Just to be sure on something. I was going selling a few heifers in the mart, pure butcher beasts but they are within the withdrawal period for bimectin and meat.

So I have pulled them as I'm sure if they were tested that I'd be drawing a world of pain on myself.

Is that the right course of action or am I being over cautious, surely the responsibility would lie on my head, selling beasts that are fit for slaughter.

You were right, they could have been killed the next day and you may have been in a world of bother.

You can declare withdrawal date when selling. I did last year with a bullock that was still in withdrawal period for red water dose

Yere they were fat last august at 14 months but small pollies, I kept them over the winter on silage only hoping the frames would grow out and up, they did but they are still fat as hell, big boned they reply but fooling no one.

Seriously though, they are animals that are not for holding, they are over done, I'm going to have to restrict their diet I guess, never did that before.

If they were tested and I was caught I'd have the dept. hammer me and lose Bord Bia and understandably so, too much to lose over a near rookie error.

    Is that dairy?

Last suckler event I was at the advice was minimum 420 kg at breeding.

My understanding is 60% of mature weight so a continental cow going to 750kgs you're looking at 450kgs billing weight.
Diary bred heifer going to 600kgs you're looking at 360kgs.
The Newford herd and Teagasc research are pushing option 2 big time- the bigger cow costs more as a bulling heifer (90kgs heavier @ €2.30 per kg= +€207 along with a more expensive animal 50c per kg * 360kgs= +€180)
€387 per head more expensive for an animal which won't have enough milk.
Just my tuppence worth on the advice Teagasc are giving at present.

would bulling them at 360kgs not lead to calving difficulity -calving them too small?

Not really, that's the weight I've gone with the last couple of years.

Ya I'd agree if using dairy bred stock that they will be lighter at breeding alright.

The idea of extra weight costing more is only applicable if calving 365 days a year. If your heifer reaches the 360kgs a long time before you are set for breeding do you change your breeding pattern to suit?

I'd be disappointed if my replacement heifers were under 400kgs at a year old but I wont bull them until they are 14 or 15 months old or else I'd be calving them way earlier than everything else.

Brough 3 heifers to the Mart last week. 1st red lim, very muscular but wasn't going to grow 320kg 800. Nice square 4* red lim 355kg 1000 and an absolutely smashing red lim way nicer than the one that made 1000 but only 2 stars 385kg but was only making 920 and I didn't sell her. Icbf are no judge of cattle

Any idea what suckler teams are making in marts at moment....?
e.g. - 7/8 year old well fleshed cow lim/ch with month old calf at foot??
1st calver aa/lm with dairy breeding calved a few weeks?

I know the real u typeswith shapy calves are likely to make 2k+ but I'd like to gamble with a few more "promising" outfits!!

I saw a white ch cow yesterday around 900kg make €2140.... fat as a snail . I thought there was going to be slaps after it!

She would have ended up in France for €7.00 kg dw, and the fifth quarter in the pocket too.

Are cull cows still doing well in the marts? If there's anyone who's been recently. Or as well off to factory them when fit.

Anyone know what price per kilo a PBNR good quality heavy 5 yr old CH bull would make in the mart?

1500-1800 unless hes picked up by some lad for breeding.

€1800-€2000. I actually saw a fr bull today 1230kg. €1550. He was gigantic , cruel square & his chest nearly touched the ground

Had a quick look in at Ennis Mart today. Good fleshy cont type cows making a little over €2/kg. Saw a 1180kg char bull make €2340. He had pirate and cf52 breeding.
Heard too that 2 farmers were injured by a bull there. Taken away in an ambulance.

I'd have put him in a trailer, but everyone is different.

    Picked up 5 friesians 16 months at 500 - 308kg

Saw ones at 350 going for 660.

A Jersey Cow at 450 going for just under a euro a kg.

A fine limousin cow going for 1750

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,242 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Sold a Polly 2 yr old heifer 580 for 1250 at the mart.

5+ on the fat scale wouldn't even do her justice. 7+ might be nearer if there were such a thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,171 ✭✭✭✭Muckit

You would have probably done better with her if she wasn't as fat. The factory dock heavy once they go over 4+. Made the same mistake myself last year. Every days a school day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,242 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Aye, that is why she ended up in the Mart, the factory would have blacklisted me.

She was fat and small this time last year. She probably should have gone then but I hoped she might grow, she did, but the fat didn't go.

Every day is a School day.

heifers for export were BBx from 11 to 13 months old, tested in Feb and just did an online movement from my herd to his.

Weighed at his yard which wasn't far.
