Another childish response. You and I are done.

We've righted a terrible wrong today, but I can't celebrate the reality of what it means. Crisis pregnancies will continue to cause untold distress, no matter what option is taken. At least the person who it affects the most can now make the decision they hope is the best for them

I figured the actual result would be closer and predicted a 3%-4% victory for Yes.

If this poll is correct, that is a stunning result.

    :D

I thought it be as close as a Yes 3%. If accurate this is stunning.

Wonder if Mullins single handily handed sank the entire No boat?

The extremists hijacked the campaign to be honest. RTE and TV3 should not have given them a platform. But hey they make for car crash TV which broadcasters like.

The cool, measured, logical people on both sides will always be drowned out by the batsh*t crazy brigade. Such is life I suppose.

I geniuinely can’t remember a cool, measured or logical person on the no side.

So you think every pregnant woman is gonna to get an uncontrollable urge to have an abortion when legislation is passed? Do you tie your own laces?

I don't believe for one moment it will be anywhere close to that margin. No voters are afraid to reveal their true vote because of fear of retribution. It is easy to just say yes.

The campaign was run terribly on both sides. I was split down the middle, right until the last minute when I read the constitutional amendment on my polling card.

I don't think there is any cause for celebration. There are fewer rights in our constitution because of this vote.

How does something "seem" to be accepted by the majority? People repealing for the hard cases won this, now we have abortion for any reason up until 12 weeks. One came with the other, forcing people into an all or nothing vote. Fudge it up whatever way you want

    yup....still a land slide victory.

now take a deep breath and let that sink in

After all the talk of "I was going to vote Yes, but their pushiness/identity politics put me off," it sure would be a sweet dose of irony to cap this referendum off.

The Yes campaign timed their campaign to perfection. Hit their stride in the last week while No imploded.

The No side shot themselves in the foot with things like Ronan Mullen's reaction to that woman on the TV the other night. Talk about clueless.

I went into it in the past about a family member who was told her unborn wouldn't live, she didn't abort. Her child is living a normal life. All I got was hassle for telling the story so I don't want to go there.

Because your family member beat the odds. And I’m very happy for them. But you cannot make legislation or constitutional amendments that will affect vastly more people who will not beat the odds based on their extremely lucky experience.

Right wing? The right wing parties supported the Yes vote, a good old knees up for abortion, sounds like a wonderful time for all.

Abortion has been here since the year dot. All that is changed is that some will have to admit it now.

You cannot compare cancer treatment to abortion.

But you are right. The truth does hurt and here is the truth.

You are not telling the truth.
    The No side have lost.

Your opinions have been utterly rejected by the vast majority of the population.

You asked for Yes people not to crow and celebrate the victory. So why don't you be gracious in defeat and respect people's decisions that have been made in an adult manner.

You should really reflect on your own narrow minded overbearing posts and lack of respect for other people's views.

Same could be said for you. As I said earlier a great day for abortion on demand advocates. A terrible day for the unborn. Pat yourself on the back my friend. You've just removed the only protection unborn children have.

The thing is, what happens next?
There were many no voters who cleaved to all the major parties, FG,FF and SF. They now will feel totally disenfranchised. I know some SF diehards who were appalled at Mary Lou's staunch endorsement of a yes vote (and I'm no supporter of SF but she alone had the guts to have her photo on a yes poster).
So is there now room for a conservative, populist, party of some sort. Renua II?

I don't know what orifice this post came out of but if health services have to make resource decisions between an elective procedure like an abortion, and treating a cancer patient, it's not going to be a contest. Some 4000 abortions a year across the country are not going to displace wait lists for urgent care. Come off your terror-donkey - I struggle to call it a high horse.

That is a hell of a good line.

Now we need to sort of how we are going to provide and fund this service.
Let's hope it's not provided in the same fashion as the rest of our health services. E.g. mental health. A&E crisis.
If it is provided to the same standard... might be better off getting it on the cross border treatment scheme.....🙄🙄

I never took the slogan to mean that, and I'm not convinced it was intended that way either. What I took from it is that it's unnecessary and wrong to assume that if a woman is seeking an abortion, that it's for a trivial reason. That's not to say, of course, that no woman will ever do that, but that it's unlikely to be the norm. And I'm no friend of third-wave feminism, but to assume automatically that women can't be trusted, as seems to have been the case with some of the arguments the No side, then that is also a blatantly sexist position to take.

So in a roundabout way, you accept there is not a majority will for abortion for any reason up until 12 weeks? But it's now been slide into our legislation anyway. What was that you were saying about democracy?

The result speaks for itself. Different people had different reasons for voting Yes today. But the majority voted Yes.

If it was a Proportional Representation system, or the Electoral College (vs the popular vote) I could understand why or how you'd question the result. But it's a Yes/No vote. The people have spoken.

Also, you have to remember how well funded the No side were.

Pfft, Mary Lou has positioned herself well as the most prominent female politician in favor of a yes vote, there will be some goodwill votes in her/shinners direction.

This referendum was one thing. Remember everyone, Mary Lou and SF wanted Ireland to follow Greece’s lead when it came to dealing with the financial crisis we’ve just emerged from. Greece are still up to their necks in it!!!!

(Slightly off-topic but very relevant all the same).

just a thought. but it would be funny as hell to reread this thread if the poll was wrong and no vote won it. i keep on hearing how no voters are afraid to say they will vote no for fear of backlash, what if they lied at the exit poll ???

Let it sink in that there is not majority support for abortion for any reason up until 12 weeks? And that you seem to take satisfaction that they trundled something through by forcing people into an all or nothing vote?
