Yeah I think he'll be gone by the time the trade deadline comes around. And there's no better time than the present to start Sam

Three way battle for QB.  Darnold and McCown are there to stay.  Bridgewater looks good and should have the chance for more playing time with another team.  Jets will probably showcase him more in the final preseason games in hopes of getting a good draft pick for a trade.  He would help the Bills, Dolphins and Patriots, but I doubt the Jets would trade him to divisional opponents.  The Bengals seems to make the most sense, then maybe the Jaguars.  And the Giants, Chargers and Saints all have aging QB’s where adding Bridgewater would be beneficial.

You can ignorantly accuse me of "whataboutism," but what it really is involves identifying similar scenarios in order to see if it holds up when the shoe is on the other foot!

I think Tampa could make a play for him aswell, WInston get help but get in trouble and he's definitely better than fitz.

The ideal situation for me would be to package him and a couple of high draft picks to Oakland for Mack #pipedreams

Bills now without AJ McCarron could be a bit more keen, I'm very curious to see what we would be offered though... Colts rejected a 2nd round offer for Jacoby Brissett, even with a couple more years youthfulness and an extra year contract Teddy is in the same area?

I think the Bills will role with Allen and Peterman.

I don't think they'll get a 2nd for him, at the end of the day he hasn't played a full regular season game in 2 years. I think FA shown how much faith teams have in him, as far as I'm aware the Jets were the only team that went after him.
I think a 4th would be more realistic or maybe a 3rd if some team got really desperate

Who's the starter for week 1 is the big question tho.

I've always liked Teddy and he would be my choice.

Josh is the starter, was always going to be the starter. It's not a big question at all.

Darnold wouldn't surprise me at all, taking nearly all of the first team reps now. I think it's fairly wide open.

I don't understand compensation picks fully but depending on how much he earns the following year we could be awarded up to a third for him? If that's the case better to hold onto him and let him walk at the end of the year potentially?

If they spend even half the money they have on FA or renewing contracts I doubt they'll have any comp picks for the next couple of years

I wouldn't be putting all my eggs in to the McCown basket, he's only played one series so far this off season. The 3rd preseason game is usually a good indicator of who the starter is going to be, so it'll be interested to see who gets what snaps.
I don't get not starting Darnold after they've invested so much in him.

Maybe they're worried about the not-very-good-even-when-healthy OL and unimpressive defense so far. Might want to protect the future somewhat.

Personally see it 70/30 McCown/Darnold, with Bridgewater carrying the clipboard or traded and some warm body as 3rd string.

There are numerous examples over the years of the long term future of a franchise benefiting from redshirting their first pro season. Josh McCown's $10m contract for this year is fully guaranteed, so they've paid him to play.

I dont by into that, they paid McCown before they'd drafted anyone. If Darnold out performs him in camp he should start in my opinion. People are acting like the Jets have Darnold for the rest of his career, they have him for 5. I dont see the point in cutting one of those years just because you've paid someone else.

Pretty much the only way I see McCown playing is if we trade Teddy and even then it'll only be until ~Week12 and then let Darnold take 4 games or so risk free and under no pressure.

special teams been an absolute nightmare tonight! And 10 penalties in the 1st have alone, discipline still a major issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭corner back 2

Just watched brief highlights from last night and have read the reports. I would have to admit that my optimism is starting to wane. Poor running game, very poor special teams, no pass rush and very shallow offensive line are all very alarming. Combine this with a continued high penalty count and you would have to wonder if a significant number of Jets players are simply not good enough. The bright spots are Darnold, Leonard Williams and the receiving corps but I fear that this may only carry us to 5 or 6 wins at most. I am also unconvinced about Bowles and his ability to motivate players and I wonder if he will last past this season.

This would have been all I expected them to get to be honest, they got 5 last year and they havent really added a whole lot since, this offseason was all about finding the future QB
I am also unconvinced about Bowles and his ability to motivate players and I wonder if he will last past this season.

