They've changed their rules as part of their "Be slightly less dickish" campaign so you're allowed a second cabin bag as long as it will fit under the seat. I'd say you should be fine.

Anyone watching Wimbledon? Nadal against Muller (who I've never heard of) at 12-11 in the 5th with some good tennis on show.

  • Dunno if we've any space nerds on here but in a couple of hours the Juno craft is going to fly roughly 9,000km above the Great Red Spot on Jupiter, which obviously is the closest look anything will have ever had at it. Can't wait to see the photos.

It's going so fast at the moment that it would orbit the Earth in about 12 minutes.

Don't normally watch tennis but that was great, yer man had nerves of steel, never looked like losing once it went to a fifth set. You could almost say... Muller Ice...

I didn't see the first two sets. Thought Nadal was easily the better player in the 3rd and 4th and figured it was a matter of procession in the 5th. Muller always looked the more likely to win in the 5th though - was impressive stuff. Tennis seems like such a difficult sport when it goes on like that in a 5th set.

    I'm ignoring the pun...

Yeah, same, missed the first couple and Nadal was strong in the next 2, but Muller never looked like dropping serve in the last and several times had chances to break for the match. Think Nadal just ran out of steam, his footwork and speed was gone towards the end.

Interesting, did your no-claims change? The Setanta ruling should take a little bit off the book, but otherwise unless you moved house, changed car, added a driver or started supporting Leinster there is no reason for an improvement in your underwriting.

Nope, nothing changed. I took out home contents insurance with the same company (liberty) but thought that might bring it down by ~10% at best.

I dunno, but it was enough for his insurance company to re-classify him as a female driver so I'd say he must be going to all of them

Any mortgage nerds on here? Is it worth going through a broker when both of us are in permanent employment and unlikely to face any problems getting a mortgage?

I'm not a mortgage nerd but have been thinking about this myself recently. A friend bought a house via a broker not so long ago and found the main benefit to them was the broker was able to get the bank to break those central bank lending rules on amount being loaned. Which was something he didn't need regardless. Other than that he said didn't really add much value.

I haven't been able to attend one yet but these guys run free first time buyers workshops which are apparently very good. Now they are a solicitors firm and are obviously hoping you'll use them as your solicitor but hey, it's free.

Edit - Sorry that's a really old link, didn't spot it was July 2016. They definitely had a workshop last week though so they're still on.

Trying to get the deposit together is absolute torture. My better half has had to move out of Dublin recently for work so I am seriously considering moving back home for that period to save. Desperate stuff.

Not particularly. You can identify the cheapest rates fairly easily nowadays online. A broker can take some of the hassle out of the situation but isn't going to pull a rabbit out of a hat and get you a cheaper deal unless you're not bothered looking yourself. If you know how much you need and are confident you'll have no real difficulty securing the offer, I'd go it alone.

I spoke with one broker when we were looking just for clarity and he was pretty blunt admitting there was no point going through him aside from having one point of contact to speak with and not having to deal directly with banks. It was fairly obvious which lender was the best at the time.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,090 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Yea we have already made an appointment with a broker (he was recommended by a few friends of ours) and may just go ahead with him anyway. Worst comes to the worst we apply through him and see what we get and compare it with the other banks ourselves.

We won't need any rules bent or broken and neither of us are self employed, our application is probably a text book case.

    All very confusing.
