The difficulty with being a disciplinarian is that you have to have a viable stick to wield. How viable is it to drop players who are under-performing when for many of them, there's no alternative that won't hurt the team as a whole?

And when a player knows that he is essentially undroppable, then there's no incentive for him to improve his attitude or his performances.

Ulster need to move some senior players out the door, and a few others need to be reminded who is in charge, but the squad depth isn't there to make it a viable option.

    International opportunities?

I was a very, very late - and still not entirely convinced - addition to the Kiss Out gang. I didn't want McLaughlin gone. Anscombe had to go before he got Ulster into legal trouble. I was delighted when Kiss came in but he has delivered nothing - we have gone backwards massively. ( It did raise a wry smile when Prawn compared the job Bell had done with Ulster to the job he is doing at Glaws, and then, without batting an eyelid, said Ulster couldn't be compared with Munster or Leinster.)

I don't know how close we are to a restructure. There are noises that it may being the cards. If we could have a coach that knew what the hell he was doing while that restructure was underway, that would be lovely thanks.

A possible name for the future is Willie Anderson, maybe?

Conor O'Shea would top of my list. But I can't see him giving up Italy for Ulster.

Hasn't Conor spoken about the long term project and that his in for the long term. Imagine his on a nice pay packet with less stress I'd imagine, than he'd have with Ulster

Wasn't sure which of your posts to reply to, so went with the last one. ;)

Glad you were amused. But at least with Ulster and Glaws, there's a common denominator. There's nothing particularly common to the Munster and Leinster comparison with Ulster.

But I did hear this same extolling of Bell's virtues before. He may be just as good now as he was then, but the laws have changed to benefit attacking teams at the breakdown and that's seen an increase in tries conceded across the board. I think Leinster have conceded as many tries this season so far as they did for the entire season a couple of seasons ago.

I don't think Willie would be interested tbh. He's early 60's and the game has probably passed him by a bit now. Mind you he's the kind of hard nut that would go some way to knocking a few heads together.

Ah come on. Glaws are an English club playing in their domestic league. But yeah, it makes more sense to compare them to Ulster than to compare Munster or Leinster to Ulster. (Which you have just done, by the way, in bringing Leinster into the defence discussion.)

Well, he might not be able for it. But it looks like he really has the A team forwards motoring.

I think you are failing to see the point. Perhaps deliberately?

    To quote Jaco:
Kiss's arrival and the changes he introduced led to 2016 /17 - 47 tries against. In 2017 / 2018 in only 13 games Ulster have conceded 43 already with a few 'difficult' games still to come. Glasgow have conceded 18, Leinster 24, Munster 26 and Scarlets 21 in the same 13 game period.

    Gents, I'm at a loss.

Around 10-15 years ago we used to play a sort of wild rover/ghost riders in the sky mashup song pre match. Anyone know where is or who sang the version of this song??

Well the song is by Johnny Cash but I'm assuming that's not what you're asking.

I have a vague memory that there was an explanation for why it was sung on the BBC's 10 year anniversary programme of the European Cup win. You might find it on Youtube somewhere.

Good times though, it's a shame it didn't stick.

RTE have reported that a Jury has been sworn in for the Jackson, Olding etc Trial.

They expect a 5 week trial.

My searchings so far has told me that it was sung by the 1999 team. Can't find it for love nor money beyond that though

The supporters definitely sang it as well. Not sure which came first

UAFC basically wants rid of anyone who is in any way affiliated with the IRFU.

Cave turned down an IRFU call up so UAFC loves him. Though in fairness Cave is probably our best 13 and his omission from the team for so long is a bit odd.

He was awful against Leinster, but not the only one.

I assume that isn’t a rugby driven position on UAFC then?

#OnThisDay in 1999 @UlsterRugby became the fourth winners of the European Cup. Were you there?

We can't be far off having players in the senior squad who weren't born yet for that win.

I'd go as far as saying that team at their current age would beat the present day one!!

Matthew Dalton has played for Ulster this season and was about 10 weeks old at the time so it's not far off at all.

So I see Arnold is training with the Ireland squad. So that's both Farrell and Arnold involved with Ireland in one way or another. Meanwhile we have Louis Ludik (great servant that he is) playing 13...funny how things turn out!

I don't see much hope. The factual elements of this case are probably enough to ensure that guilty or not guilty they are gone.

The WhatsApp messages alone are, I think, probably enough for them to get the boot, no matter how the rest goes.

There doesn't seem to be much more than he said she said from the opening day

I think the point is what he said isn't particularly flattering to him - and I'm referring to continued employment with Ulster and Ireland here, not about the legal decisions.

And it's just scheduled for 5 weeks, they don't necessarily have to use all of that time.
