At €55 for 150mb FTTH 18 months contract I think most people in the country would be ecstatic....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭Decoda

Just tried to order Fibre from Digiweb and Pure to see what their contract lengths were. Digiweb say that all fibre packages are 18 month contracts. I can't get a definitive answer from Pure as they can't confirm that I can get Fibre.....but say that depending on package it will be 12 or 18 month contract. Cost is €65 per month incl. phone which I don't want.

Basically as Banjo says above, €40 for 3 months and the remaining 15 month at €55 for 150mb.....compared to what I'm receiving and paying for at the moment is a no brainer.....

When Eir finally provide FTTH to your area, what other alternative do you have?

    Badly worded sarcasm I'm afraid.
I'd sign a 3 year contract in my own blood for this service!

same here, still waiting to hear back what's the possible situation with my install after April 5th.

contract time doesn't really matter to me, it's either get great fibre with a contract or put up with the crap that I'm currently on for the rest of eternity!

This Friday will be exactly 1 year since Open Eir/KNN started working on the fibre in our area, back then I'd never have thought I'd still be waiting for an install date a whole year later!

Chatted online with Eir sales today. They confirmed that I can have Fibre BB for €50 a month and 12 months contract. Got our chat emailed to me so I have it in writing.
If they later say that that is incorrect then how can you believe anything that say?.

You can quote the chat, but sales reps and those behind the phone are working on a set system that they have no power to change so if it is 18 months, you have no choice unfortunately.

For the people who have been installed

Did anyone have any joy getting their address added to the list of houses that shows up on the Eir site checker ?

Have people successfully ordered on just an eircode and splitter number?

Not directly relevant, but interesting article in Examiner about Eircode usage-
"Fewer than one in 10 logistics and shipping companies have adapted their businesses to use Eircode, according to a survey by KPMG." Then again, it is KPMG...

This is more about FTTC than FTTH so apologies. The exchange i'm connected to has fibre, but i'm so far away from it that I can only get a max of 7mbs. I noticed today that KNN are laying cable not too far from my house. Is it possible that a cabinet near me would be upgraded and give me an option of getting decent broadband, or is that cable being laid just for FTTH. thanks

Got a call at 16.50 this evening from EIR installations wanting to know could I accommodate my installation tomorrow instead of next Monday as she said that they had at least 2 technicians in the vicinity tomorrow and they were looking for installations to do???

    Hell yeah bring it on.

It's been a long time coming but I'm nearly over the line. Fingers crossed it all goes without a hitch.

Would a letter D mark on a pole mean its down to be replaced?

Well Evan the extremely efficient and friendly KN networks technician has just left and unfortunately there's been a problem.

I knew before hand that it wouldn't be possible to use the existing duct as there's no access inside the house. Evan said the only way would be to remove the floor in the hall.....obviously a non starter.....

So it was outside to have a look at the overhead option. And the problem. I assumed that any overhead cable would go from pole across the road to our chimney, not so according to Health and Safety they are not allowed to place overhead cables above the fascia level of our house so it would have to go from the pole across the road to our fascia level. Any delivery to the house oil etc would have snagged on the cable. Also the cable would have to come down so sharp that it would be too low as it crossed the road.

My only option is to have a pole fitted in the garden to one side of the house and bring the fibre from this pole to the fascia level. Not ideal but the only solution. There's no cost to me as EIR say they will cover this as part of their installation. The location for the pole has been GPS'ed and it looks like the pole will be installed next Thursday and I'll have to have another installation appointment set up.

We've waited for years so what's another week or so.

I'll keep this page updated when I finally get it sorted.

I know the delay is a tad irritating, especially as you're so tantalisingly close

But the KN lads appear solution orientated.

    It fills me with confidence

Bring on autumn (our village upgrade date)

    No gable end?
That's where the overhead fibre went on my installation after they refused to use the duct.

yeah I thought they were gonna use the gable end of all the homes. Hopefully they will use that here when I finally get installation.

Eir have put up fibre extreme marketing signs on my road now, so they must be getting close. The eircode checker still says its not available for me yet though.
All the eir cabling on my road is underground, I hope that doesnt mean a slower installation. though I know my ducting to the road is clear and still has its string within it.

That's interesting - where are you around Galway?
Is this a new tactic? Has anyone else seen marketing signs round the country?

We finally have fibre cable on the poles down my road (Loughgeorge-Corandulla road N.W. of Claregalway), but no "lunchboxes" yet near me, which is close to the end of the blue (yellow?) line. Further up the road I saw some boxes on poles though.

Some of the cabling has a very low sag between the poles. I know someone posted here that their area had to be rewired because it was done too taut. Well some of my area looks too slack to me. I'll try to get some pics.

Im in Derrydonnell between Oranmore and Craughwell.
Eir have put up quite a lot of signs along the old dublin Road out to my house.
They could have put more along the road all the way out to Craughwell.
Nearly all of the cabling near me is underground but there are a few telephone polls around that have what looks like fibre ducting wound up at the base of them. I'm guessing the "lunchboxes" beside me must be within the eir manholes.

Great news. Your premises is on open eir’s 300k rural fibre rollout programme. We expect fibre broadband to be available to you by the first half of 2018.

I hope they meet their expectations. :)

    The map tells me
Estimated date for first Live FTTH Fibre Services with speeds up to 1000Mb/s is Spring/Summer 2018

    12 long months more ......

Unfortunately I'm in bungalow with a hipped roof all round so no gable end to come through. They are definitely helpful. He gave me pointers on the probable placement of the hardwired units in the attic so I can have my electrician get the cabling ready for them.

He says that for some installations the client want the modem left in the attic and at others they prefer it to be brought down into the house. Before KN come back I'm going to try and get an electrician to bring an Ethernet cable from the living room up through an existing wall conduit which used to carry a defunct TV cable. Is this possible? (sorry but I'm not the best at DIY / electrical etc.:o.). Would an electrician be able to pull ethernet cable (Cat5e?) from the attic to the livingroom and connect the end or run it through an ethernet wall plate?

I also have to explain to my wife about how we're going to have a pole in our garden..:P......

The road from Kilcolgan to Kinvara is plastered with Eir extreme signs, but it's not available yet. The exchange is live, so I presume FTTC is available in the village. Checked my own address 2 miles outside, and checker says will be available by the first half of 2017, then checked a house in the village and it says "Your premises is not on the rural fibre rollout programme. Please visit our rollout map to see if high speed broadband is already live in your area" So, does that mean FTTH will not be available immediately in the town, but will be available first outside the town?

hmm, I would have expected it to say next Wednesday.

ok Im quiet concerned, just checked all my neighbours around me and the checker is saying already available to them, it's just my house that is saying first half of 2017.

Eircode checker says mine will be available first half of 2017 too. Go live date of exchange on the old map is April 19

Hi  Banjopeter, From the map, kilcolgan isnt going live until summer but Kinvarra is due to go live on April 5th.
Id say the eircode checker will say its available from next wednesday if your house is on the Kinvarra exchange.
