10 Hex bullocks landed in the yard today. Bought 6 during the week on DD. Feb/March 16 Advertised at 420-450kg for €900
Bought 4 today 2 in the ring and 2 outside. June/Sept 2015 First 2 417kg for €860. He withdrew the second 2 at €875 gave him what he wanted which was €900 on the grounds that he brought them home for me. Saved me €40/50 to get someone else to bring em.
    Happy with my days dealings.

He said good continentals were making great prices though

Skibbereen was ginormous Friday but those Herefords would have only made 650 or 660

Yes transport probably saved him 12/ head and the question is did the two he bought privately go through the mart or was a farm to farm transfer done. Looking at mart's lately 2 YO HE's tend to be as good buying as anything else out there.

I'd be guessing when you say black bull weanlings that they are either aa or limo with a hint of dairy. Either way I'd say they were not far off their value.

You may well be right , one dealer followed them out and was insulted that the lad that brought them for me wouldnt sell them at a tenner a head more than in the ring and another rang me after the sale willing to take them at the same money they were making in the ring because he thought i should have been sorry for not letting them go
I wouldnt usually get interest like that from dealers so I'm guessing there may be a lift coming so I'll take my chance again in a few weeks .
Usually I'm a soft seller and dont bring stuff home from the mart but I think sometimes its no harm to hold out and let the buyers know that .
Two of them were off blue cows and were nice , one a proper aa and the other two would have had touch of fr about them alright

I'm the same as you. If I had my own trailer I would be more picky. Must pick one up

If they got that interest, it sounds like there was messing going on. Usually a bit more obvious with cull cows

That another twenty yoyo's saved. That makes 70 yoyo' across the lot. So you bought the lot got an average of 862.5 of a mart price if you add in saved fees and transport. It amazing how much money is saved by being willing to deal privately.

Any lad selling cattle should have his own transport if going to the mart

Alot to be said for buying through the Mart too bass. I'd hate to see the day they wouldn't be around.

Yes they are there to set a price. But you have the issue with dealers bulling tghe price on buyers and trying to buy cheaply off sellers. For that we pay a commission of 25-30 euro/ head betyween both parties and another 20-30 euro in transport for both parties if they have no transport. That a good 50 euro to play around with and for lads to sort transport between themselves. As well you spend maybe 4-6 hours between travelling and mart to buy or sell 4-6 cattle.

If lads were more realistic a lot more cattle would change hands in yards. But again lads often deal with tanglers to sort that. Some lads want the highest mart price for cattle and consider the buyer must pick up all the tyravelling costs. There is a lot of money at stake. On a bunch of 10 cattle 500 euro.

You may as well bring them to Athenry. Saturday buyers in Headford only want to see white, red and golden coloured cattle. The dealers will pick up the rest.

Had a lad from up the road who was at the mart yesterday and is a pain in the ring trying impart some advice on me there a while ago. I was runner up on a few yesterday and I knew I was bidding against dealers but I knew my limit and stopped each time when I needed to stop. It was like as if he was trying to tell me not to bother bidding against a dealer. I politely just walked away from him. My mart experience would be small but I'm not a total fool.
Oh and this was in a dressing room about 10 mins after a match.

It is mad the selection that some people will hold as divine commandment.

Impress the accountant, not the neighbour looking in over the ditch.

Idk , when I'm old and have to buy stock you might as well buy something that you like looking at rather than something that will make u 25e more

That is true and I appreciate that, there is the element I think where lads maybe milked in early years, their people were good with money since Moses was playing Minor, pension and payments in, so why not. Rolling money over and the firepower there.

Someone here had a quote about we all want the lovely Charolais looking in the back window and it struck me as so true.

When you look at the price of Hereford heifers, it doesn't make sense, they'll be some that will go fat looking at it etc, the DW isn't great but they make more than many beasts that will leave more.

When you look at the price of some continental bullocks it doesn't make sense unless you run a very tight ship with great grass.

Sympathy and farming are not great friends. There is some satisfcation in taking a very storish 400kg FR to a 360kg DW or even less. Herself hates HE yearlings much prefers a FR one. Me I just prefer a profit.
