Will any of the Freesat channels be on Saorview Connect?

No. Saorview connect does not involve any additional channels.

It is hoped that there will be a box which will combine the Saorview channels, the Connect features and satellite channels but no details yet.

They have tweeted that a combi Saorview/satellite receiver will be included in the range, no details to date on how the satellite channels will be accommodated on the receiver.

Freesat released a press release today regarding the new Saorview App

    http://www.freesat.co.uk/about-freesat/whats- new

"Freesat's latest delivery for RTÉ will give Irish audiences the chance to experience a connected TV service that rivals Pay TV providers.”

Hmmm, no doubt SKY, VM and the rest of the pay TV bandwagon are shaking in their boots at the thoughts of RTE and TV3(aka Fuzzovision)'s assault on their pockets.

Lovely fancy new app and nothing to use it on, where the hell is the Saorview Connect PVR box ? Talking about cart before the horse.

Freesat's Metaphor is exhibiting for the first time at IBC 2016 in Amsterdam from Sept 8th-13th. The IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) is one of the world's leading annual broadcast technical tradeshows.

I wonder if we'll see the Saorview Connect box on the stand?

Freesat comes to IBC for the first time

The UK’s subscription-free satellite TV provider will have a stand at the RAI for the first time this year, demonstrating its multi-functional smart TV guide solution for international operators.

Based on Freesat’s years of experience operating a hybrid TV service in the UK, Metaphor is being marketed to terrestrial, satellite and cable operators who want to integrate broadband on-demand services into their existing linear broadcast offering. Through Metaphor, Freesat can offer partners a tried and tested user experience, delivered through a cloud-based service management and analytics platform, backed up by full UK based operational support.

Freesat has already provided the Metaphor solution to Irish broadcaster RTÉ for its Saorview Connect HbbTV solution, including the launch of the Saorview App, and Italian free satellite operator tivùsat for its OTT service tivùon.

I would prefer the app in place before the new box, rather than the other way round.

I would prefer the software in the box rather than an app.

7 day epg on a tablet but not in the GUI. Hopefully no one notices that.

The Saorview Connect box will have the standard 7 day epg for Saorview but not for the satellite channels in the combi model we are led to believe. Unlikely also that the app will have a guide for the satellite channels.

There's no chance this will be released before Christmas...no rumours of a date and no pics of what the final box will look like.

Ryle Nugent was interviewed by thejournal.ie recently and he mentioned how rtesport were now competing with sport offerings also offered by the freesat channels.

Would a combo box with the freesat channels but with Irish ads be technically possible. I doubt freesat are too worried about the ad revenue from Ire although I do think the sky platform ads have Irish advertising content.

I doubt the above will happen and given how ad ridden the rte player is and its technical problems I am not sure how good this box will be.

The 7 day catchup will be one of the big selling points even if it is only for the saorview channels. But again how many of the programmes will be available due to copyright.

I think Ryle Nugent was referring to the financial might of the pay TV broadcasters like Sky/BT and not Freesat channels BBC/ITV, buying sports rights for the Irish market e.g. GAA championship rights, Sat 3pm football, rugby.

What advertising a UK channel carries has nothing to do with the Freesat or Sky platforms. Individual decision for each channel, Freesat has no say in the matter.

Next generation RTÉ player on the way, contracts awarded July 2015, about the same time as Saorview Connect contract was awarded. I assume it was also awarded to Freesat.

This is what happens when you read the word Freesat as the platform rather than the operator in a press release.

So its just a 7 day online epg within the app for Saorview. What makes them think that this will be a hit. Someone within RTE is rolling out a lot of stuff for a platform that doesnt have the content!

    .

Why would their be a need to have Freesat channels with Irish adverts. They are all broadcast Free to Air into Ireland anyway.

Technically possible All of what RTE are planning is already available and more, but is not in a official box.

The ability to mix Saorview & Satellite has been out for years in Enigma2 boxes.

The app will also allow remote record on the Connect box and access to on demand content via broadcaster's players.

As STB points out above, we have all that, and more, already with enigma boxes.

This product, if/when it comes out, is not aimed at people who know what an Enigma box is, let alone have one.

I'm still trying to figure out who it is actually aimed at to be honest. The people who are not technical enough for an enigma box but who want to be able to look at an EPG on their smartphone and remote record using the app? They want a 7 day epg for Irish channels but now/next for the channels they watch their UK soaps and X-Factor/Jungle trial shows on?

I think the market for what has been produced (from the bits we're hearing about) is small to be honest. I know it was never a runner but a combined EPG with 7 days for terrestrial and sat channels along with the ability to record would have sold well. The sad fact is most people of a certain age want to be able to turn on their TV and see what channels they have right in front of them, they don't want to go channel hunting on different lists anymore.

Going on what we think the box is - I wouldn't buy one for my parents for their bedroom to be honest, and it certainly wouldn't tempt them to consider dropping pay TV in their living room which they really only used to look at/record the Irish & UK free channels.

Can people recommend combo boxes with enigma 2 on them? I get the feeling they are not perfect either. Is series link available on them.
I guess the itv hub and bbc player are not available on them?

Are tv3 and tg4 players on these boxes.

I have a chromecast and I am thinking it might be a better option.

Saorview current EPG is a joke, today it shows the same schedule for 7pm tonight onwards on RTÉ2 as it does for next Monday 12th, who makes these mistakes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,911 ✭✭✭Ten Pin

Seems to be a few different versions of the EPG that all seem to come from RTE.

    Saorview website (7 day)

RTE website (8 day and also has Sky and VM)

Then there's the live EPG on Saorview TV / STB.

Does Saorview advertise an 8-day EPG?

Nothing on the saorview site when I checked a few days ago.

One of the highlights is meant to be the 7 day catchup though some using the Vodafone tv version are saying that a lot of programmes are not available for catchup.
