I presume the 150 houses are outside the village on the FTTH, with the 580 premises within 1.5 km of village, and able to get FTTC. That leaves 20 houses, if there is no double-counting.

"580 premises in this exchange can now access up to 100Mb/s fibre broadband with 150 premises able to access 1000Mb/s fibre"

Ah the top of the box had been cut off by the top of my screen, I never even thought of the FTTC guys. Yeah that is prob everyone now, maybe one or two small branches left, but from driving around the place looks pretty wired up with boxes at this point.

I've had my order in for about a week now and no further contact, I'm hoping that I get a call nearer the end of the month when they start sending out engineers to install on the other houses and can fit me in.

just after logging in to my eir with my new details for the first time. It's been installed since Friday and i've only really had a chance to use it since Saturday morning. Since then I have downloaded 1 game (Starcraft 2) about 30 gigs, streamed some Netflix, watched some Youtube, downloaded a HD movie with Sky on demand, several hours of online gaming and some speedtests. My useage already is a whopping 105.32 GB, I thought my usage would be around 50gb at the most. Really scary how stuff adds up quickly when you have FTTH.
My monthly useage when I had my ADSL connection was averaging 200-400 gigs per month.

It really won't take much to break that 1tb allowance per month!.

Map now shows 150 houses in Kinvara can access up to 1000mbps. I think there was about 750 proposed houses listed in Kinvara. So still a bit of work to do.

Most of the FTTH exchange won't be live until 3rd May. They are taking Pre-orders over the phone but won't install until after that date.

Ah good, my exchange in Athenry went live last week too but Im on one of the lines that haven't gone live yet.
I'll try pre-ordering over the phone to see what they say.

What will happen when/if you do break the 1Tb limit?

You are charged several euros per gig over the limit. There are recently an increasing number of people complaining on the Eir forum over past 2 months about being charged extra for going over the limit, which most of them had no idea of because they thought the service was unlimited. The most recent complaint saw a customer billed an extra 188 euros for exceeding his data by an extra 800gigs.

I reckon this is starting to happen more regularly, not everyone who gets billed excess charges suddenly runs to boards.ie and complains about it, so I reckon quite a few are getting this.

I do agree that a download allowance should be in place, otherwise we could download half the internet in an afternoon, but 1tb is very small for such connections. Eir may have to look at increasing the fup soon to at least 2tb at a minimum. When FTTH first launched, the fup was only 500gigs, moved up to 1tb allowance a year ago.

Did I read, maybe on this thread, that there is a limit to the amount a customer can be charged for going over the FUP?

    Data use per min video

    144p - 1.90mb
    240p - 2.70mb
    360p - 4.40mb
    480p - 7.70mb
    720p - 14.50mb
    1080p - 27.67mb
Im not surprised you used 105Gb if you watch 4 HD video and download a game and watched some youtube.

Fibre packages with an unlimited usage allowance are subject to a fair usage policy of 1TB per month. Usage in excess of 1TB will be charged at €2.50 inc VAT for every 10GB up to a maximum of €100 inc VAT per month.

my old ADSL connection had the same 1tb allowance as FTTH. When I watched Youtube I had it default to 480p as even 720p would buffer alot and 1080p just wouldn't work. I don't know what Netflix was streaming at, but I reckon it was 720p. I instantly noticed a much better picture quality when using FTTH. All that in itself shows that keeping the same usage patterns as before will download far more data on FTTH because everything is 1080p.

The fup's will have to increase drastically when 4k becomes standard.

Question: can I use existing Eircom cable to pull fibre cable into house.? If I want to maintain a phone MUST I have 2 lines....the existing Eir line and the new fibre cable?

That is up to the installer.
If I want to maintain a phone MUST I have 2 lines....the existing Eir line and the new fibre cable?

If you want a separate POTs line then you must keep the copper cable and pay rental on it as normal.

Alternatively you can use a VOIP service working over the fibre connection.
If you want to keep the same phone number you need to make suitable (dependent on your choice of VOIP provider) arrangements to port your number before, or at the same timeas, you cancel your POTs line.

eir will be launching their own VOB/VOIP phone service over fibre later this autumn, so the copper cable will no longer be required.

    Many thanks Cush and Johnboy.
Looks like I will be getting rid of copper line. Holding it would make fibre too expensive for me.

