When the connect boxs comes out will you need 2 cables from ariel to boxs for recording and watching different channels.

No ...... the DVB-T (terrestrial) aerial wire can be split to feed two inputs IF that should be necessary. It shouldn't, as the 'split' should be done within the device.

    From Todays Irish Independent:

RTE has put the design contract for its Saorview service out to tender.

The freeview service is currently used by more than 670,000 households around the country - about 42pc of the total that have a TV service.
Issuing a request for tenders this week, RTE said that it wants to appoint a single agency to provide creative services for Saorview.

RTE also pointed out that it was still planning to launch its Saorview Connect service.
The broadcaster announced in January last year that it had teamed up with UK-based free-to-air firm Freesat - which is owned by ITV and the BBC - to provide a new service here called Saorview Connect.

RTE said the new service was due to begin in 2016. However, it has still not been launched.
The Saorview Connect service will enable viewers to hook a set-top box up to their broadband service, with a range of new features, including content recommendations, programme title search, and enhanced recording capabilities.

RTE has told prospective tenders for the Saorview design contract that it still intends launching the Connect service.
"The launch of Saorview Connect will give rise to the need for updates to services and pages on the Saorview website," it noted.

"In addition, it is intended that the current Saorview branding be deployed in the creation of new branded materials for the launch of Saorview Connect, in respect of advertising on print, TV, online, in electrical retail stores and on social media."

Link to that article - RTE seeks design agency for Saorview as 'Connect' nears

    The tender published this week
    Short description
Saorview Brand - 17P009 Saorview Brand Creative and Website Management Services

    Detailed description
Saorview requires brand creative services including brand development, graphic design, motion graphics, copy-writing, advertising campaign design and execution The successful tenderer will demonstrate an understanding of the Saorview brand.

So it looks like quiet a way to go, brand development and advertising campaign design work yet to be done.

Aye, a long road awaits yet.

I'm more interested in the hardware side of things, like the set top boxes etc. I wonder will it be a few Vestel rebadges like Walker and Nordmende, or a higher tier product like Humax.

Request for tenders closed earlier today - https://irl.eu-supply.com/app/rfq/publicpurchase_frameset.asp?PID=108520&B=ETENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=1&PP=ctm/Supplier/PublicTenders.

    This from the tender documents
    Contract Purpose

RTÉ seeks a single agency to provide creative services for Saorview. The services required are as follows:

    - Brand Creative Services
Saorview requires brand creative services including brand development, graphic design, motion graphics, copywriting, advertising campaign design and execution (across all platforms – television, online, social media, email, print and outdoor), product packaging design and POS collateral. The successful tenderer will demonstrate an understanding of the Saorview brand.

    - Website Content Creation and Management Services
The Saorview website is managed externally and is hosted on RTÉ servers. Web Content Management Services include control of the existing CMS, development and publication of new content and support for technical and security upgrades as required to maintain a consistent and reliable online presence. The successful tenderer will demonstrate competence in both web design and web hosting for major organisations in Ireland.

    The Specification

There are some 1.6m households with a television service. There are just over 670,000 homes that already have Saorview.

Saorview operates in a horizontal market for equipment supply, whereby consumers purchase products that are designed to receive the service from retailers and installers across Ireland.

As part of the development of the Saorview platform, we intend to launch a new service to be known as Saorview Connect. The Saorview Connect platform will utilise both Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) and IP technology to deliver the service via a new type of Set-Top Box (STB) that consumers will purchase and connect to their TV.

The launch of Saorview Connect will give rise to the need for updates to services and pages on the Saorview website. In addition, it is intended that the current Saorview branding be deployed in the creation of new branded materials for the launch of Saorview Connect, in respect of advertising on print, TV, online, in electrical retail stores and on social media.

The successful tenderer will demonstrate experience in brand development, creative design and website development and support for corporate clients. They will be capable of working in co-operation with the Saorview team in RTÉ in developing and maintaining the Saorview brand and tone of voice in text and visual communications across multiple media to include web, online, print, and in-store. Experience in TV ad design and production is essential.

Saorview is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced agency to manage its ongoing brand creative requirements, in line with current and evolving requirements. NOTE: RTÉ is the owner of the Saorview and Saorview Connect brands and associated trademarks and word marks.

RTÉ owns and controls the domain www.saorview.ie, and the Saorview Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Copright in all assets created under this contract will be vested in RTÉ.

    Term of contract

The term of any contract awarded under this competition will be 24 months, with an option to extend for further periods of 1 year(s) up to a maximum period of 5 year(s) at the discretion of RTÉ.

Also from the recent Saorview Contact Centre Services tender
As part of the development of the Saorview platform, we intend to launch a new service to be known as Saorview Connect in 2017. The Saorview Connect platform will utilise both Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) and IP technology to deliver the service via a new type of Set-Top Box (STB) that consumers will purchase and connect to their TV. It is envisaged that some TV sets will also feature Saorview Connect. Due to the launch of Saorview Connect, the successful tenderer will need to demonstrate competency in dealing with consumer technical and support queries in respect of DTT, IP, satellite and Consumer Electronics products. It is anticipated that the launch of Saorview Connect will be a significant driver of customer communications requirement.

At least satellite gets a mention in the contact centre section; I guess we can still live in hope it's not just tired old 'combi' no EPG & autotuneless FTA satellite! if it is god help them when/if they do large-scale tp and frequency changes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,574 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

No mention of Saorsat or is that what they mean in the passing reference to satellite competence. Why do I still get the feeling it will be a half-baked Oirish answer to an Irish problem. :(

It will be a right kick for anybody with Saorsat if this Connect combo is not Saorsat approved.

