Argentina, though limited, didn't look bad against a powerful England. We will need our main team, i.e Aki and Murray IMO.

Perfect sort of game that marmion or McGrath need to play in. Maybe aki and henshaw in centre would be right there though

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I've read a few comments about Rob Herring being a project player in the last few days.

I don't think this is correct. I'm nearly certain he qualifies through a grandparent. Can anyone confirm this?

He is Irish qualified under the grand parent rule.

He played for emerging Ireland in 2013 and the wolfhounds in 2014 after arriving in 2012.

Kilcoyne, Herring, J Ryan, J Ryan, Henderson, Ruddock, SOB, Stander
Marmion, Carbery, Stockdale, Aki, Henshaw, Conway, Kearney

Tracy, McGrath, Bealham, Dillane, Conan, Cooney, Farrell, Sweetnam

With only three AIs I don't expect massive changes for the Fiji match. I'd go with the same backline to further bed the new faces into the side.

I doubt it would happen but I'd cover 9 and 10 with Cooney as I don't see the value in using Keatley in a game like this.

I'm guessing those in the squad who didn't get into this 23 will be somewhere in the 23 for Fiji. I agree with keeping the backline mostly the same, although I think you could potentially lose R Kearney on this one. I'll be disappointed if McCloskey doesn't get a chance at things anyway, based on his great form this season in a poor Ulster side.

Cooney and Bealham aren't in the squad, doubt they'll be called now

There is probably an argument for starting Luke McGrath as he and Carbery might have some familiarity. He's playing very well too.

I'd also like to see Treadwell start with James Ryan in the second row.

God knows I haven't been Rob Kearney's biggest fan in recent years, but it's just nonsense to be talking him down after yesterday. If you look at the things he did well, he basically knew where SA were going to kick the ball before they even kicked it. He had time for a cup of tea and a sandwich a few times because his positioning is so good. This frees Stockdale, in the biggest game of his career to date, to just be able to 100% focus on his own job rather than worrying about whether the backfield is covered or if he's going to have to move into the middle of the pitch to clean up the ball. Instead he can focus on his kick chase, focus on his support lines, etc. On top of that as a senior player Kearney was giving Stockdale a pat on the head for just about every good moment he had in the match - that's leadership.

No he's not Israel Folau or Damien McKenzie. WE ****ING KNOW THAT.

I'd like to see a back three of Conway, Stockdale and Byrne for Fiji. Perhaps we're more likely to see Sweetnam with Byrne on the bench. Or Stockdale not playing. McCloskey and Farrell in the midfield. Cadbury has to start. Murray won't be played so take your pick from Marmion and McGrath. Probably Marmion.

The bench front row has to start. Maybe McGrath will come back. Tracy and Porter to bench. Ryan alongside Treadwell/Dillane. Ruddock, Leavy, Conan. With TOD injured, I'd like too see Murphy brought in too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 14 changes in the starting XV for next week. I guess either Conway or Rob Kearney has to start, unless Sweetnam is going to play FB.

    So maybe

    McGrath Herring Ryan
    Dillane Ryan
    Ruddock Conan Leavy
    Marmion Carbery
    Byrne McCloskey Farrell Sweetnam
    Conway

Injury doubts over Leavy and Conan though

I heard somewhere that Schmidt said he wouldn't be calling up injury replacements, not sure was that just for earls or was Tod included? Don't think there's a particular need to call anyone else up really unless leavy isn't fit

So he misjudged a bouncing rugby ball. Henshaw dropped a pass under zero pressure. Others had knock ons etc. Your micro analysis is ridiculous. Nobody has said he was brilliant or played a perfect game. But he did exactly what the coach expected of him. He helped set a platform off which others shone. Job done

He's on his way out the door. Unceremoniously too I might add with Carbery there and there about. Pompous pomp popped

We generally approach the autumn series the same way in that we have two full blooded tests against tier 1 opposition and then we play a minow. Last year we saw wholesale changes against Canada with a handful of first choice last left in. We had an extra game to navigate last year which impact this but I'd anticipate we'll see more of the same this year.

The team I'd imagine will line out will look something like this:

    McGrath Herring Ryan
    Ryan Toner
    POM Ruddock Conan
    Marmion Carbery
    McCloskey Aki
    Stockdale Kearney Conway

For the final test I reckon will factor in whatever injury worries there are and go with an 80 : 20 selection of first choice and developing.

I think Chris Farrell may bench next week but I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't involved much at all. He's there for the needs of the squad but I don't think he is going to see much game time invested in him.

I think Porter will bench next week along with Treadwell and a few others.

I don't know where Sweetnam stands in the grand scheme of things. He went well when he came on last night so may get a start at the weekend.

I also think the captaincy against Fiji is going to be between Ruddock and POM and I think that decision will be indicative of who may be in the running for next Ireland captain.

Have you ever met Kearney? I have and he's incredibly personable and shows no obvious ego. I also know from those who've played with him that he is considered an absolute gent of the highest order.

I've no idea why he get's this sort of vitriol. It's baffling for someone who has been a great servant of Irish rugby and is a very decent bloke.

I've a sneaking suspicion we will see Conway at fullback for this one. Against tier ii opposition we would not need Kearney's experience and leadership. Conway may be seen as a protection number 23 for the six nations when Earls comes back.

You may well be correct. I included Kearney for two reasons, bit of control in an extremely unfamiliar backline and he actually needs to game time to be honest.

I could well see Jordi Murphy coming in to the frame also.

South African were brutal today - what were those 2 south africans doing when sweetman was on the ground after collecting from carbery. They looked like 2 men who had never played rugby in their lives- they actually just stood there and did nothing. Bizarre.

Ireland are 4th in the world, that number is realistic, the real test is this 6 nations and can joe Schmidt show he has closed the gap on England.

I was curious about this myself. I presume they know the rules better than we do.

Impossible to predict as there could be any number of changes.

    Maybe something like...

    Kilcoyne
Best (the skipper rarely gets rested in these games)
    Ryan
    Henderson
    Ryan
    Ruddock
    Who are the other 7s?
    Conan
    Marmion
    Carbery
    Stockdale
    McCloskey
    Farrell
    Sweetman
    Conway

That said there is merit in giving Henshaw and Aki another game together and it's not as if Henshaw has that many games under his belt this season anyway. I'd like to see Ryan and Henderson in the row together as ot does appear to be the future.

O hall Oran is a real man. Not interested in publicity and pouting at the cameras. I haven't met him in real life I don't need to suffice it to say he thinks he is better than he is. He's never truly been tested at international level and just sticks to the basics

Quiz Q : who and when was the last genuine Connacht player (and lets not get into it, but no, Henchie doesnt count) to be a regular starter for Ireland ?

You realise you are worse than the other guy right
When you start with but this guy who was formed and a starter for Ireland in Connacht doesnt count youve already lost

This is the example people are talking about. South Africa kicked a good bit in the first half, got absolutely nothing from it and tried to play more direct in the second half.

Kearney's clearance kick from the Irish try line to the mid field mark was worth the price of admission.

    What an as$hole.

Its the fact he has a tan and is good looking. I think hes coming to a end at international level but i've met him and hes pretty sound. Heaslip gets the same sort of abuse and he was pretty sound aswell

He was indeed in his pomp yesterday. A masterclass of assured full-back competence.
