Starting off it should also have:
    Irish Radio app.
A Spotlight section for setting recording, similar to the Saorview app.
Being able to set recordings from the app when you are not at home.

In the future we could see Netflix and TV3 apps also joining.

It all sounds very very exciting. I can't wait for 2014 to roll around again.

    Edit: /s

This quote is from RTÉ's proposal document in relation to the Oireachtas channel on Saorview which appears to indicate the various Oireachtas streams could be made available over Saorview Connect.
This channel will be available in high quality digital broadcast format. As SAORVIEW advances with hybrid solutions in set top boxes bringing innovative functionality and interactivity, the Oireachtas TV service can be part of the content offering that will help bridge the digital divide.

The issue also came up in a Oireachtas committee discussion with RTÉ last Nov - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=101791023

Announced recently, RTÉ's Next Generation Player will launch later this year across multiple platforms including Saorview Connect (maybe in conjunction with Saorview Connect).

The tender for RTÉ's Next Generation Player was published about 2 years ago - https://irl.eu-supply.com/app/rfq/publicpurchase_frameset.asp?PID=86163&B=ETENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=1&PP=
The new RTÉ Player experience will be a gateway into a world of great content, from box-sets and curated on-demand libraries across 10 genres, to exciting new original RTÉ Player shorts, as well as the ability to enjoy RTÉ's live channels on any screen.

Delivering a multi-platform experience, the redeveloped RTÉ Player will be available across web, iOS, Android, connected TVs and OTT services, including Saorview, Chromecast, Android TV and Apple TV.

RTE is to launch a significantly upgraded version of its video-on-demand service RTE Player later this year.

The new technology will play a key part in the broadcaster's strategy to compete in a digital TV market in which new services such as Netflix are gaining ground.

It is understood the next-generation platform, which is being developed with a number of international partners, involves an investment of close to €1m.
    ...
At present, content on RTE Player is available for 30 days from broadcast but in the new system content will be available for much longer periods.

The words 'Saorview Connect' aren't mentioned in any of those links.

I'd imagine whatever Saorview Connect is, or was going to be, it's going to be replaced by this new RTE service. It wouldn't make any sense for RTE to be developing two systems in parallel.

I believe the idea is that this software player will be able to be used on the Saorview Connect box.

Would they drop development of the Saorview Connect box at this stage?

That's the poster's idea, but there's no indication that it's actually going to pan out that way.

Well, something is up. Saorview wouldn't be developing a new box as such, they'd be tweaking the software on an existing box to whatever configuration they wanted. That's not rocket science, but it's nearly two years since this was all announced, I can't imagine how it could take this long unless they've run into a major problem.

I suppose it is possible that the box was delayed until the described software is ready ........ release both at the same time?

It is all guesswork at this stage as they have not said the connect box is no longer to be released.

The question is always if the economic market to develop a box is there.I would have thought most that bought boxes in the dso period would have integrated sets by now, are they going to buy another box now. It would make sense to adapt the freetime type software into a tv with a record facility.
As regards a stand alone box, Samsung have a bluray smart recorder, which could be a form of Saorview connect box if it were Saorview approved, ie series link etc. The box has hdd, RTÉ, tv3, TG4 apps, wifi but no sat facility.

Just to clarify, Saorview Connect is RTÉ'S OTT solution which integrates the next generation player.

The tender for the STB and connected TV player was published about the same time as the tender for the next generation player I linked to above - https://irl.eu-supply.com/app/rfq/publicpurchase_frameset.asp?PID=87195&B=ETENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=1&PP=ctm/Supplier/PublicTenders

Likely that the same contractor(s) was awarded both contracts as the next generation player is to be rolled out across all platforms according to their press release.

Saorview Connect is built on Freesat's Metaphor smart TV solution. Metaphor is the commercialized and marketed version of Freesat's Freetime HBBtv solution for international users licensed to Saorview and Tivùsat in Italy. IIRC, from a tweet or elsewhere official, the software will also be available to connected TV manufacturers.

Yeah I understand all that. But when something goes out to tender in April 2015, and in May 2017 there is still no sign of it, you'd have to ask if it's ever coming.

It's coming, the Saorview Connect branding and website management tender went out in Feb and the updated Nordig specification which includes the latest HbbTV standard was only published at the end of Jan, this could've been a reason for the delay.

It will be some box when it is released!! I have lost patience at this stage waiting...

I've recently checked with Saorview regarding this project, they're not committing to any timeline but confirmed that "We are working on this project and will be happy to announce when ready".

Generic answer, I know, but at least it wasn't a "What's that?" or a "That project was cancelled ages ago" response.

Chances are at this rate it will either be hopelessly obsolete by the time it is finally launched or it will be another 'Oirish answer for an Irish problem. Something so specialised to be useless to the majority of users like Saorsat.

    very likely

Mind you, a decent RTE Player on Chromecast would be good :) .. but hardly revolutionary.

On the contrary, if it incorporates the latest HbbTV v2.0.1 standard, which was included in the recently updated Nordig STB specification and mandatory from mid 2018, it should be technically ahead of similar services. Germany recently launched their connected TV service with a minimum receiver requirement having HbbTV v1.5 support.

What does the 2.0 version offer over the lower spec.

any chance that the boxes may possibly launch in tandem with the new upgraded RTE Player launch?

Speculated the same a few days ago, a single launch for Connect, Player and new website is probably likely.

I kind of figured it'd be transformed into some kind of Irish version of the NowTV box.

I kind of figured it'd be transformed into some kind of Irish version of the NowTV box.

It was always going to be an Irish version of the UK's terrestrial Freeview Play service with a satellite receiver incorporated into a version of the box.

Attached is the Freeview Play technical specification incorporating the latest HbbTV v2.0.1 specification.

I think you're missing my point - what it was "always going to be" and what it is going to be now / should be are not necessarily the same thing.

Speculation in the discussions here and lack of actual information may have led to unrealistic expectations for it. Nothing has changed since Saorview announced it and looking back now they may have announced it a bit too early, but, maybe they had to once the Sunday Times published the article.

I have a Saorview box, but little reason to turn it on!

The real problem is the complete lack of quality content, RTE is poor enough but the TV3 channels are worthless.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.