From what other people have said on here, the installers won't use your copper to pull it through.
And then the other question is, what is the cost of the VoIP services, reliability etc?

At the very least they should have a few fail safes built into the system. Like send a text/email you when you hit 900GB, then lower your speed at 980Gb and text again, and the first time you go over 1TB send a letter but don't charge you.

After that you can argue the limit is too low, but not that you didn't know about it.

The bigger concerns though, a few people have mentioned, is that the online data usage checker doesn't track your billing period which is what Eir charge on. It resets at the start of the month to 0. So if you have a billing date in the middle of the month you have no way to check that you are getting close to the limit.

It seems crazy to have a limit that you have no way of tracking and such expensive costs.

Especially when you are buying their most expensive package to get speeds that can download 1TB in just over 2 hours.

the monthly cap is by billing period and not month? That would make it impossible to track what your usage is, surely it must be per month? So far I have 3 days usage showing, but in 20 days it will reset back to 0, but in reality I'll have an extra week of the next month to keep within 1tb?

Having all ADSL, FTTC and FTTH products on an unlimited '1tb' fup is just weird. ADSL customers have a tough time reaching that limit, most wouldn't even get half way towards it. Most FTTC customers would be fine on the 1tb, although those above 70megs would have to restrain themselves a bit, but the FTTH packages on 1tb is a bit crazy alright. The 150 should be on 2tb, the 300 on 4tb and the 1000 on 10tb per month.

I think that's not too much to ask when other companies such as Sky and Virgin Media and offer a truly unlimited service.

The cost is determined by the providers package that you, the customer, selects.
There are hundreds of providers to choose from so there will be many with suitable packages regardless requirements.

I have been using VOIP for years and it has been very reliable and problem free.

I'm not 100% sure but that is what was being reported by someone who got hit with a 100 euro bill. Looking at mine it just seems to show data usage by month. My billing date is the 27th.

When it's available I will definitely be using pure telecom instead. I emailed them about FUP and I got this back "Just to confirm there is know fair use policy, you are able to use as much usage as possible."

I live in Rosslare Strand, Wexford and according to the eir FTTH map there are 350 premises able to access 1000Mbs fibre. Our house is in a estate on the fibre line about 250 metres from the cabinet. According to the fibre checker we can get FTTC with speeds of 30Mb but according to the eir Fibre checker "Your premises is not on the rural fibre rollout programme". I cant find any premises in Rosslare Strand that can get the FTTH. Does anybody have any information abour FTTH in Rosslare Strand?

First of all, look at this map and see what your address comes up as. If it is in a dark blue area, it is covered by Fibre to the cabinet, giving probably somewhere less than 30Mb as the checker told you. If you have a light blue dot around your house, you're in luck and will be part of the FTTH network eir is building. In my opinion, this is the best way to see if you're covered by FTTH using your eircode. If you are amber on the first map and your eircode does not come up in the checker on the last link as part of the FTTH programme, then you will have to wait for the NBP unfortunately if you can't get the 30Mb. If you find that you are in a dark blue area and have a minimum connection speed of less than 30Mb, you should contact Broadband@DCCAE.gov.ie to let them know and you will probably be added to the National Broadband Plan This is eir's map of where FTTH is going on the yellow lines.

we would really need that in writing. If there is no fair usage policy, why does their website say several times that there is one. We've seen staff from various service providers give mis information fairly easily in the past * cough * Imagine.

As far as I know there is a fair usage policy on all Eir FTTH and Siro FTTH products by Eir, Vodafone and I presume Digiweb and Pure. Digiweb have been extremely strict on caps before, I doubt they have an unrestricted allowance.

We don't have a data cap either. In fact, our top downloader in the last 24 hours managed to download an eye-watering 250GB...! :)

(OK, that's a hotel on a dedicated fibre circuit, but still...)

I think I just terrified the local Eir rep - swung in after him into a driveway.
No special deals but I assume via a rep is the best way to get an installation date ?

It is! I removed their name to save the embarassment. Nearly as many redactions as the contract between DCCAE and Openeir! At least if they say I went over the FUP, I can read a direct quote over the phone to them from this email without them picking up on the horrendous grammar :D

Given the level of English in that email, I would seriously doubt the competency of the writer to provide accurate information.
