Ian O'Riardan flying the flag for the OCI this morning.

Ian O'Riardan flying the flag for the IOC this morning.

So Joe said today on Twitter that the paper review will likely be an irregular occurrence moving forward come March with Ivan Yates show starting and taking the hour off the Off The Ball lads in which they would ordinarily do the paper review. During the Premier League season it will only appear on cup weekends or international breaks etc. Bloody pain in the hole...best hour of radio around each week...poxy Ivan!

That's a disappointment. I wonder could they do a similar type of piece as a podcast. Paper review by name obviously really only works on Sunday morning but a similar reflective type podcast of 2-3 key points (maybe taken from papers) could work.

It was dull as dishwater yesterday, but it IS normally the best hour of the week as was said above.

However, it seems that now that Kimmage is on with Matt Cooper on Monday, as one half of the chuckle brothers with Tony Cascarino, he will be appearing on NT's paper review less and less. And the slot needs either Kimmage or Gary O'Toole or somebody not afraid to air their opinions to make it worthwhile.

There is a rugby tournament on, it's popular.
In the summer GAA will get a lot of coverage and that's understandable. I'm not interested in GAA but I completely understand when it is covered during the summer.
You on the other hand are suspicious that it's something else .
Do you think English soccer gets too much coverage? Is that down to where people went to school?

The 6 Nations is on from February to March. The key European games are in from October to December and then in April to May. World Cups in October every 4 years. The odd summer tour.

Rugby get three major slots on the show each week, regardless of the time of the year! Add to other shows that day talking about rugby

One understands the need for Monday and Thursday-Friday slot along with live games.

The quality of the coverage never seeks to be critical of the players when merited. It gets ridiculous at times with Thornely. Woods and O'Sullivan are more level headed.

Why refer to the EPL? I am Irish. Despite Newstalk had broacasting rights to the League of Ireland over RTE (whose Friday night coverage on the radio was excellent) and despite always covering Dublin teams when it was just a Dublin Station, OTB coverage has been brutal if non existent (and leaving a void in RTE Radio on Friday Night - not sure what the situation is now) .

They preferred to hold a crappy quiz instead on a Friday and repeats of the best bits of the show when there is no rugby to cover. During the season they have a token half hour to the league. Actually, where I am from, the coverage of the Irish Leagues barely exists!!! Also, if they are onto to rugby, why not cover the All Ireland league too ? (my god their prestige has gone south his the advent of full time Provincial Teams)

Where is coverage of athletics or boxing (both codes) ,? Even a longer slot for American sport is worth while. Horse racing is stuck to 25 minutes with Donn McClean and sadly it is mostly on betting - you will do well to get a few days covering Cheltenham.

As you know,OTB came to national prominence because of The Football Show ! So, inevitable that EPL would get daily coverage - in fairness , they do cover world football in that 1 hour slot

I was thinking about this recently. He must be putting in some hours between all the travel back and forth and double duty on certain days.

Probably a smart move for someone who presumably lived a fairly regimented life for so long. I was reading recently about some of the better known players who went off the deep end after retiring and lost everything.

Some find him a bit vanilla in terms of his analysis but you can't doubt his enthusiasm. He's also very likeable which I'd imagine goes a long way in terms of getting work.
As long as he is informed, which he is,I don't care. Why try to look for some thing contraversial to say if it ain't there. I like him and Pat Nevin. Not too much time for the other football contributors

Fair play to him with the gigs

Here I am talking up Joe again. :p

Don't know if anyone else listened to the show last night (Tuesday night) but there were back to back interviews from Joe with Lee Chin and Sarah Keane. Between about half seven and half eight.
Both of them were very good and in my view worth a listen on the playback for anyone who missed them.

I thought Joe played a big part in them being so good. Particularly with Sarah Keane who is a solicitor, he was well able to present arguments and stick to them. I was thinking of those that have said they don't rate him and I was again wondering why that is the case. IIRC, there was only one ad break which was between the 2 pieces and this added to the sense of them being long conversations rather than short snippets.

Yeah. I'd agree. He was very good in the Keane interview. I was thinking during the interview that Joe is ultimately going to end up working for RTE and not necessarily in the sports department.

I think Joe is a large part of the reason they held the show together after the exodus. I wonder how an interview with Lance Armstrong would have gone had Joe been on the other end? I suspect it would have been a lot more interesting.

(Wouldn't trade it for Lance calling Ger Gilroy a rookie though).

Joe is well prepared and allows the guest to answer the question. Doesn't interrupt unless it's necessary and isn't afraid to force a point. He could teach his drivetime colleagues a thing or two!

Ger Gilroy is basically the opposite. Dil levels of unlistenable and not suited to sport at all. Ruins the show imo.

Joe is very superficial Ger is not. Ger is actually interested in sport. He started Off the Ball deserves a lot of credit for driving it.
Joe is a media graduate who likes golf. That's about it.

Wasn't aware Ger Gilroy started OTB. I thought he was just sports editor when the others left.

    Learn something new..

Joe is a media graduate who likes golf. That's about it.

Joe was saying on Sunday he spent from half eleven Saturday morning until after Match of the Day that night watching sport. Soccer, rugby and GAA.

Fair dedication for someone who only likes Golf.

    Well it's his job.

Not sure how you could present a daily sports radio show and not watch as much sport as humanly possible. Kinda goes with the territory.

The oci interview was really good, he didn't make it easy but I was getting frustrated listening to it. She had an answer and a way round for every question, she'd make a great politician.

I thought it was quite funny, the two of them sitting there trying to work out if the OCI actually served any useful purpose.

Maybe I underestimate these media types but spending an entire day watching multiple sports you have no interest in sounds like hell!! Not to mention repeating same for years on end.

Golf may be his preference but I never got that impression from Joe Molloy tbh. For example he seems fairly comfortable talking 90s Premier League if it comes up.

Reckon they will podcast newspaper review, said this morning will have more news in coming weeks about what will happen. It's my favourite part of the week so hope it's kept.

What was the main topic of it this week?

They talked a bit about the Ireland-England game in Croker (it was 10 years ago), now they're discussing Kimmage's article with Harrington & Lowry.

It's not exceptional today, but I totally agree it's the best slot of the week.

The Saturday panel, sometimes it's on Sunday, can also be pretty good.

The golf talk that wasn't about golf was pretty good I thought.
They discussed how Kimmage talked with Lowry and Harrington about issues like celebrities soapboxing about politics etc.

Great interview with Mark Kennedy. Not sure why they are splitting it up and only feeding us scraps every couple of days.

    Thanks

70 mins long according to Kilbane.
