    So?

I developed breast cancer in my 20s. It’s massively hugely unlikely but it happened. And I’m going to die from it. Is my life not important because it’s a rare case? Ditto women with severe pregnancy complications. Are their cases and lives not important because they are few in number?

We give power to politicians over every aspect of our lives - that's the system we have - why not this one?

Why? For many, many it is very important to clarify everything. People have differing comprehension abilities and this is the ideal opportunity to clarify pedantics

Definitely. It was ridiculous. Clap louder to sway the undecided. 🙄

I'm no fan of Mary Lou but she came across well and she won me over when she said it was like a clapogram

Do you understand the restrictions imposed on RTE in chairing the debate?

Equal time would have been given to both sides.

Having watched it so far, do you seriously believe there was the same level of audience opinion given to both sides??

Why did a gp in the audience say it then as one of their main principles? There is waffle ad infinitum in this thread.I'll believe the gp thanks

The GP was wrong. And even if irish doctors did take the hippocratic oath there is no mention of "first do no harm in the hippocratic oath".

It’s harder though to ignore two other solecisms – (a) the the phrase “first do no harm” appears nowhere in the Hippocratic Oath and (b) Irish doctors do not take the Oath.
The words “first do no harm” are not to be found in the Oath, except in the most cavalier of translations. Indeed the fact that the words are so often rendered in Latin – primum non nocere – should surely furnish a hint that they did not feature in the original (Greek) oath.

Dr Boylan needs to go to the burns unit at St Vincent for emergency treatment. Roasted by the lawyer I fear.

    I am definitely registered

You mightnt necessarily get one. Out of 3 odd million, some go AWOL. Bring ID and you will be permitted to vote.

BTW, everyone should bring photo ID. The check rate will be 1 voter in 4

very funny the No side hissing when Miss IONA 92 is called a liar and yet not a peep when that tool mattie mcgrath shouts LIES, LIES LIES!!

also the young no doctor says, I wont refer" so he'll refuse?? refuse the woman??then quotes two medical ethical no intentional harm rules and glosses over a hippocratic oath of any sort.

the psycho bunny boiler eyes on that IONA clause , if some scrote raped her in the morning, bull **** would she carry to term, lies!!!!

The only thing I;d like to peel and then re-peel would be claire byrnes clobber..jasus she's a cracker...

As always, the more stupid someone is, the more likely they are to believe that the noisiest side 'won'.

This was so unbalanced towards the no side.

I counted 4 no people in a row speaking ridiculous, if was based on a clap o meter no side will win my a landslide.

I wish I hadn’t watched it. So frustrating. Just lies and mistruths all over.
    Absolutely shameful, biased debate.

Found the hooping and hollering from the crowd really distasteful. That horrible Ghoul from the Iona institute really playing to their mob.

I'd say it was close enough.

It was harder, I assume, to guage which audience member was Yes or No. Producers in her ear would have told Claire which panel member to hit to ensure the overall Yes/No speaking time would have been maintained.

Overall it seemed to me that both sides got equal time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,962 ✭✭✭✭dark crystal

That was a scandalous 'debate'. I don't think many undecided voters would have erred towards the Yes side after that.

Indeed, the Hippocratic oath which doctors no longer take forbids abortion. It is often said that hard cases make for bad law, something which should be carefully kept in mind by our politicians.

Dr Kevin McCarroll is a Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine, St James’s Hospital, Dublin.

From what research indicates, he's pro-life too.

Just missed Claire Byrne, and I see people here complaining about it being one sided and biased etc.
What I wanna know though is it still worth the watch when its up on RTE player?

Mary Lou kept the YES side in it.

Boylan to be dropped for the next game.
