If you root the 16GB shield you can move the PMS install to external storage which will save all the metadata to your usb stick/external HD.

There's a guide on xda-devs about it which works with the 2017 shield despite it mentioning only the 2015 one.

Then you lose Netflix... I've not rooted mine but I don't run Plex on mine and have added storage

I doubt there are many people with a large Plex server that needs 10GB+ in metadata who would be bothered with netflix on top. I know I'm not.

Even if you do it's worth the sacrifice for such a low powered option to effectively run PMS I think.

Would an SD card formatted as internal storage do the trick here in addition to an external hd ?

    1. No SD slot on 16GB 2017 Shield

    2. Internal storage can be expanded using a USB drive but Plex won't bloody use it anyway!

I've no idea if Plex have any plans to fix this...

Media can be anywhere as you've surmised but Plex will only use the Shield's on-board storage for its *metadata*. Large libraries can fill this up and stop Plex from working. Even expanding internal storage with a USB drive won't work.

It would have to be absolutely massive though.
Also can’t you plug in an sd card and have the shield use that as it treats it as part of the internal storage if you use the option.

Ah no sd on the new version :)
But seriously how much data had the op?
I’ve a tonne of tv shows and hundreds of movies and plex runs perfect.

Blazer, you are guessing here, it is well documented on shield forums and on plex forums that they don't recommend using the 16gb shield for anything other than a very small library.

You are adding speculation to a thread where there are already well informed comments from people close to the issue. If you have a small library going that is great, but stick to the facts.

Just a point that you don't have to use the Shield as a Plex server, you can use it as just a client and use another device as a server.

I use my Mac mini as my Plex server and use the Shoeld as a client.

RaspberryPi, certain NAS, etc. Can also be used as servers.

Yeah, so, my library would be on the larger side... currently have 2 seperate plex servers, one on a synology (9.7gb library) and one on a desktop (14.6gb library) with different content but I'm in the process of moving everything into 1 plex instance. As it stands now the Synology struggles to even load the plex dashboard at times so I really do need something with a bit of power behind it and would rather not use the desktop.

Anyone mount an external USB stick on their box?

Fitted a Sandisk recommended by Nvidia and found since the box can be a bit slow to respond to the control every now and then.

Yeah looking at the issue my library would be small compared to the ones having the issue.
Something I need to be aware of for the future.

Yeah I fitted a Sandisk micro sd card to extend the memory on my Version 1 box and extended the memory worked fine at first then over time i found the box started freezing for a couple of seconds so ended up moving the installed apps back onto the Shield removed the micro sd card and it started to work as normal with no freezing. I was thinking about buying a fast read/write usb 3.0 stick and see if it worked better then the class 10 micro sd card i used, but haven’t got around to it yet.

If it loses another 40, it'll be about what it should be. Really taking the piss with price.

I thought the same till I actually bought one.

This box is a beast and worth every penny.

It replaced my android box, my sat box and my chrome cast.

Oh and it's an awesome games console too :)

    Bollox.

The ability to stream 4K games from my PC makes it worth every penny. Plex etc. Is just icing on the cake.

Nonsense, it's the same hardware as the Nintendo switch. Not in the same category as most android boxes

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the home screen background image on the shield Without rooting it?

Yes, you can just install a different launcher.

    Well that’s just plane greedy
This unit is worth every penny I paid for it and I haven’t even started gaming on it yet, only so many hours in the day
What I’m using this for would cost me a fortune with a contract elsewhere

My brother in law called over to see it having been an android user for the past year and his chin nearly hit the floor when he saw it in action

Treat yourself and you won’t regret it

    The internet isn’t for everyone

If you want a really cheap option, just plug an Xbox 360 controller in.

No idea where the cheapest place is to get the proper game pad, but I imagine there's a lot of shield owners that have one that came with their Shield, and would be happy to sell.

I was looking at buying at Curry's before I cashed out my gift voucher. I thought they only did delivery, so it cost €250 + €5 or so shipping?

They are £159 (€180) on Amazon at the minute with both the remote control and gamepad, but maybe if you have an Amazon Prime (Free Trial) account, it could be cheaper.

Yeah, seems to be. I had not read further down before i posted it back here. It is late ish and has been a long few days :D

Still, €180 is good for it. It is on sale across Europe but after shipping and any other charges, by the time it arrives here it is probably a similar price.
