Shield is the best streaming device Ive used by a mile, more expensive than the rest but completely worth it.

    Apps I use most are:

    STBEMU / Smart IPTV
    PLEX
    Netflix
    Spotify
    BBC Sport
    Ariel Dream
    RetroX for emulation

I find Kodi pretty brutal these days, not worth the grief compared to Plex which is much more reliable with a decent sub.

If anyone who recently bought the Amazon deal doesn't use their game controller and wants to sell it I would happily take a second one, send me a PM.

Plex is media streaming software, you can stream your own local media or 'friends' media if they're willing to share it, the interface is more like Netflix than kodi with content loading immediately.

Nice tips... I'll try RetroX and Ariel Dream. I had been looking for a screensaver app that uses my Google Photos media. It's incredible but there is no native support for Google Photos on Android TV, you have to sideload it and also like that you cant just use the photos as screensaver. Wouldve been nice to have those play while you're listening to Spotify (like on an AppleTV)

All the other apps are top notch and work fab on the Shield. Agree with you on Kodi, stopped using it as it not as smooth an experience as Plex and Smart IPTV. Felt more appropriate on my €30 MX box than on this little jewel

Long live the Shield! Best tech purchase of 2017 hands down

There is a Google Photos app on the ATV Play Store.

It's not a full blown app, but i think it is to use Assistant to play photos of "my dogs" etc.

Not really used it much to be honest, but Aerial Dream is jaw dropping. iFruit won't be happy if they ever find out about it :P

Got my Shield today, this thing is incredible. Coming from a Minix Neo X8-H plus, this is so much better. I'm definitely ditching Kodi for Plex, it's so simple to use.

When watching IPTV or KODI 720P or 1080P, mine keeps refreshing.
I'm using it through wifi, and have 90mbs download speed.

I bought home plugs to use a wired setup, but was only getting 20mbs download speed with the home plugs.

    Any recommendations?

When setting up STBEMU which IPTV provider do you choose?

The provider I pay my subscription for, if you subscribe to one they should provide instructions, I've never used or know of any free IPTV services but most offer free trials.

Just a guess, but do you have to allow apps from unknown sources in the settings?

Do they definitely have the .apk extension? Used to have an issue with the aftv (but haven't experienced same on the shield) whereby Apks downloaded as .txt files and I had to manually rename in Es file explorer....

If you get the ip, open windows explorer.
    \\shield_ip_here\internal

It might prompt you for user/password, and those are provided under storage settings on the shield.

Let me know if that makes sense , could be an easier way, but that's what works for me.

Lemme guess, Windows 10? Newer builds of Windows 10 remove support for [ancient] SMBv1.0 network protocol that the Shield uses. You'll have to install the feature in Windows like this guy. Look for "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

    http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=5d88e738b1278c7aeda5c49153749f01&topic=2536.msg20549#msg20549

Hopefully that'll work or else you'll have to mess with the Registry and/or Group Policies.

By the way, Microsoft removed support for SMBv1.0 due to security issues but installing/enabling it was the only was I could hit up \\SHIELD on my network :(

Yeah thanks for that, went into windows features and all was clicked on...My head is melted...

Try this next so: Lanman Workstation Group Policy setting

There's a related Registry setting to try too:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters]
    "AllowInsecureGuestAuth"=DWORD:1

I've tried all these and I'm not sure which one finally did the trick. Maybe throw in a reboot too.

If you install es file explorer from the play store it has a remote manager option I use to access the shield when needed.

Mine works sometimes, others times it can't access it for some reason. Windows 10. Haven't looked into it too much yet.

I look forward to hearing back. I've seen you spot some other bargains so I'm sure if you have seen it then you have seen it.

I have not got back sooner because i was a bit busy. I found where i was looking in that week.
    Digitec.ch
They do provide shipping here, but only on limited items and there is an expected VAT increase when it gets to Ireland.
There are some mail forwarders that may help (i have not tried them for this site).
The remote only version is €132 (152.78 CHF) before shipping + vat
    https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/nvidia-shield-tv-remote-only-de-fr-it-en-game-consoles-6604685

It seems that the offer is not still available with the controller, or even if it worked out all that great after using Parcl etc. but i think it was €141 (+ Airnshop or Parcl or another Mail forwarder) = €155 iirc.
I have not spent enough time on that site to know more, but i think the promotions are quick, and limited outside Switzerland when they do offer those.
There was definitely also another German store that had it fairly cheap before shipping but i have not looked for them yet, and i know few stores/sites in France have been selling it with both controllers for €150 (after cashback promo) (or €163) over the past week, similar elsewhere.

Any sign of a deal on the pro version? I need one for a very large plex library so the 16gb just wouldn't cut it.

    external drive?

External drive is no good for Plex as Plex only saves metadata to the internal storage.

    That can’t be right.
I’ve my plex mapped to my nas and plex works perfect with the files on it with all the data required.

Media can be anywhere as you've surmised but Plex will only use the Shield's on-board storage for its *metadata*. Large libraries can fill this up and stop Plex from working. Even expanding internal storage with a USB drive won't work.

Exactly this. The metadata from a library as small as a few TB can fill this 16GB and cannot be moved.
