So all console owners are classed as 'poor' or 'poorer' - you're really going there? (That's a rhetorical question to be clear.)

It's already been said by the mod of this forum that the positive & negative sides to the Switch are welcome here, but a lot of the time it doesn't feel that way at all. Nothing wrong with wanting Nintendo to learn from their mistakes and do better - benefits all of us in the end.

No it was a bad choice of word. Not wrong, but I like novelty, when done well. Although novelty for novelty's sake is never a good idea.

I honestly think you're taking criticism of the console far too personally.

I respect your view but I do disagree.
We have had plenty of questions about the machine here, puzzled people looking for information and finding Nintendo very reluctant it seems to share.
And I'd include myself in some regards.
All points of view are welcome, once everyone engages in a respectful debate, and that's been absent from some discourse.
I say something, you take issue with the points, make counter arguments and the debate continues. That's what's supposed to happen.
You don't launch into referring to those who disagree with personal disparagement, and they are the only people who have gotten a robust reply, even then it's kept within the rules but the personal comments keep coming, again and again.

    But, fair enough.
It's just a games machine at the end of the day.
Believe me, the stuff that keeps me up at night doesn't come with a Sony/MS or Nintendo brand, it comes with loved ones or my staff who are in crisis.
    Perspective.

A Metroid Prime announcement for the Switch is needed now... Right now... I'm waiting Nintendo...

I've never played a Metroid game

    Should probably get on that

I'd say start with Super Metroid, it's still one of my favourite games of all time. Excellent game.
The GBA games are great too, bringing in some new/different mechanics, while not being quite as good.
The Metroid Prime games are an excellent transition to 3D of the general workings of the 2D games.
Metroid: Other M on the Wii was a good game, with an atrocious story line, that tried to tread the line between a 2D and 3D game.

Interesting looking back at the early replies on this thread from the first page.

This is probably going to be my first Nintendo machine that gets more than 3 or 4 games, Wii was almost exclusively Wii Party, Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart, and 95% of my DS/3DS playtime is Pokémon :D

But the Switch is getting Arms, it's getting Zelda, it's getting Mario Kart 8! Thats already three

Consoles and indeed PCs are inherently boring IMO, even the ones with a novel idea or two (which Nintendo tend to offer). They're electronic boxes from major corporations that are designed to play games - they live or die based on the games. I will never understand the hyperbolic forum wars that wage over said consumer hardware, regardless of the side - seems like such a pointless thing to get wrapped up in.

And I say this as someone who'll happily be picking up a Switch next Friday :) As I've said before, my 3DS is in need of an upgrade above all else: looking forward to being able to sneak an hour of Zelda in on the bus to/from town. While I appreciate its hybrid nature, it's still just the latest in a long line of boxes to deliver that sweet Nintendo software.

    Couldn't agree more.

Arguing about the capabilities of the hardware here is especially pointless as the Switch is offering something that the other mainstream consoles do not (and those consoles are equally offering something that Nintendo does not).

    It's an endless argument.

Can you take your PS4 on the go? No but I have no interest in playing on the bus anyway!

Can your Switch play 4K games at 60fps? No but I am interested in Nintendo games like Zelda and Mario and want to play them on the bus or on the toilet.

I think that the quality of recent and upcoming PS4 exclusives puts them way above anyone else in terms of offering the best games. That's my opinion anyway.

However, Nintendo is offering a viable alternative here. I don't understand the negativity honestly. Do people just see a bunch of Nintendo fanboys and think "I'm going to piss on their parade"?

I'd like to see an Assassin's Creed game on the switch. Is that asking too much? :pac:

Shouldn't it not be trying to avoid doing the same thing as the WiiU?

Avoiding being associated with the Wii brand now is important, regardless of the objective quality of WiiU games the subjective view of the public with a casual acquaintance with videogames is that the Wii is for kids and the WiiU just a new Wii, like an Innotab Vs Innotab version 2.0, the Switch needs a bit of distance to establish it's own identity.
The same kinda thing happened with the DS after the Gameboy, to put some space between the two.

I'm sorry guys but that's nonsense about not being able to see the difference with 720p to 1080p and 4K etc, I would suggest a trip to specsavers if you can not distinguish it on the TV in front of you...

