will create new jobs and bring a new radio service to some 1.7M people outside Dublin, should the BAI give it permission to extend its signals beyond the Dublin area.

Core predicts that, with competition remaining fierce for spend and listeners over the coming year, it is prudent to minimise the impact any decisions will have on existing services. However, the costs in setting up a new radio station and the ongoing investment required for marketing will not be a commercially viable option, according to O’Mahony.

“This is the second independent report that recommends the extension of Radio Nova’s broadast territory. The BAI’s own consultant, Mediatique, has already recommended the extension of an existing specialist broadcaster outside Dublin to the Authority; now, the largest media buyer in the Irish market has done so too. This is apart from our own independent research that shows that more than 90% of people outside Dublin want more radio choice”, says Nova CEO Kevin Branigan.

“The body of opinion that recommends the national rollout of Radio Nova is becoming; first our own independent research, next the BAI’s own consultant, now Core, the largest spender on media in the country”, says Branigan.

The BAI is expected to announce at least one new radio service for outside Dublin in the coming months.

Branigan says the extension of Nova to the more populated cities and areas of Ireland would bring a new, well-funded specialist service to 1.7M more people and would satisfy all of the BAI’s strategic objectives. Nova would create up to 10 new jobs in the process. “We could be broadcasting quasi-nationally within two months of receiving the go-ahead from the BAI”.

The BAI is expected to announce its plan for new radio licences in October.

Try Virgin Radio lads, they play a lot of Britpop but is a lot better than Novas recent playlist. Started listening to it this week and love it. If I want the news I can switch over to an Irish station whenever I need it!