I'm still of the opinion he should have been sacked last season, I just dont think he's head coach material
    very shallow offensive

It looked a lot better last night than it did last week, I konw thats not saying a whole lot though. The big issue last night was Qvale and to be fair to him he's not an LT. If Beachum can stay fit for the season they should be alright, if he gets injured their fcuked!
    Poor running game

I'm not too worried about the run game, none of them have really been given a chance to get a rhythm going so far, I have faith that come week one Powell and Crowell will be a decent 1 2 punch
    no pass rush

This is worrying all right and its been a real problem for a long time, it needs to be one of the first things they address next off season. One decent outside rusher would make a world of difference. What would you be prepared to give up to get a player like Mack?
    high penalty count

This was embarrassing last night, that sort of ill discipline starts and ends with the coaching staff!
    very poor special teams

Another embarrassing element of last night, there hasnt been decent special teams play since Westhoff left. If Cannon fields even one kick/punt this season the ST coach needs to be fired on the spot!
    The bright spots are Darnold

Needs to be QB1 on week 1 imo

A couple of other bright spots for me last night were Henry Anderson, he was causing issues for the Giants interior o-line alot last night, he could end being a very worth while pick up. Nathan Shepard was unreal in run defence last night, he's looking like a real spent 3rd rounder. Its great to see Q catching balls again as well.

Watched the full game instead of just the highlights... ST was an absolute disaster, we are going to be very heavily reliant on interior rushing and all of our offensive skill position corps could really go either way.

The only thing that gives me blind faith is I can't think of a position where we'll be worse than last year really, I'd really hope we can improve the penalty situation though. Also play calling can only get better right?

I think we've been saying this for the last 3 years, so that coupled with the new rules I can see penalties remaining a problem.

I assume they were only playing with a fraction of the play book due to it been the pre season

A lot of noise today about the Jets trading for Khalil Mack. I would be very uncomfortable trading away next year's first when we have no second and so many gaps on the roster. I think th he Jets should wait to see who breaks free in free agency next year or how the draft might break as I think they will have a very early pick.

We're not in win-now mode and we have more holes than just Mack to fix, also am I seeing it right that he is in his last year of contract anyway? Trading a first or more would be madness imo. He's definitely well needed and filling a huge hole, and we have the cap space for now, but draft picks are too valuable for us now.

Teddy Bridgewater traded to the Saints! Doesnt seem to be any details yet, but I'm going to say they got at best a 4th round pick

EDIT: Twitter saying they got a 3rd for him, good move by Macc if thats true

So the Jets have earned a third round pick for nothing. Darnold has looked good in pre-season (by all accounts) and McCown is a solid backup. Good business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭hots

Earned a third and gave up a 6th I think? Happy days and happy for Teddy, got a chance to make a mark for himself as backup to Brees and potentially get a long contract out of them too, don't mind the Saints so will be easy to cheer him on.

The only problem with this decision being that Bridgewater was clearly the best QB on our roster and was only 25 years old...

As much as I like Teddy and agree with yours statement he was always going to be traded sooner rather than later. I would of liked to see him start week 1 or 2 with the 3 games in quick succession but better off getting a third for him than waiting to see if a QB1 get hurt and some team gets desperate. If he got injured himself it would be all for nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,774 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

Or, you know, play him as the starter for peanuts for the season and maybe win a bunch of games?

Celebrating a third round pick is nonsense imo.

He's marginally better than the other two and was a 1 year loan. If it was the difference between being contenders or not then sure you'd want to keep him but we've the future sitting on the bench and a capable pair of hands in McCown, you'd be mad not to take the free pick!

Literally the only downside for me is that Darnold now likely gets a baptism of fire and becomes the second youngest QB ever and he's not exactly walking into a team set up for success this year.

this teams not good enough to win a bunch of games, regardless of who is at QB

Just like last time here preseason Jets conspired to lose a winnable game. Feel not going for it at the end when it was under 2 minutes was a mistake but overall meh. Its preseason so better to make mistakes here than in regular games. More of a sparse attendance this time but last time was on a friday night and the stadium is in a nightmare location.

Liked the look of Bridgewater and his pass for the TD was beautiful. Despite being sacked twice and his one interception he just looked like the experienced QB we saw in 2015 but his trade is no real surprise although IMO disappointing. Darnold played like a rookie but it will stand to him and his mobility and strength already shows he's better than Sanchez!

So it looks like McCown and Darnold will tag team the position this season.

Anyway for $50 being driven out by Capitol Jets and having a wee bit of tailgating cant really complain!
