Ordered Friday and delivered today, more expensive as 250 + 6.50 but needed it quickly for a staff member that we are seeing an iphone or networks issues with, of course each blames the other. Black 64GB version BTW.

As an android noob should I stick with what it comes with or upgrade / change to OS for a better user experience?

It comes with stock android, so I'm not sure you'll see much advantage in changing the OS. I would definitely stick with it as is.

I have noticed my battery is draining quite a bit faster since the update last week. Not enough to cause problems, but now it needs a charge every night whereas before I would get 2 days out of it. Main culprit seems to be google play services at 25%....anyone else having issues?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭traco

Well its unboxed powered up and updated.

Initial impressions, nice and clean OS, will take a bit of getting used to but nowhere near as bad as I had thought. Very logical really.

It did 2 or 3 updates I think and they went fine, no issues on two WiFi connections. Seems fast, screen and camera appear excellent. That’s comparing side by side with my own iPhone 7+.

Only gripe and it’s not a gripe really. I think it needs a case, I find it slippy and would be terrified of dropping it but my 7 is probably the same without us case.

So for I’m impressed, if it continues to perform as well on the GSM network and email, apps etc all work then to be honest I might be converting myself.

Accidentally put the sim ejector tool into the secondary microphone hole. Now when calling people everyone can hear background noise. Anyone any ideas how I might be able to fix this? Would I be able to do it myself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭paddy19

Unfortunately you have probably damaged the diaphragm in the microphone.

Repairing a mobile is a lot easier than you would expect.

With a bit of care and patience it is not beyond the ability of most people.

There are two mics on this phone, one at the top and the other at the bottom.

I'm assuming its the one at the bottom.

Check out the tear down video on youtube.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtRg-to45LE

Removing the two boards starts at 3.37.

Good old Xiaomi have made it easier by splitting the electronics on to 3 Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).

The USB/MIC board seems to be available on ebay for €20 from Spain including postage.

You will also need a Torx screwdriver looks like a T2 to me.

However a repair will probably invalidate your warranty but any repair will probably invalidate it anyhow unless it is done in an authorised repair centre.
The only authorised repair centre on the Mi.com site is in Singapore.

Let us know how you get on.

    :o:o:o:o:o:o:o

All that fancy advise applies to the primary mic.

You asked about the Secondary mic!

One option might to root the A1 and edit the file to turn off the secondary mic.

    Root:

    Turn off noise cancellation.

    Apologies for the confusion!

Thanks for your comprehensive advice Paddy! I'll try my hand at that over the weekend and see how I get on! If that doesn't work I might try a self repair :)

Can anyone confirm this phone has a compass. For example, if I'm in Google maps will it show me the direction I'm pointing. Use maps a lot, so this feature is essential for me. Mightn't actually be a compass, so whatever it is, I need it. Thanks

Yeah. It has GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope etc. I have used maps and VR headset with no issues.

    Where did it ship from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 614 ✭✭✭djsim101

Hi guys, have this phone now for a while and loving it. So much so, I have recommended my 2 friends to get them. However one of my friends has an issue with their car Bluetooth. Playing music , making a call, the quality is terrible. Keeps getting distorted, mono like sounding as well. I tried my phone in the same car and same problems. Other brand phones have no issues.
    Any ideas?

They seem to be very good for camera equipment but there were a few lads on the boards e global thread that had problems with phone orders a couple of months back

Your DHL tracking should show what countries it’s travelling through to get to Ireland.
I’m interested to know if it’s EU stocked or a grey import from Hong Kong which will be liable for import duty.

I use it with a Roidmi Bluetooth adapter, music only, with no issues. That's Bluetooth to FM.

So if it comes from Hong Kong how much duty is it liable for?

Anybody buy the Mi A1 from Amazon.es ? I ordered mine on the 4th and it hasn't even shipped yet. It was (and still is in stock) when I ordered it.

You dont pay duty, they ship to the UK first then to Ireland so as far as Irish customs are concerned the package is coming from UK

Would you recommend updating to Android Oreo on the mi a1? Does it have any bugs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭paddy19

I had a problem with Bluetooth and my Polar heart rate monitor.
It was fine on Nougat but would not work on Oreo.

Found this link which refers to Bluetooth car issues.
It seems there are 3 versions of Bluetooth available on the Mi A1.

    AVRCP 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6.

1.4 would not work for me but 1.5 was fine.

    https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ-Premium/After-Oreo-update-cant-get-bluetooth-media-working-in-my-Mini/td-p/1273218#gref

    Try this workaround:

Unpair both devices from each other.
Go to Settings -> System -> About phone -> tap multiple times on "Build number" until you enable "Developer options"
Go back to Settings -> System -> Developer options -> Networking -> Bluetooth AVRCP Version -> Choose AVRCP 1.4 or 1.5
    Restart your phone
    Pair devices and test.

Amazon Spain seems to be a bit on the slow side even where items are in stock.

Ordered on the the 5th. Got UPS # on the 8th but still not received in UPS facility.

    Predicting delivery on Tuesday.

8 days for in stock item seems way below Amazons usual standard.

Works well, couple of issues, all easily fixed.

    1. Battery life definitely shorter. Turning on "Data Saver" definitely helps.
Not sure if its back to Nougat level, hard to be sure without measurements.

    2. Bluetooth not working with some devices. Change to AVRCP 1.5 fixed this.

    3. My favorite anti-tracking, ad-blocking, anti-phishing browser Ghostery doesn't work. Went over to its sister application Cliqz which works fine.

Other than these niggles worked fine for me.
