    Scanned today, 32 ewes.
1 empty, 4 singles, 20 twins and 7 triplets, giving 2.03. Happy out!

Had one which scanned a single and what he called a mummified lamb.
He marked her separately, when she lambs will I have to take the mummified lamb from her? Tks, Mac

Some lamb on their own, some don't,
They abort them too, there doesn't seem to be any pattern.
I always use gloves, don't care what you meet then.

Scanned yesterday and got a scan of 1.8 lambs to the ewe. Had 53 triplets which is a lot higher than we usually get

Scanning numbers seem very high this year. All the minerals ye gave them for the sheep welfare scheme seem to be paying off.

Yes scanned 1.95 here including empties today. Possibly prefer 1.8 but sure good preparation and hopefully won't lose too many.

    5 Empty
    19 singles
    36 twins
    10 triplets

    1.73

Most of the singles are ewe lambs so happy enough with that.

An aside from this, what do ye lads normally do with your empties. I have a ram lamb still in with them.

We slaughter them, but our rams would be taken away six weeks before scanning.
If they're scanned empty then they are empty whereas your empties could've gone in lamb in the last month.
If they were mine I'd slaughter them, I hate dragged out lambing

My honest opinion is to just flog them at the next available opportunity, there is enough to worry about and feed at this time of year without carrying empty ewes over for a year.

Scanned last Thursday the last lot of 26
    10 singles
    1 triplet
    11 doubles
    4 empty’s
Some of these were late lambed ewe lambs and the 4 empty’s were ones that kept repeating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,067 ✭✭✭Dickie10

i have 9 empties out of 62 scanned any ideas for the repeats? ewes from 7 years old to 2 years old across different breeds

i ran the ewes in three groups this year to suit different rams one group of 42 ewes had a mature proven ram and able ram lamb with them but I have ended up with 15 singles (36%) the other two groups had 20% and 22% singles

Any ideas what caused the large number of singles

You're going to have singles, and triplets... ewes too fat and too thin can lead to singles, we'd always be aware of getting condition right, even giving meal to thin ones pre mating and making sure there's enough grass at mating.
Even after all of that you can end up with too many singles

Ewes were in perfect condition as I sold a good few ewes before mating so the batch I kept were picked based on condition.

My flock have been very consistent over the last 5/6 years and I would generally have about twice as many twins as singles and triplets and singles would be pretty even.

Could a sub fertile ram produce singles, was talking to a vet and he reckons sub-fertile ram would just increase the barren rate not the singles

    Different feeding or luck

    Different feeding or luck

They were on an out farm alright but the grass was as good as other groups...probably just luck!.......im trying to remove blame from myself !!!

You're dealing with nature, you just get all your ducks in a row and hope for the best.
Excessive barren ewes would be more symptomatic of sub fertile rams than singles.
The scan here was 1.75 which I was delighted with because they were all ewes that either were too old or not in good enough condition for my clearance sale in September.
In the 25 ewe lambs there was
    11 doubles
    11 singles
    3 empty
Which is nearly 1.3, happy enough too

Don't think the ram has anything to do with lambin %.. ewe releases the eggs. Ram problems = barren rate issue.

36% sounds a lot higher than 20% and 22% but if all your groups were a similar size 1 or 2 ewes more in the other groups having singles and 2 or 3 in the singles group having twins and the differences aren't so big.

Whats the oldest lads tend to keep ewes? Or do you just cull as necessary regardless of the age?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭jmrc

here its done on merit, but find it hard to keep old ewes.
any trouble is culled, and their progeny are not kept for replacement either.
life is too short for problems...
