To be honest, I took her snaps with a pinch of salt. I agree she is one big walking advertisement. I think she spoke about it in order to get her spoke in before people turned on her. Like that Selected shop, Bourjois make up and Rimmel make up. In the past she has been paid to advertise them and had used the #ad, and she often still talks about their products without the #ad. So it can be confusing. Its like, if she got a once off payment from the company to promote their lipstick, why would she then constantly plug their foundation. Surely its to keep in with the company so she can get more paid gigs?

Also she is a walking advert for River Island and Zara, she must be getting something for wearing them?

If you look at pippas outfits with a link on her page to buy them of river island etc it does state on in small print she will get a cut from the sale

I agree that I don't think she has been 100% transparent in the past but I think it's good to take the issue on head first. There is a lot more scrutiny now of that type of thing than in the past, so maybe there was a sense that everyone was at it so was ok. It remains to be seen if she will be true to what she said.

As for Rimmel/bourjoir etc. I guess it is possible that she genuinely likes the few items she shows when doing her make up. Do you for always and ever have to #ad even if the collaboration has ended? It's hard to know her motives.

On the other hand I don't think Zara collaborates with bloggers (to my knowledge) so I don't think that's why she wears that band and as for RI affiliate links are not the same as #ad. And although it's best practice to disclose affiliate links, you can't link anything on Snapchat. Though if she is sending people to her blog to the links via Snapchat then she should be disclosing they are affiliated imo. At least she handled it maturely and didn't act like it is a personal attack to question if something is an ad.

I don't think Grace is using #ad or #spon as much as she is meant to.
And I agree with others; she Snaps her baby way too much.
She doesn't take feedback or criticism from anyone.

If I was her and someone told me I was Snapping my child a bit too much and if I'd gotten complaints from several people, I would seriously have to take it into consideration. Otherwise you're just going to annoy people.

Sometimes I like her Snaps but when she constantly Snaps her child and Chris (and half the time it looks like he just wants quality time with her and Sienna) I think "Can you not have family time? Do you have to Snap SO much?"

mod bigpink, if you fail to keep to the topic and follow the charter, I will ban you from this thread. Saying a blogger is fake is not in the spirit of the thread or the forum.

I think any sort of criticism of their content is seen as hate and usually you get the "if you don't like, unfollow" which is fair enough to an extent I suppose but sometimes you can like the majority of their content, also why should you and why should they be immune to any criticism when they're making their living this way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭guideanna

I agree. I follow lots of the bloggers on snap chat and mostly like the content BUT when they go on and on about products/shops and expect ppl not to notice it p*sses me off!

I'm not trying to pick on one particular blogger here (coz there's a good few of them at it) BUT when you start pulling the BS about mental health and telling people to be mindful of what they're saying about you and crying to the camera it actually makes me laugh!

There you are very selectively failing to disclose(at the time) the fact u got/received/blagged a camera lens/new buggy etc etc and harping on and on and on and on about them in snaps….people are not stupid!
Just be HONEST and then you won't be getting people writing this s*it about you. And when i say be honest i don't mean just saying your being honest but actually doing it.

Am sick to the back teeth of hearing about Meaghers pharmacy. Absolutely cringe the amount of bloggers they pay to promote their pharmacy.

I think for some brands now, the main way they are being advised/thinking to promote is through social media and by extension social media personalities. One of the candidates who got to the final of the UK Apprentice last year even had this as her whole business model!

Whether this works or not, I wonder it is the fact that there are no proper guidelines being given by the businesses to these social media people to use #ad, #spon, etc or else are the guidelines not being taken notice of and/or not enforced. There needs to be more work put in and more clarity from both the business and person promoting if this whole issue is to become less of an issue.

I'd be interested to know how many times a day you can run the same ad on all social media platforms. With tv there are certain regulations whereby you can only show a certain ad so many times a day, and certainly not multiple times between the hour. I know social media is different as it is totally up to the user who to follow and in that respect they have total control of who they are watching- but we don't have control over the content and the frequency which we are seeing it. On Saturday I saw 5 ads promoting Meaghers and Benefit, all within the same two hour period. That is just too much. Surely this isn't good practice?

    Ye it's counter productive.
I might see one blogger snap about a product they "got" from a brand and i'd watch to see what it's like etc, then later that day or days after i see snaps from other bloggers talking about exact same items/products.
And also pointing out that mostly (by who i follow anyway) it's rarely mentioned that these were all received as freebies so your led to believe that they liked the product so much they went out and purchased it.
Drives me mad! Just let us know you got the stuff free like.

I also notice these bloggers get deliveries from companies (Cadbury for example) and it'll be a few of them who'll all be sent the same stuff and although they are by no means obliged to, I'd really like to see them do a giveaway to their followers or even donate it to a hospital or something.