At the moment we have no Saorsat approved stb on the market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 693 ✭✭✭Dave..M

    Ah yes; Saorsat, I forgot...

One thing that puzzles me (or maybe it was mentioned earlier in this thread, I have tried to keep up with it!) is why the Walker 645 with Satfree & Saorview was pulled around the time Saorview Connect was due to come out, Was that just coincidence? I used to steer people that wanted to go FTA cheap or for multi room as they were simple for people to do freesat retunes and I'd have thought they were one of Walker's bigger sellers.

A saorsat/freesat combi would be a different beast would it not?

edit you can tell I've not been paying attention - purely IP based for UK channels? I'm struggling to see why that is what the market wants, or is it just the only option available because Freesat will not/cannot licence their EPG service for the Irish market?

Saorview/RTE have mentioned a combo as Saorview Connect (terrestrial/Sat tuner).
At the moment we do not have a Saorsat approved stb produced at the moment.

With the new Saorview connect combo about to enter the market - Why not have it Saorsat approved.

It would be nice to have a mheg5 compatiable satellite tuner, we could have red button functions on BBC, along with RTE digital aertel with RTE.

Also with the proposed internet services on the Saorview Connect stb -
Will they be carried on the terrestrial broadcast ?
Or will they be an app or service already installed on the stb ?

It's starting to get annoying that Saorsat blocks stuff that's on Saorview. I've nearly no interest in footie but it's the principle.

For me the thing that's missing on free to air is TG4 HD. (most of what's on the quasi-UK channels I can get via freesat anyway)

Will saorview connect supply HD, or can I get it on the interweb instead ?

No specific details yet but the linear channels will be via terrestrial broadcast and everything else via IP either already installed or downloadable. For example MHEG5 text over the broadcast stream will eventually be replaced by IP delivery of such services, when you select the text button on the remote and vice versa from IP to broadcast TV. Integration between the two is possible because of the HbbTV standard.

Just recently in Germany details of the FreenetTV Connect HbbTV platform were announced which includes access to news, playback TV, additional IPTV channels, media libraries, etc.

    Thank Cush,

So Germany will be going DVB-T2, with channels broadcasting terrestrial and some streamed over an internet connection.
Also a note to see that private owned HD Channels will be behind a pay wall after a time.

We may also see more channels added to the Saorview Connect platform with internet streaming.

So going back to Saorview Connect Combo Re: Saorsat

If the internet services are installed or download over the internet on the stb, if we have a Saorsat compatible/approved Sat tuner - it would make sense.

Also from reading whats happening with a pay wall for private owned HD Channels, we may never see FTA TV3 HD Channels on Saorview.

However no excuse for a State owned/funded TG4 HD not being FTA on Saorview/Saorsat.

    Saorsat & IP combo?

Sorry, I thought by "combo" box, we meant satellite and terrestrial receivers in the one box, to which the Connect service would then be an added feature.

There is zero chance of a new Saorsat box with this Connect lark installed. The numbers using Saorsat simply do not justify it.

If RTE/Saorview are going to introduce a new Saorview Connect Combo Terrestrial/Satellite,
Well why not have the Sat tuner Saorsat approved!

Having the Sat tuner Saorsat compatible/approved can only only offer better quality for the FTA sat user (television, audio,
radio, data, electronic program guide, digital teletext services).

If there is a Satellite tuner in the box is there any reason it could not be used for Saorsat?
So a combo Sat, DTT & IP box should fulfil needs for everyone.

The point is without Sat this box is doomed to a very small market of those who do not know about 'FTA Sat' or who definitely do not want a Sat. dish at their home.

There is a great 'excuse' should one be required, that the Sat tuner is for Saorsat.

Given that a lot of people are in apartments or accomodation that don't allow dishes but these people still want freesat channels I wonder could the box be used to watch these freesat channels through IPTV.

This would enable saorview to compete with the product offerings from virgin, sky and vodafone, etc. It would open up the saorview product to a lot more people.

Or is that highly unlikely as the freesat channels wouldn't be paid for?

Going by the German model, it could be the future to have some channels streamed over the internet.

I would imagine Freesat channels will remain Free as long as they are FTA on Astra 2.

A little worrying to see private owned HD TV stations going behind a pay wall in Germany, I would not like to see this happening in Britain.

It is possible that major sport events could become pay per view or elements of them, e.g. the Olympics - one basic feed on free to air could be free while you pay extra to view all channel feeds.

The same could be done with the Champions league or World Cups etc.

Whether there is enough of a market for that who knows.

I'm sorry to be so negative but I can't see this happening.

There are some seriously unrealistic expectations of what this box is going to deliver. It's going to be:
    - A Saorview tuner
    - A non-Freesat-approved satellite tuner (so no 7-day EPG)
    - Built-in RTE and TG4 player

No IPTV channels, no UK catchup services, and I doubt very much it will have TV3 involvement for the on-demand stuff.

Nothing has been confirmed. There were a couple of tweets from the Saorview account well over a year ago and one of the indicated a combo box would be available, but presumably a lot has changed since then, so who knows?

Bless your memory! :D Much better than mine.

Hopefully the specs have not changed and the box includes DVB-T, DVB-S tuners as well as open options to take content over internet connection.

Starting off it should also have:

A Spotlight section for setting recording, similar to the Saorview app.
Being able to set recordings from the app when you are not at home.

In the future we could see Netflix and TV3 apps also joining.
