Was watching some of his outbursts the other day and remembered just how cringy they were. He was very unpopular, I've come to like him but at the time I really didn't. There's one from the early 80s in Sweden, where he called the umpire a jerk, got an immediate point deduction, when the game was over he destroyed his rest station and was immediately docked a game. He thought he'd been disqualified.

Certainly wasn't treated more leniently than SW

Yeah and I was trying to figure out did i have that opinion of him given the passage of time but i remember enjoying it at the time. We all sat waiting for him to have a tantrum. It became part of the game.

People have meltdowns. We're all human.

What makes this different was how Williams destroyed a career highlight for Osaka which was an incredibly selfish thing to do. Then to ****e on about racism, feminism etc is just the usual horsehite these days and best ignored but of course gets a massive platform on Social Media.

The U.S media's coverage of this seems to be defending her.dissapointed to see the likes of the guardian running to defend her too.

I don't think there's any question that there are inconsistencies with some of the calls in tennis, and that needs to be taken into account, but I think it's ridiculous to claim sexism. She was soundly beaten, had some calls that went against her, and she lost her cool. No surprise that an umpire would penalise her for verbal abuse after the previous two penalties.

The mysogony/sexist/patriarchy posts are bull****, but so is the vitriol that is being directed at her. You'd think she'd murdered her opponent on the court the way some people are going on.

Rather than murder her opponent she assasinated her own character.

she has had a tough time throughout her life we get it and I personally have a huge amount of admiration and respect for her and what she has achieved . She is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time ,forget gender or Race or anything else she is one of the Greatest . However she should be ashamed of herself for that tantrum , you cant just pull the sexism card or race card or any other card because you are being beaten by the superior player on the day and that goes for men and woman . She is supposed to be a role model for the generations of players coming through and the way she carried on was ridiculous . To see all the woman's rights campaigners coming out now is also Ridiculous! I work with women's sport 6 days a week this is not sexism( and God knows there's enough real vile sexism that could be highlighted ) you were out of order, your coach cheated you smashed your racket and then you were abusive to the umpire and showed a complete lack of respect for your opponent which is the true tragedy here because she stole her moment and the crowd should be ashamed of themselves too nothing "sporting " in their reactions to the Champion . Women's sport has enough hurdles to jump trying to make a stand on this cheapens what people in sport are trying to achieve . She should apologise and become A true champion and role model rather than this unlikeable diva.

Following the match, the United States Tennis Association, which runs the US Open, released a statement from its president, Katrina Adams, hailing Williams for her “class” and “sportsmanship”

Katrina Adams with more bullshít. Happens to be black also.......

Me calling Serena Williams a piece of shlt does not automatically make me worse than her because I use such foul language. Who did I hurt sitting here?

Yes what Serena did was completely wrong but people need to get some perspective. Did Serena punch someone in the face? Did she bite someone? Did she try to shoot someone? She had a meltdown and it deservedly cost her the match but it certainly doesn't deserve all the abuse she's getting online and all the people using foul language to describe her are worse than her are they are clearly not acting like decent human beings.

It's absolutely insane how people, mostly older men, in this thread, seem to be getting so worked up about it. Many of them with no interest in tennis.

    Get a fvcking grip!

Yep, seriously, she's black. You seem upset by that.

I don't think the meltdown is the problem, it's more the justification that's the issue. I don't believe a guy would have been treated differently, she behaved appallingly and is now getting people on board with this sexism ruse. The BBC this morning were certainly on board.
Your one Osaka was lovely in the after match press conference and I saw her interviewed today and I'd say it's getting to her, she mentioned people keep asking her about Serena and the umpire.

You keep bringing up her skin colour, calling her a BIG STRONG INDEPENDENT BLACK WOMAN.

    Says a lot about you.

Lunacy. She should be banned from the sport for the quote below.

“You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry.”

That is not a rant. That is a threat, the likes of which is usually never seen in sports.

    Really ?

I would have thought she brought the game into disripute and acted like petulant teenager showing zero class or sportsmanship..

The world really has turned upside down..

I'm off to live in a bubble..

She is big and strong by any standards, she is also independent what with giving birth and bringing the child up on her own and breastfeeding between service changes, she is also black and a woman.

60+ posts in this thread later and still counting... I think theres only one poster here who needs to get a grip.

Its been a great thread, on many levels, sporting, tennis and socio-political.

Had to keep the kids away from the sportsnews last night, I didnt want the kids seeing her antics, Sunday evening is Tennis club family night in the Rigolo household and I dont want my kids picking up any of that behaviour, its bad enough one of them has a nike racket...

She threatened the umpire. She called him a liar. She claims it was a racist decision. She cheated with the help of her coach. Her behaviour was not that of a professional sportsperson. She should apologise to her fans and in particular Osaka. I also believe she should be banned for a year.

Probably that most ridiculous post I have read on boards in a while (and that's ignoring your posts in the politics forum).

    Jesus that was cringey..

A real "don't you know who I am" moment.

I know fluck all about the rules of professional tennis but i'm going to take a wild guess and assume the player doesn't get a say in who umpires.

Thats actually a very serious statement by Serena. Its basically a statement she gets to pick her umpires. How that doesnt bring the game into serious dispute i don't know.

Banning her would be incredibly dumb, it was said at a very emotionally charged moment where the occasion got the better of her, it would be very different is she had of said this the next day.
