On another topic - had lunch in Lishh (Dosco Business Park - south douglas rd) today - wow what a find - all locally sources ingredients - top top quality - minimal (if any) processed food.. great space, service - v v generous portions.. what a treat...

Heard a similar positive report about this place lately. I had been to it several times when it was on the main street in Turner's Cross (presume it's the same crowd?), and while the food was actually very good, the overall cleanliness of the cafe left a lot to be desired! Hope it's improved.

ok how is Lily house different to all the crap Chinese places in the city/country?

No one claimed they are from what I can see, though personally I like Chinese so the addition of one nearby work makes for a nice change for lunch occasionally.

If you want some non-crap Chinese though, give Yuan Ming Yuan a go. :D

not his place is in the business park - so a different premises I guess.. didn't notice any discrepancies regards to hygiene - I think I would have as its something i would be mindful of..

I don't like the phrase "Artisan" but all ingredients are local and great quality - they list their suppliers etc.. and everything was soo fresh..

well I don't do chinese as I have had so many bad ones - but yes, a mate brought me to YMY recently and as chinese restaurants go, I was impressed - the service and presentation was superb - the food was good too

It's only in the business park a year or so. Being going there for years now, nice spot. Bit variable as to the quality but good lunches.

You can't beat a Eurosaver Double Cheeseburger for €2 ;)

This, I've not eaten in every Chinese in Ireland but I've yet to find one better than this.

Staff and the food are exceptional.

I hadn't been for a very long time and when we walked in they remembered the table we sat at the last time and asked if we wanted it again

It's the only Chinese I'll eat in but it seems that every time I go, they've taken something I love off the menu.

    Three dishes gone so far.

One to avoid if you are allergic to MSG.

One to avoid if you are allergic to MSG.

    MSG is not an allergen.
There is no scientific evidence of anyone being allergic to MSG and it occurs naturally in lots of foods.

Why do you say that about Yuan Ming Yuan?
Have you reason to believe that they use it more than any other Chinese restaurant? Do you even know for a fact that they use it at all?

    Do enlighten us.

I'll enlighten you as others may not be so unenlightened. The owner told me when I asked having been there twice before and got a headache on both occasions. To be fair, he pointedout a couple of dishes that had no MSG..

I always avoid MSG as, like many other people according to research, it gives me a headache. I go to the Royal Pacific a lot and never get a headache. They told me they don't use MSG at all.

FYI MSG is called tender salt from the wholesalers ;). What gives you the headaches is to much salt ....

Maybe! The research seems inconclusive. Could be the placebo effect in reverse too. But I do know when I avoid too much MSG I don't get a headache. Anyway, the staff in the Yuan Ming Yuan are always very nice and the food I ate was very tasty.

We ate in Rachel's last week, and overall, really liked it. It's very contemporary and higher end, which is something missing in Cork at the moment (I think). The interior is very smart, industrial chic, and I liked all the art pieces dotted around.

I had buttered baby carrots with buffalo ricotta and hazelnuts to start, followed by rack of spring lamb, with peas, wild garlic and almond crust, and salsa verde. Overall, very good, beautifully presented, though I think the carrot & ricotta was missing a small element of zing.

For those asking earlier, pizza is €20 while the risotto is €25. I think those are expensive prices for those dishes. The higher priced end of the menu is more normal.

Wine selection is good. We had two cocktails to start which were way too sweet and I was beginning to think the cocktails were a disaster. However, we had two more after the meal which were much better and actually very good. The first two cocktails were house creations, while the second two were classic cocktails (Brandy Crusta and a Manhattan), which probably explains the difference.

Overall, I really liked Rachel's. It's a good addition to Cork dining, but it is at the higher priced end of the market.

So €25 for risotto and the cocktails are crap. There's a market for it in Cork I suppose.

Some of the cocktails were to sweet for my liking, but others were really good. Mixed bag.

There was one pizza on for mains that night and it was €20. There are flatbreads for starters which cost €13 & €12.50, so maybe that's were your friend is coming from?

We went to the Fish bar at the Electric the other night. I love that place, but I wish to feck they took reservations. We waited in the bar and I get way too merry drinking on an empty stomach.

Anyway, we tried loads of stuff between the lot of us. Bloody mary oysters... really tasty, but they came in tall skinny shot glasses. Bit fiddly to get all the stuff out. Calamari were outrageously good. Haddock tacos, noms. Hake burger, v nice.

Sharing platter of dessert was a winner too. Salted caramel choc tarts, creme brulee, icecream and some crunchy things.. homecomb? Anyway, all in all , still love it. Atmosphere is loud music and high stools. The ubiquitous subway tiles on the walls, and nice views.

Sounds great, must try it. Only ever had the bar food there which was only okay.

Went to Market Lane last night. A few years ago I used to find it very hit and miss but the last couple of years every meal I've had there has been perfect. I had a pearl barley, pea and goats cheese risotto. So tasty! My Mother had veggie chilli which was also very nice. They always have great vegetarian options.

Went to the Electric in the afternoon some time ago. The food was ok, but the portions wouldn't qualify as a starter.

Unfortunately Electric is very very average now. Ate there a couple of weeks back; got the fish n chips and the 'growler' of beer (which was 1,5L we were told by the waiter). Seemed like a good deal for €20. Not so impressed though when the food was poor and it turned out there was only a litre of beer!

Nobody was particularly impressed by their meal.

Was in Lishh Saturday morning, very friendly staff and a great selection of food and cakes......my god the cakes! :P

Went to Electric last week having had great experiences there so far. Very average this time out, I had the fillet steak which was cooked within an inch of it's life despite me requesting rare. Sent it back and got another which was still well done.

Ordered a Budvar there to which the waiter advised that they were out but had Chieftain which is another beer from a famous Czech brewery, I could hardly contain my laughter :D

That sounds like the same bullsh!tter that said the growler was 500ml more than it actually is. They must be on commission to sell the Franciscan Well stuff.

Eco's in Douglas for dinner last night.
Has been about 2 years since i was there last and every time i go there i'm reminded of why its not for me.
so squished, so loud, such massive portions, like off putting amounts of food... (thats just a personal preference i hate feeling like im eating out of a trough)
Service is good, fast and snappy but but good, waiter who served the table was friendly and engaging,
Starters we shared garlic breads they come with pesto and cheese, nothing to write home about but not not good if you get me.
Mains we had: a beef madras, the Eco burger and  chicken satay.
sweet jesus lads the madras and satay were the biggest things ive ever seen in my life, they could half the portion and you would still be taking it home.
My burger was manky. dry on the inside but the bun was greasy and meat overcooked. Chips were lovely
Madras and satay were tasty but one full time giant farmer man couldnt finish his curry (not like him at all) and half the satay was left behind.
The foods not bad (its not great but its not bad), the service is great, the place is loud and cramped, but it is good value for money and if your not overly fussed about quality and taste it is good.
The one suggestion i would make is its great for a feed, if thats what your looking for. I do hate massive portion and this was overkill. A giant serving bowl/plate of curry then a separate bowl of rice is unnecessary.  I asked to see the kids menu and the waiter did say they didnt allow adults eat off the kids menu (fair enough) but then offer half portions of the food coz its a total waste of food. Prices are good for what you get 15 euro for the curry and satay 14 for the burger. Sides are really good and deserts! amazing! try the banoffi pie!
