Given the level of English in that email, I would seriously doubt the competency of the writer to provide accurate information.

    ;)

Yeah there is a little star on their page stating "Fair usage policy applies"

    https://www.puretelecom.ie/lightning-fibre/

Also in their terms Clause 3.4 states:

"3.4 You shall observe the provisions of Pures Fair Usage Policy as amended from time to time (and is available upon request)."

    https://www.puretelecom.ie/terms/

Puretelecom web site states Fair Usage Policy for lightning fibre puretelecom.ie/lightning-fibre/

westnet web site states Acceptable Usage Policy for their packages westnet.ie/acceptable-usage-policy/

Id think the web site is correct.

I'm going to email them again and request a copy of their FUP, see if they actually have a document setting it out. Might be a bit more reliable than the email I was sent

Is there actual reasons why internet is more expensive than that here or is it the providers milking it?

I don't know the reason ...... but cost of living would play a part no doubt.

We have a much more less dense housing pattern coupled with a much smaller market

It's because urban customers have to subsidize our massive 40% rural population. Land for telephone polls need to leased out and rural homes obviously need way more polls than urban homes. Ireland has a much higher rural population living in one-off bungalows than almost every country in Europe.

Of course you know the reason. You're part of the problem. It's because of rural parasites like yourself. Higher wages is a factor, but look at how much cheaper broadband is in the other Western European countries: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_price_rankings?displayCurrency=USD&itemId=33®ion=150

While you may have a somewhat valid argument, it is unfair to call people living in rural Ireland ''parasites''. Many of those ''parasites'' are farmers that supply you with food that is traceable and some of the safest food in the world. To make this food safe, farmers use a massive amount of technology and it is increasing daily with a greater reliance on internet connectivity. Almost all farmers control their herd movements using agfood.ie or apps such as herdwatch which without the internet would not be possible. If you want to learn more on this subject and the use of technology in farming, you can look at the big week on the farm which I'm sure you will have no problem watching if you're living in an urban area with decent broadband. I however can not, despite living less than 2 km from a large town.

Other ''parasites'' are large scale business owners who have set up in rural Ireland to avoid paying high rent prices. If we all decided to go and live in urban areas it might solve the problem of broadband but would increase the prices of rent even further and I think we can agree they are high enough

we are more like Australia than western Europe. a few urban pockets and then mostly very rural countryside. Just a much smaller country with really crap weather.

Whatever else you had to say is ignored.

It does, does it? What's the going rate for a lease on the land for a telephone pole?

    Do they pay back-rent?
I have a couple of poles on my site for decades (not for my phone) so maybe they owe me a lump sum!

I just did a check for a friend in Kerry, and he is indeed on a (now) Yellow line ..... right at the end of it.

So I used his phone number to check on the eir site and got the following result
eir Fibre hasn't reached your address yet but we can offer you these brilliant broadband bundles
    We checked 066-*******

    Not your number? Start again.

Speeds of up to 512Kb are available at your home.

Under that announcement they offered bundles including phone and TV and BroadBand!

    Hahahahahahaha

At least he is included in the eir FTTH roll out so he has some hope.

    .

Maybe OneEightSeven is the parasite? Living in a city/town on social welfare? Expecting to get broadband for free.

LOL it always descends into this nonsense about rural vs. urban - I've lived in both during my life funnily enough. I reckon must people have so - why can't we just get along, and stfu about it.

I do agree that better planning should have taken place in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but that's the way this country was, and back then it didn't really matter and everyone was happy. Rural has obviously been a problem after the early 2000's with bad broadband for so long but finally FTTH is a solution which can fix things so rural areas can now start to keep up with urban areas. After decades of neglect and excuses up untill very recently, we deserve it. Everyone deserves to have fast, reliable broadband, not a single person in this country should be left out. It is an essential part of living like knowing a device will work once you switch it using electricity.

At a guess , some one else who went over the fair usage allowance...http://www.boards.ie/ttfthread/2057727988

Everyone going over for the first few months on usage will pay for the fibre rollout on its own!!

Eir are gonna have to do something about that FUP. Eir haven't had a problem with their caps in years as they were always adequate for most people. But there is something wrong when the data gap for FTTH up to 1000 is the same as the data cap on ADSL 512k and everything in between.

There is complaints almost daily about excess charges since FTTH is starting to make its way to more and more customers. The FUP is completely hidden, there is no warning system and it clearly isn't enough for such connections. You have to use your FTTH connection sparingly to stay within 1tb per month.

There are far smaller companies who offer no data cap over Eir's FTTH, so surely Eir can easily increase that FUP to something far more appropriate for such connections. They will never drop the fup completely but at least up it to something decent like 5tb per month.

Did someone say digiweb and magnet have unrestricted data allowances on FTTH vs. Eir 1TB?

Do they KN lads do the install for service providers other than Eir e.g. digiweb?

    Anyone with Digiweb for FTTH?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭editorsean

This is Digiweb's fair usage policy for its FTTH package. I think it's the same for all plans, but this is from their 1Gbps FTTH package (Additional Information tab):
Unlimited Data: Digiweb operates an uncongested network and 1TB on this plan is considered fair use in any 30 day period prior to the 1st of the month. We do not throttle or cap service, however, if a customer exceeds the stated fair usage allowance for data on more than 2 occasions in any 90 day period, then Digiweb reserve the right to terminate or suspend the customer’s service. Digiweb will proactively contact customers in advance of any suspension or termination of service.

so right now both Eir and Digiweb have 1tb caps. I reckon Pure Telecom are the same, which leaves most of us with Eir's FTTH no choice of provider with truly unlimited data.

Westnet in Mayo resell Eir's FTTH and apparently offer a truly unlimited data allowance but that's no use for most of us as they don't operate outside of Mayo. Rocket broadband in Wexford have a fair usage policy as well, not sure what it is tho.

Not sure what Net 1's situation is, they say unlimited downloads which usually means it's capped.

Siro's service is restricted to 1tb caps as well with Vodafone and Digiweb.

and this is why FTTH is not doing well in Virgin Media areas, Virgin Media is cheaper and truly unlimited and every bit as fast in all but 1000 meg plans.

KN do all the installs, as far as I can tell. The retailer places an order with open eir, and is informed of progress up to the point of completion.
