For anyone looking to order it. Very impressed with the OP5 so far. Excellent battery life.

Not only 64gb, you also get 2gb of extra ram (that you probably won't use). I got the 128mb -my previous phone was 16gb and I had a 64gb SD Card, both my phone and card were running out of space ---- I kinda use my phone as extension of my computer and gradually shifting to cloud. I usually stay with my phones for 2+ years, I don't think extra 60€ will make a difference if I analyse this way.

I like the idea of the extra 2GB of Ram as well.

Plus black is the better looking phone :)

If you plan on putting a cover on the phone you won't really see the colour though.

I like the 'midnight' black one - I don't use a cover. Mainly the ugly ones from OnePlus :)

I've no cover on my OP2 for the last year or so, so wasn't thinking of a case for the 5.

Was going to get the car charger and an extra charger with the phone.

Enough with the codes already, peeps - it's turning the thread into a reward-points-gathering exercise rather than something people would want to read. Seeing as every code can be used multiple times, I think that we're covered now. Please PM codes to those who ask for them (as was working quite well before yesterday)

The only thing giving me pause on getting an OP5 is the camera. I don't need the world's greatest camera, but I at least want it to be decent for €500.

Very, very tempted, though. Sick to death of the battery on my HTC10, but the 10's camera is pretty good.

I was pleasantly surprised by the camera. 2x zoom is a bit gimmicky but it's good for macro shots. Performs as expected in low light. Complaints about video stabilization only apply to 4k footage and the front facing camera is probably the best on the market. Also, battery life is unreal.

I hate what One Plus have done here. I've the 8gb ordered, but the S8 for an extra 30 euro won't stop flirting with me ha.

They are pushing it. While the infinity display is a big draw, I'd still choose the OP5 for overall performance and software experience. I don't really like the curved display either. The 2.5D is spot on imo.

Given all the complaints about lag on the S8, and the failure of the most recent update to address it, I'll be avoiding it like the plague. Samsung software remains liable to turn into a ****-show, I remember the disaster of the S3 all too clearly.

Are low light shots any way half decent?

That S8 only has 64GB storage? How much extra is the S8 to match your OP5 you've ordered?

Well you can get an SD card for cheap enough. So, maybe 50-60 euro more (no phone needs 8GB of ram). But that is offset with a 4k screen and better camera on the S8 although slower performance.

I like to get 2-3+ years out of my phone, so I do think the OP5 is the better option.

They're definitely usable. Certainly a big upgrade from my Nexus 5 but that wouldn't be hard.

This video gives a fairly good overview. It holds its own fairly well against the iPhone 7 plus.

Interesting article doing a camera shoot-out between OP5, S8 and Pixel here

TLDR: Writer thinks S8 beats both or equals Pixel in most cases but OP5 still holds its own and actually performs better than Pixel in some situations. OP5's camera is good considering the price-tag and could certainly improve with further software updates.

That's me tipped over the edge.

I'm still trying to evaluate it fully but, in my experience and in comparison with the S7, it stacks up reasonably well. The S7 produces better lit shots when lighting is not as good but can, as a consequence, blow out some detail that the OP5 will pick up albeit with a slightly noisier image. The OP5 does not seem to be as good at picking up detail in the middle-to-long range where items become more smeared (e.g. far away trees with foliage or painted pebble-dash wall). I've found detail with hair also to be problematic and seen some issues with skin tones being over-simplified to watercolour effect but I've not had a chance to retest those since the latest software updates. Bokeh is fun but needs some work too. To summarise, it's not the best camera by any means but it's a reasonable choice in good light and is at least in the same ball-park as the S7 camera, winning some battles and losing others depending on what you're focussing on. OnePlus are still sending out regular updates though so treat it as an improving work in progress.

Edit: now that I've read the article above, I'd largely agree with it. The areas that I'd have problems with are the same as where he looks at close detail on the fence or closer detail on the facial portrait. Not sure how much of those is down to the camera hardware vs software though but we hope for even better updates to come.

I've been weighing my options for days now. There is a decent deal for a brand new LG G6 on ebay that comes to about €400.

How are folks finding the cases they ordered from 1+ along with their OP5s?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

Have the Karbon case. Adds hardly any weight or bulk to the phone and increases "grippiness". Happy with it!

Did you get the 'protective case' or the 'bumper case'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

Protective - it came with the welcome pack. Bumper looks like it'll be a *little* more bulky but I'm sure it also offers that little bit more protection so it's down to personal preference or price really afaics. Maybe someone who's done a bit more research on them might be able to tell you a bit more than I can - sorry!

I got the Sandstone one, wasn't mad on the others, very lightweight and thin. I'm happy with it.

    Memories of the OPO :D

The protective cases don't fully cover top and bottom, but do they at least give reasonable cover for the corners?

The sandstone one is heavier than the rest I think
