Scanner men are so long at it they are good, the only problem is if the ewes are gone to far in lamb. Last year our man had one ewe slipping one lamb and one good lamb and she lambed a healthy lamb and a mummified lamb.

I scanned later than usual last year between 1 thing and another and he got 2 wrong outta over 70 scanned them for doubles but both has triplets which is the problem scanning late he said before he left a few doubles could have triplets.

Yeah, I'm after getting caught this year too, scanned today a week late so few of the earliest ones could have more than marked for. Scanned well anyway bar 5 empties - all hoggetts.

    5 Triplets
    9 Singles
    54 Doubles
    5 Empty

Think its about 1.8 lambs/ewe put to ram

Good going there. When were the rams left off with the ewes?

I always reckon that 1.8 is a grand scan.......few triplets and plenty of chances of adoptions

Its a good scan alright, new ram this year so was a bit apprehensive. Bought 26 hoggetts in August, was really disappointed 5 were empty.Expected a couple alright because they were still tipping. Think after empties have an average of 1.93 scan, more than good enough for me if they all stay alive

Hate emptys with a passion especially on hoggets . youve a lot of couples which is brilliant though. We would often get a lot of triplets and singles rather than couples.

Don’t know how true it is but anecdotal reports here in NW that scan avgs are down, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s to do with fact there was v little sunshine here all year, something all the vitamin drenched in the world cannot replace.

I think I made the remark here months ago that ewes standing under the ditches in the rain every day during mating wasn't going to good lamb crops, ours were looking drowned for most of mating

scanned 62 ewes this morning, bit disapointed to have 9 dry out of 62 but pretty sure some are late in lamb id say i will end up with only 2-3 dry. my scanning was 1.85 but without the barren ewes it was 2.1.

    36 doubles
    2 singles
    13 triplets
    1 quad and
    9 dry

Ewes scanned at 1.9 here this week. Less than 50% of ewe lambs in lamb. Can only assume all that rain didn’t help. As wrangler said on here, being backed up against a ditch for shelter when tis lashing rain doesn’t do much for breeding.

Happy enough overall with 1.9 though. Just need to figure out housing plans now!

Mated mine this year in October instead of the usual November, there wasn't a lot of activity.......be scanning in the next fortnight so that'll tell the tale.

Would people here be confident of ewe lambs being in lamb after being tipped on their first cycle and not showing heat again?
With cattle I'd be 99% sure that they are in calf if they don't repeat.

I wouldn't know about ewe lambs but 90%+ of adult ewes go inlamb on the first service.
Not many would be watching them as close as cattle, I always use plenty of rams and very seldom use raddles so wouldn't be watching for repeats

Ewes scanned at 1.9 here this week. Less than 50% of ewe lambs in lamb!

Were they run with ram separate to rest of flock ?

No, haven’t enough numbers to keep ewe lambs separate yet. That’s two years now we haven’t managed to get more than 50% in lamb, so need to look at how we’re doing things.

Ya, that might be your answer. I put 30 ewe lambs and 20 of my best ewes with a easy lambing maternal ram this year (separate to the rest of flock) that got the terminal rams. After two weeks all 20 ewes Plus 2 ewe lambs were tipped. Removed the ewes and just left the ewe lambs with him. Every day without fail 2-3 ewe lambs tipped, until all done. Changed the raffle and don't see any repeats. Hopefully their all in lamb now. All mar-April born ewe lambs from this year.

Are people noticing an increase/decrease/no change in scan rates/results this year? Have yet to scan here.

Only going to be farming 10acres this year, we've 80 to scan so hoping to have a few barren. 8 ewes to the acre might be abit exciting.

Guessing your hoping to get it down to 40 ewes for a nice number for that amount of ground.

Good scan there. Did the ram tip/Mark all the ewe lambs or did you know beforehand that some didn't show a heat?

Cheers. Ye he tipped them all bar a few , some of the well raddled ewe lambs weren't in lamb. I ran the ewes and ewe lambs together and the ewe lambs weren't tipped till the very last ewe was tipped so the rams obviously had far more interest in the ewes.

Found the same with ours this year too so scanning will be interesting

Did you leave the rams with the ewe lambs for a couple of cycles? All mine are raddled, most would have had 2 cycles with the ram so I'd be hoping that they are in lamb. Will have to wait till scanning to know for sure I suppose!

    Scanned 31 ewes here:
    1 empty
    6 singles
    17 twins
    7 triplets

Very happy with that especially if I can get some of the triplets fostered sucessfully
