I don't think spyro has aged well either. It's like a poor man's mario 64 and has way too much talking just like the rare games of the era and the aesthetic us way too cute and try hard. They're good but there's a lot better.

I've been saying that since the games release!

Just limited, particularly in comparison with Mario 64.

    Hey guys.

I bought a new TV (Sony x800d 4k) and when hooking up my American SNES with RGB scart the screen flickers. I've attached a video below.
The weird thing is, a few times after restarting it, it worked fine. Then I'd restart it again and back to this.

    https://vid.me/PzvX

I tried my Japanese N64 through RGB scart and I get just sound and no picture. I have the same TV downstairs and it's the same deal.

My PAL SNES seems to work fine through composite.

I have my old Samsung 1080P LCD downstairs and it works no bother with them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Never bothered to see what it was about as I dont use it for any retro stuff really.

No, no equivalent of selfie of a hammered Atavan in the ladies jacks of Coppers, so not even close.

So any Gundam fans on here?

Only recently gotten into the series. I started watching the latest spin off Iron Blooded Orphans as something to fill time between other series. The fight scenes and animation are absolutely stunning, possibly the best traditional animation of anything at the moment. It also dealt with some really deep themes like child warfare. It also had some great subversion from typical anime tropes, for instance the main gundam pilot is a the typical cool stand offish loner protagonist seen in near every anime these days, a really boring character archetype. However in this its because he's a cold emotionless sociopath and the story rarely focuses on him and is more about the more interesting characters.

However there was quite a bit of anime melodrama that let it down. It wasn't enough to spoil the series but it was annoying as the pieces were there for it to be something really special.

Then season 2 happened. Season 2 is some of the very best tv I've ever seen. The melodrama is replaced by a brilliant political war thriller dealing with moral grey areas. It all wrapped up in a hugely satisfying series finale. It's the best anime I've seen since the fantastic Parasyte.

So I started watching gundam for the beginning, the 79 original and I'm loving it. The animation is really ropey as expected but for a kids show designed to sell toys it's remarkably dark dealing with issues like refugees and a child protagonist thrown into a war and suffering from ptsd from all the killing he has done. The antagonist char is even more fascimating and I love his scheming and back stabbing of his supposed allies.

If your enjoying it now just wait until you get to Gundam Wing & Gundam Seed my favorite animes of all time.

Wing's hillarious, hasn't aged well but is still my favorite.

Wing isn't that well liked by gunman fans. Seems most of the love for it is from it being the first one to show in the west on tv.

I was never exposed to Gundam back in the day, that is to say the mid-80's, I was watching the translation of the Macross saga instead, Robotech.
I have to say, I really enjoyed it, though it was a bit of a hack job, particularly the later seasons.
I must go back and watch the original subtitled version, over the summer.

Two decent Robotech games too, I have both on the Xbox, with the first one really really good.

    Robotech: Battlecry

    Robotech: Invasion

I haven't played any of the Macross games however, but they look great, not sure how easy they'd be to play with the rpg elements in japanese.

    Macross 30, PS3

    Macross, PS2

And seeing as this is a retro forum
    Macross on Snes

The super robot wars games are getting English subtitled releases in Asian markets now, looking forward to playing super robot wars V whenever it makes its way from Hong Kong to here. Nearing month now!

Imagine my delight in searching for "Super Robot Wars" and seeing, on the wiki page, that it's a "tactical rpg"... none, no delight whatsoever...

Aw, I love strategy RPGs. Some of the best games ever are in that genre from hardcore RPGs like final fantasy tactics to really fun simple games like shining force 2 which was the first RPG I ever played and a good starting point.

Speaking of tactical RPGs with mechs front mission 3 is one of my favourites. It's a great starting point as well since it's about as simple as shining force. The mechs are also called wanzers which makes me giggle.

So, your response to my statement that I don't like Tactical RPGs is to post more about tactical rpgs!!!

    Right, you deserve this so....

Like most things from Radiohead these days, I have no idea what's going on, but it features a Spectrum loading something!

    I liked that SNES one.

I've only played this one in Japanese, I liked the music in the map / talking parts

I liked this one too (A spinoff of the crossover series by Banpresto, which combines the universes of Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Gundam.)

I loved the Front Mission that was on the SNES. Never got around to playing any of the others.

    Master of the Universe

It's one series that has been on my list to play for years and years but just never got around to it.

Going to track down a copy of Front Mission 3 on ebay now, looks like great fun.

Not played much of it but what I did was a lot of fun. There's a remake on DS which I've not played yet.

I've beaten FM4 on PS2. US only in English. It's ok but the battles are too big and it takes forever to finish one.

I played a small bit of the fan translation of FM5 and it seems like a return to FM1 and 3 with fast paced battles that are lots of fun.

It's basically Shining Force with robots and huge amounts of customisation.

Anyone recommend a good paint for snes console?
I have a case there that I would like to change up a bit but wondering what the best paint is to use on that type of plastic.

edit: Only joking, please don't use Sandtex on your Snes....

The customisation in 3 is simple but will trip people up. If you have fully upgraded armour and get better armour the better armour stats are compared to the fully upgraded armour so it looks terrible. I went through the game with near starting armour and got to a point where I couldn't beat a level. Just had to change armour.

Also you should be doing that anyway as different armours have different skills and changing is the only way to learn new ones.

Don't think FM1 is as bad....

as in a custom colour? I'd imagine some kinda spray paint but there's definitely people here to put you in the right direction. I dunno if it needs prep like sanding ect.
If you do use spray, practice on something first, don't chance it if you haven't used it before.

Marks Models in Dublin would have supplies for painting similar materials.
    Give them a google, maybe

I need to stay away from that retro games forever facebook group. 50hz apologists and people that play games in 16:9 annoy me too much.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,753 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Yeah, it's jammed to the rafters with people intent on playing their Snes on a 52" flat panel, and that's just the ones who bother with original hardware.
I've had insults thrown when I've suggested that original hardware is the way to go, seriously, on a Retrogame FB page, by people who say they love older videogames.
I think at the root is not many of them played them in their original formats so they see them as quasi-historical remnants that they can play any way they like and f**k you for suggesting otherwise.

Some people don't have access to original hardware or a cry so that is forgivable. But 4:3 is a button on your remote control.
