In the current circumstances Marsh would be a good 10 there’s no doubt. But he’d be 27 next year so it’s unlikely he’ll develop into a European cup caliber player. Never mind the fact Ulster having an open 10 spot could be useful for Ireland developing a potential international 10 (as we saw with Cooney at 9).

I know former Leinster guys are talking up Marsh but he’s the best option for Leinster to leave. It would undoubtedly be better for Ulster and Ireland if a Byrne or Carberry moved north.

Whoever they bring in they needs to be European Cup level to either be a clear starter or to develop McPhillips (We don’t know how good he actually is yet). Someone NIQ like Gopperth was to Madigan if McPhillips looks decent or someone like Byrne on the brink of an Ireland cap to strengthen the national team if McPhillips looks like he won’t cut it at the highest level.

I can't help but think we missed a trick not signing Duncan Casey tbh.

He's only in France until the summer so as it stands he is available.

no we didn't, Casey was 4th/5th choice hooker at Munster.

To paraphrase awec, Casey would be as much use to Leinster as Cathal Marsh would be to Ulster, he's squad filler.

Ulster need Ross Byrne, Joey Carbery or they need someone from abroad. And I can't see either of those lads wanting to leave Leinster so they need to go shopping.

I see The Hask is leaving Wasps at the end of the season.

Would you take him for a couple of years? Not that I think he'd ever come to Ulster. If he was a year or two younger maybe.

Could they even afford him? Also is there not bigger needs(re positions) for Ulster?

Would definitely improve the Ulster squad.

Agreed, but is there not other areas in greater need of improvement?

This is like suggesting the solution to Leinster's problem at hooker is they should sign John Andrew.

Leinster's issues at hooker are not in the same galaxy of severity as Ulster's issues at outhalf.

Leinster have a problem coming down the line and are working on a succession plan with a 26 year old option already having 6 Irish caps and a number of ECC starts to his name.

Ulster are completely up sh*t creek at outhalf relatively. If Leinster didn't have Cronin or Strauss on the books, had Tracy unavailable for whatever reason and were looking at Bryan Byrne and Ronan Kelleher for next season then it would almost be similar.

I'd say John Andrew would be looking moderately attractive as a bench option at that point.

    I have a one-liner for this

Oh aye, I was just thinking aloud really.

Out half and at least one outside back are both required.

Plus with the signing of Murphy, the return of Coetzee, the continued development of Timoney and hopefully the emergence of Matt Dalton (although he may be a lock long term) we may not be too badly off in the back row next season.

Maybe The Hask can play FB?!

He probably doesn't even care about the Jackson / Olding thing - just wanted that banner at the top of the forum :D

So, if he goes immediately, what will Ulster do in the short term?

"Head Coach, Jono Gibbes, will assume responsibility for all coaching matters and will lead the current coaching team of Dwayne Peel, Aaron Dundon and Niall Malone. A review will be conducted to ascertain if additional coaching expertise is required."

I thought he'd last the season but the Wasps game sealed his fate. There's no coming back from that.

The playing squad should be utterly ashamed of themselves. They are a disgrace.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,710 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Thanks for your efforts Les, shame it didn't work out.

Maybe the wrong man at the wrong time but he made mistakes, costly mistakes, that hopefully he'll learn from so it won't have been for nothing.

Some playing staff should consider themselves very fortunate that they aren't as easy to get rid of. Time for some people to take a very long look at themselves. Hopefully Gibbes can implement some sort of cultural change otherwise this will be for nothing.

The problems aren't solved, but hopefully a step in the right direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,145 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Well it's the right call I guess but the players have absolutely no excuses left now. If they don't shape up in the coming months they can feck off too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Scythica

    No excuses left.

Hope Kiss finds an appointment in a place which doesn't need such radical reforms. think this experience will stand to him long term though

  • Administrators Posts: 55,710 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

    In-the-know on UAFC:

IRFU got involved a month ago, they wanted to get rid of Kiss but were worried Gibbes would leave as he doesn't want to be in charge. Gibbes has been asked to see it out to the end of the year and he'll get a new boss.

So the IRFU are the saviours. All hail the IRFU.