OK. So, let's think about that for a minute.

    I own a regular PS4 and a regular TV.
I'd say Bloodborne is the best game I own but I enjoy DOOM and Uncharted 4 too.

For me, an upgrade to PS4 Pro is 400 Euro from Smyths and a decent 4K Tv looks like it would set me back 500 Euro.

So the question is am I getting 900 Euros worth of value from playing a game in 720p or 1080p vs playing the same game at 4K?

For that same 900 Euro investment I could buy a Switch and an SD card and the BOTW limited edition and a spare controller and I could go NUTS in the Virtual Console... AND I can play the damn thing on the bus? SOLD!

Yeah I think Super Metroid is the best place to start. Great game and really helps for Metroid Prime since you'll be familiar with a lot of the weapons and functionality.

As for saying it's doing a Wii U, I don't mean trying to copy it. I just remember when it launched, there were plans for more functionality to come later in the year which unlocked more of what it was supposed to do.

I'm in the middle of Switch related matters right now!
I'm trying to finish a painting of a local landmark, the buyer will be funding the remainder of my Switch costs...

    Highly subjective question.

I only very recently made the jump from CRT to a giant 1080p screen. And by christ I can see the difference. But if I get REEEEEALLLY close to the screen, just before my retinas start to smoke I can see the pixels and part of me feels let down.

That part of me might be sated by 4K gaming, but I seem to recall that part of me had very little to say during the airport fight in Civil War, 1080p seemed perfectly fine for the miserable bastard then.

On the other hand, I anticipate that €400 euro (Console + Zelda, natch) is going to turn this :
"It's 10:30... I know you just turned your console on but I have arbitrarily decided that *we* are having an early night tonight"

(PreSwitch Banjo) <dials 99 on phone> "...If you can make it to the keypad and dial the last 9 you can have your early night in A&E. Put up your dukes!"

    into this :
(PostSwitch Banjo) "No problem baby! We can even spoon in a comforting and only vaguely sexual manner if you don't mind the feel of joycons resting on the back of your head. Marriage saved!"

    It's all subjective.

    edit :

Still waiting for that dual-gamepad mode - fingers crossed!

I think that's exactly what they are thinking.
The funny thing is most of the posters here have multiple consoles but just play Nintendo as well, like myself.
But, apparently, enjoying Nintendo software appears to make your opinion on everything else in gaming worthless, in some minds, and acts as a trigger for deliberate attempts to generate aggro

    :D

I agree that it's a subjective question but it's worth considering.

Currently, PS4 and XBOX have been around for 3 years and they are both in the process of offering an upgrade that costs around 800 euros (new console + new 4K TV) at the low end.

Nintendo is offering a new console with a unique feature and the promise of some good exclusive content. This is gonna be around 500 if you factor in controllers, accessories etc.

Or folks can stick with their existing console and can invest their money in all the awesome new games that come out.

So the question is am I getting nearly 600 Euros worth of value from playing Zelda in 720p vs playing the same game at 900p?

For that same 600 Euro investment I could have a holiday abroad and buy a guitar... AND I can play the damn thing on the bus? SOLD! ;)

    A Switch costs €330
    Zelda costs €65
    Total outlay €395

That's how much it costs to play, as you suggest, Zelda BotW on a Switch.

I don't know what point there is in inflating the price of the package, except to undermine the value of the Switch as a prospective purchase.

Surely if someone wants to play Zelda without buying the Switch, they just buy it on the Wii U?

For you, now, it doesn't seem to justify the cost, so no you're not getting the value of it. For me, I know I will get the value of it over it's lifespan, so it'll be money well spent for me.

Similarly, the PS4 wouldn't be a good investment for me, because outside of Bloodbourne, I don't see anything there that I'd want to play, that I can't play on my PC.

I'm thinking that it could be a year(perhaps longer) maybe before I'll buy a Switch now. In that time I'd want a Pro controller, €80, charging grip, €30, 128GB Micro SD card, could be any price but let's say €70(though it's likely more), a second set of Joy-cons, €90. I haven't mentioned any extra games.

E3, this year will be important in determining how much longer I wait. A killer Metroid game could be enough to twist my arm, and I don't mean Metroid Prime 4. And getting a clearer picture of third party support and how Nintendo will operate everything.
