Lunacy. She should be banned from the sport for the quote below.

“You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry.”

That is not a rant. That is a threat, the likes of which is usually never seen in sports.

    What an utterly hysterical response.

Banning her would be incredibly dumb, it was said at a very emotionally charged moment where the occasion got the better of her, it would be very different is she had of said this the next day.

Indeed. When she has played more Tennis and gained more experience and matured she will be grand. Thank goodness it was the first and only time she's every done anything like this.

I'd agree a ban would be over the top, particularly as given her age it would probably be the end of her career and I understand she is also a mother!

    Jesus that was cringey..

A real "don't you know who I am" moment.

I know fluck all about the rules of professional tennis but i'm going to take a wild guess and assume the player doesn't get a say in who umpires.

She has so much power in the sport, also the Nike sponsorship, she is huge. She brings so much money into the sport that her power there is massive. So yeah that threat she made to the umpire carries a lot of weight, which she shouldn't be doing.

It would be far easier for the tennis association to hang the umpire than to take Serena on. Let's see who wags the tail.

The while thing is very cringey and petulant in her part, but I'm sure the fan and media will love her for it like hey used to with McEnroe.

Also no issues with her being penalised in and of itself, but has that happened before for shouting abuse at an umpire as some like McEnroe did all the time? If not (or as good as), hopefully it becomes a new standard going forward.

    Simple solution.

Women's tennis matches with female umpires.
Men's tennis matches with male umpires.

    Problem solved.

So in future when Serena (or any other player) is having a hissy fit and happens to threaten the umpire, she can't fall back on accusations of sexism.

She'll just use the race card then.
And if it's a black female umpire she'll use another card. Probably like a hero to millions being unfairly treated or some wa*k lol.

Following the match, the United States Tennis Association, which runs the US Open, released a statement from its president, Katrina Adams, hailing Williams for her “class” and “sportsmanship”

The same lady who was in charge of the presentation ceremony and at it's beginning said to Serena "Perhaps it's not the finish that WE were looking for today". How downright disrespectful and bias and showing no respect to Naomi Osaka and her stunning achievement.

The whole spectacle was surreal and frankly toxic. The only 2 real victims are Naomi Osaka and Carlos Ramos. Although perhaps the 3rd victim is society as a whole, where sadly this faux victimhood mentality has become more and more prevalent. I stand for REAL victims, not those who would seek to manufacture themselves as one and to try and use it as a weapon to beat people with, instead of owning up to their own ineptitude. I'd urge anyone who's on the old Twitter - to tweet a message of congratulations to Naomi Osaka - she deserves to feel a little love for her great achievement.

She ended up playing the sexism card despite simultaneously shítting all over a fellow woman’s history making achievement, she was grasping at straws, first it was cheating, then the verbal abuse and bullying of a match official and then the sexism angle at the end as she tried to find a reason for being beaten fair and square. By the time she acknowledged Osaka it was far far too late as the girl needed to apologise for winning the US Open to a crowd that were booing.

She was completely in the wrong, I hope she learns from it.

You're nor really in a position to judge, considering you tied to claim to coach never coached and then the coaching from the stands was permitted.

Insert pointless ad homeinem meme below:

In fairness, she could easily have played that card yesterday. There are people involved with the sport saying she may have a point with the sexism card (although that is not the time or place to make said point).

In response to Valoren's post: either allow coaching (don't see what the problem here is) or simply ban coaches from courtside as soon as there is evidence of coaching.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Some weak trolling here man.

Since when is responding with a gif trolling? Or are you referring to me having an opposing opinion to the people I responded to?

But yeah, another great input into the debate :pac:

An outburst like that verges on mental breakdown stuff.

That a professional at that level can act like that is seriously wrong.

In many sports you'd be barred from playing for quite a while and deservedly.

I've tried google translate but it's still unclear what you're trying to say.

I think you're saying I have an issue with her warning for coaching. You'd be right. I think it's ridiculous. And it happens at every match. A simple hand gesture. That she claims she didn't even see as coaching. But i've said all this over and over again.

The rules need to change and be clarified. Or a camera needs to be put on coaches and any hand movements or gestures result in a warning for their player. Perhaps just put coaches in blacked out helmets and straight jackets. The helmet would have to be secured though cos certain movements could be deemed coaching.

    Fvking ridic.

I'm beginning to think you lost a lot of money by Serena getting her ample arse handed to her yesterday.

Honestly I was never a fan of hers and always shout for the underdog or up and coming star, Osaka in this instance. But I think she's more right than wrong in this instance, and the stench of......something wrong in this thread with a lot of pond life is disgusting.

Inhumane, disrespectful, borderline racist, brain dead uniformed. The lot. Good way to get to know certain people's true personalities though :)

She is big and strong by any standards, she is also independent what with giving birth and bringing the child up on her own and breastfeeding between service changes, she is also black and a woman.

Serena Williams is actually happily married with the father of her child.

She's entitled to feel hard done by and even have a meltdown but this frigging nonsense is ridiculous

I've seen other men call other umpires several things,’ she said. ‘I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff. For me to say “thief” and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He's never taken a game from a man because they said “thief”.

'I just feel that I have to go through this as an example for the next person that has emotions, and that wants to express themselves, and wants to be a strong woman. They're going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person.’

This woman is the female version of Lance. I say ban her unless she comes out with a full apology

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭skepticalme

I've seen people lose their minds if they feel they have been accused wrongly of something. I've only watched the clip but it appears to me that is what happened here. She couldn't get control of herself after that which can happen. It was a shame for the other player and Serena has done her reputation no favours.

WTA association is backing Serena for calling out Sexism - what about Osaka's rights ?? she is a woman also - perhaps umpire did favour Osaka , but how it is deemed Sexism is beyond me , in that umpire would only be favouring another woman - is it that that some women are more equal than others ?? The crazy state of Political correctness gone mad , and people wonder how someone like Trump comes to Power , perhaps people are just fed up with uber Political correctness madness.

You put your finger on what this is really about.

Elite athletes are now hyper-competitive from a very young age and will use anything to win, Lance being the most notorious example. This explains the approach Williams has taken, attempting to bully the umpire into turning a blind eye to rules being broken and then throwing gender issues on top to get sympathy.

It's not that different from what many people in sport would do to win : for instance Ferguson bullying referees and getting Fergie-time. The difference here is that Williams has draped her fairly poor behaviour in the flag of gender equality, placing her beyond reproach from a large part of the commentariat and firing up a large base of blind online and media support. It's fascinating to see how it will turn out.
