I didn't mean to say borrow it but you could give someone a few quid to bring them home handy enough if you wanted not to sell

I'm just saying when I'm 70 and retired and money ain't too important a few charolais would be nicer than oul whiteheads imo

Much prefer a few nice Friesians, Whiteheads or Angus no running around the field after them. They will walk up for a pat on the head and follow a bucket to the next field. As well you will have a few extra bob to supplement the pension.

I don't know but make sure the calves don't go over six weeks old or they'll need to be TB tested.

When did this 6 weeks test come in? Maybe been lucky with timing if test and selling but never had to have one

You can move a calf up to 42 days old without a TB test if your herd isn't restricted.

At day 42 and over, the calf needs to be TB tested. That's been the rule with a good number of years now.

Seen some cracked prices for very average outfits tonight. Up to 2k with just born calves but I also seen a couple of springers go through and hard to break 1k all from the one herd . If you've the right suckler you'll do alright.

2 AAX heifers going to the mart on Tuesday, butcher heifers, gone fat, they stretched a bit over the winter, good frames but the fat scores would hammer me in the factory.

First time I've sent butcher heifers to the Mart, will they be just as cold when it comes to the price structure or is there a bit more leeway.

Be prepared to bring them home if not getting their worth .I find the butchers are tough in the mart and they wont make mistake of over paying anyway.

I'd be wondering how much she'd make in a mart. A neighbour of mine sold a eight year old limo cow, 500kgs for €1100 this week.

If she killed out at 45% and grades o You'd probably get €3.30 for her so round €1100

I saw a white ch cow yesterday around 900kg make €2140.... fat as a snail . I thought there was going to be slaps after it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Cavanjack

You'd wonder why the factories are sourcing cows in marts at that money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,530 ✭✭✭tanko

You can be sure they're not losing money on them, plenty of cash to be made turning cows into burgers.

Thats agents squaring up to each other...u can b sure the factory won't reward the buyer for it...factories are not fools...fair play to the seller he got caught up in a game of poker!

Very little cow meat goes into the premium burger market. McD's and other larger burger joints insist on using U30 month beef. You local chipper is not as fussy. That cow when slaughtered was casting up on if not over 4.5/kg. That is higher than prime underage beef. Somebody had a mine is bigger than yours syndrome.

Maybe they need to meet orders and sometimes it just means taking the hit on a small selection to fulfil a big consignment for dispatch on time.

I've seen it done in other industries but whether it applies.

The dealers are bigger fools than I thought if they are will to loose €200 on an animal just to outbid another dealer.

About 500 euro assuming a slaughter price of 3.5/ kg
