I completely agree. Violent and abusive porn of women is incredibly, incredibly damaging to the world at large.

What view is a teenage boy going to have of women when he grows up watching that.

What can we do to regulate it?

Pepper spray is a terrible idea. It is routinely used by scumbags before attacking and mugging people as it is.

The vast majority of muggings and assaults happen in the blink of an eye so you have no time to fish it out of your bag or pocket and use it.

If you do take it out in time, it only serves to escalate the situation. You can be damn sure that the same type of person who mugs people won't think twice about hitting you in the back of the head, or producing a knife first.

If you do manage to spray it, you have a very high likelihood of spraying yourself.

I'm not advocating to appease these scumbags, but rarely does adding more weapons to a fight improve the outcome for anyone.

It's almost as if you believe the perpetrator has a greater right to life than the gardaí he was trying to stab.

Threat to life is threat to life, regardless of whether it is one person attacking you or a thousand. If you or the life of another is immediate danger from another person (and being attacked with a knife is immediate danger, believe you me), then you can use lethal force to stop that threat.

I do seriously suggest you look up the video of the 4 Honduran police officers being stabbed multiple times (one of them fatally) while trying to arrest a single knife-wielding assailant if you don't believe the damage a person with a knife can do.

That Garda did the right thing IMV.

There are no guarantees that the murderer would admit to anything is there. NO. So up to DPP/State to prove it and the defence to defend. All at taxpayer expense too. Oh and multiple appeals too. And then maybe a guilty but insane verdict and out in a few years like that fella in Sligo who killed in the hospital grounds.

Anyway I always have a tiny hair spray can in my pocket the size you buy for going through security in airports. I hope I never have to use it but I reckon it might stun an attacker enough for me to get away. And it is not dangerous, just gets in your eyes. If I’m able to use it that is, but it is comforting just the same.

My deepest sympathy to the families involved, yes even the murderers family. It was a shocking thing all round.

With further details emerging, the guy had attempted suicide, blood must have been everywhere and when he reached for something, guards at that stage probably assumed she was still in the vehicle and in clear danger too, he correctly fired, and if "leak "is correct , didn't aim at head but single bullet shot travelled through his raised arm and ended up a fatal head wound. Guard had a split second to react in a very tense, highly emotional and dangerous situation. Made a good judgment call if that was the scenario he was engrossed in.
2 families absolutely distraught and a hard road ahead of them.

RTE 6pm news now reporting Mark Hennessy was driving all around south Co. Dublin around Killiney and the Ballybrack area in the time before the abduction. Was he just looking for a random victim?

I would have thought if there was any truth in that speculation, it would be leaking into the national press by now. The fact that the media are talking of no obvious link between the killer and Jastine (at the moment anyway) makes me suspect it was a random abduction.

Was on RTE 6pm news that he was driving aroudn the Killiney and Dalkey areas seemingly at random in the time leading up to the abduction which adds to that theory.

It's just harrowing to consider that if she did not seek a better life abroad she might still be alive. The Phillipines is a terrible place to live .

I suppose you can't live your life thinking that way, because these things thankfully are such a rare occurrence. I wished this guy had lived to pay for what he did, but as someone said for the sake of his children it might be better he did not.

I've Irish and English relations living in the Philippines and they love it there. Granted some places are safer than others, but sure look at Ireland this week.

I’ve read that it was after the abduction before 7pm - they suspect he was panicking as she was banging on the windows trying to escape. Horrific.

Beggers belief, people attacking the guards over this. How many of the people mouthing off have ever truely been in a life and death situation, the pressure must be so intense, and if course when firearms are involved there is always the possibility for things to not go to plan.

Not fair to blame the Gardai for that, it was the man that put himself in that situation, a situation that had the possibility of him dying.
Im sure the guard involved is horrified at what came to pass.

Its not often that im shocked at what goes on in the world, but this has struck a chord. That poor innocent girl and her devastated family. Living and studying Ireland to better her life, truely horrendous.

I cant help thinking about the mans wife and children. I can only imagine what is going through her mind. Revulsion, anger, panic.

So sad.

Yes they can plan a beautiful funeral she deserves with the extra money at least. I wish we could offer more than money but nothing will bring her back.