These bloggers get freebies quite regularly and I think it'd be a nice touch.

Especially when one particular Snapchatter gets makeup hampers for free when he doesn't wear makeup.

It'd be nice to see them do something other than give it all to their friends or family. Tbf he Makeup fairy actually does regular giveaways of the stuff she doesn't use.

Brands/stores I'll never buy from coz of their over saturation on Snap:

Note makeup, Bella Baby (ARGHHH), Bellmianta tan, Bperfect make up/tan, Benefit, Caris closet, Starla Dresses, MEAGHERS PHARMACY! I'm sure there's loads more I cant think of, but they come across so desperate, if I'm hearing your brand name more than once every 3 days, that's too much for me. Bloggers need to stop ramming the same rubbish down our throats, week in week out.

I agree that over promotion and saturation of a particular brand or product across social media can be counter-productive. I've found myself being more sceptical about products that I see being flaunted everywhere by bloggers. This can sometimes put me off trying a certain brand or product which might actually be good.
I tend to go by recommendations of bloggers I actually respect and who's opinions I trust.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 436 ✭✭Ray37

Yep, if I'm seeing something plastered all over social media, I always have to wonder how good the stuff really is.... I just think it musnt be selling very well if we have to be reminded of it every thirty seconds. Look at the likes of Flormar, it was everywhere a few months ago, every blogger had it in their goodbags for their masterclasses, and havent heard a peep about it since. If someone is being paid to repeat the same lines about some 'amazing' product, I really doubt how good it will be. I'd rather see a full tutorial and review on youtube, than a few crappy swatches on someones arm!

Having random bloggers pushing a brand really cheapens in my mind. I can't get on board with recommendations from bloggers who don't disclose ads or abide by the rules of the game they are in. How can anyone be expected to take them seriously when they say stuff like it's too much trouble to add #ad to each snap or if I worked in an office I wouldn't have to say I'm being paid for this (MUF- the mind boggles how one could compare those two scenarios). If you're doing a job I.e. It is a paid ad, then you disclose appropriately and full or you're not to be trusted in my eyes. It doesn't matter whether I enjoy your other content or not, I won't trust your recommendations or buy based on them.

A brand that has really been cheapened in my eyes by it's association with bloggers is Benefit. I don't even consider them now when buying make up. I'd prefer non drugstore brands stuck to non-drugstore standard bloggers. If you're paying a premium for the brand I don't expect to see every Joe Soap being paid to flog it. Quality over quantity.

^^ tthis, but I really want my name on my hairdryer!
Nobody seems to talk about the Dyson anymore after they all went in for their freebie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Siobhnk

Another thing people will have to start thinking of now is the prominence of their #ad. I was going through a bloggers page earlier today promoting someone, and to be fair to her she did #sp, but it was in the middle of about 20 other hashtags. I've no doubt in my mind that that was to intentionally mislead people into missing it. I did have to look through the list of hashtags two or three times.

Imagine actually buying one on recommendation from a blogger who used it a handful of times and hailed it as the best thing ever, but hasn't mentioned it since. Morto.
Of course people need to take some personal responsibility for their purchases, but the influx of ads and the latest fads and the frequency with which we are seeing them, it's just all too much and people can feel pressured into buying things.
It's one thing recommending a flormar primer for €5 but a Dyson hairdryer for €400..it's a different story.

    or a €350 travel buggy!

I'd actually like a genuine review of that buggy, not just "oh yes it's amazing!". Like I get people spend whatever they want on items like that but 400 doesnt mean it's the best. All we saw was "it folds up and expands quickly and you can carry it on", but surely that then means you're losing a carry on bag, which you really need when you're traveling with kids. Reviews should be non biased and contain pros and cons, which I have never seen on any of the Bella Baby stuff, they just rave about it, and it's usually expensive things. Like that pillow for 300

I'm so sick of Bella baby and meaghers they don't ensure a proper review is made of their products
I read something a blogger posted on a Facebook group saying she was gifted something from Bella baby after she had her own baby but didn't promote the product enough so they pestered her until she returned it to them
That's so bad she had just had her baby and had no energy to argue that it was gifted to her

See I don't understand how thats a gift and not an ad when it's given in understanding that they give x amount back in publicity?

It's definitely an ad but to take something back when she's just had a baby because she didn't promote it enough is wrong imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭Lindy97

If it was a gift they would let her keep it regardless of how much advertising she did, so its an ad.

How can any of this be at all legal? The ethics of some of these brands is dispicable.

Surely if they have provided a product, and asked for it back coz it wasnt promoted enough, that's not a gift, but an ad? God I am so SICK of how some of these businesses carry on!
