I developed breast cancer in my 20s. It’s massively hugely unlikely but it happened. And I’m going to die from it. Is my life not important because it’s a rare case? Ditto women with severe pregnancy complications. Are their cases and lives not important because they are few in number?

The GP was wrong. And even if irish doctors did take the hippocratic oath there is no mention of "first do no harm in the hippocratic oath".

It’s harder though to ignore two other solecisms – (a) the the phrase “first do no harm” appears nowhere in the Hippocratic Oath and (b) Irish doctors do not take the Oath.
The words “first do no harm” are not to be found in the Oath, except in the most cavalier of translations. Indeed the fact that the words are so often rendered in Latin – primum non nocere – should surely furnish a hint that they did not feature in the original (Greek) oath.

BTW, everyone should bring photo ID. The check rate will be 1 voter in 4

I'd say it was close enough.

It was harder, I assume, to guage which audience member was Yes or No. Producers in her ear would have told Claire which panel member to hit to ensure the overall Yes/No speaking time would have been maintained.

Overall it seemed to me that both sides got equal time.

That was a scandalous 'debate'. I don't think many undecided voters would have erred towards the Yes side after that.

Indeed, the Hippocratic oath which doctors no longer take forbids abortion. It is often said that hard cases make for bad law, something which should be carefully kept in mind by our politicians.

Dr Kevin McCarroll is a Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine, St James’s Hospital, Dublin.

From what research indicates, he's pro-life too.
